Elon's Vidisdottir shares medalist honors at HPU Classic, team second

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Elon freshman Sunna Vidisdottir fired a 75 during Monday’s first round of the High Point University Classic being contested at the Willow Creek Country Club to share the individual title as Tuesday’s second round of play was rained out.  Her play helped the Phoenix to a second-place team standing with a 311.

Vidisdottir had two birdies and 11 pars over her first 18 holes and shared the individual lead with Morehead State's Anna Appert Lund.  The pair edged out both Winthrop's Jennifer Dilger and High Point's Casey Ward by one stroke.

Also in the top five was Kathryn Buckingham.  Buckingham tied for fifth after posting a first-round mark of 77.  She also had two birdies and 11 pars.

In a tie for 10th was Emily Brooks with a 78.  Brooks posted 11 pars and one birdie during her round.  She was followed by Martyna Mierzwa and Katie Partridge, who tied for 20th in the field of 45 golfers with a score of 81.  Mierzwa had one birdie and nine pars, while Partridge had 11 pars.

Playing as an individual, Elon's Diana Davis shot an 86 to tie for 35th.

Rounding out the field were Gardner-Webb (319), Appalachian State (322), Winthrop (326) and Western Carolina (333).

Elon's next tournament will be the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic in Kiawah Island, S.C.  That event begins on March 3 and runs through March 5.

Appalachian State finishes fifth at HPU Classic

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Due to the heavy rains in the High Point area, the second day of the High Point University Classic has been canceled and the first round scores will serve as final results.

Appalachian State will finish in fifth place with a 322, as seniors Lauren Smith and Mimi Burke paced the Mountaineers with matching 78s.

The Mountaineers will return to the links in a week, heading to the Hilton Head Invitational, hosted by the University of Dayton. Last season, Appalachian took the top spot in the tournament in its first of two team championships.

Western Carolina finishes seventh at High Point University Classic

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Rain on an already wet course with showers and colder temperatures forecasted throughout the day on Tuesday have prompted tournament officials to cancel the second and final round of the HPU Classic that was scheduled for today at the High Point Country Club Willow Creek Golf Course.

The tournament has concluded after one round of play with the Catamounts in seventh out of the seven teams. Sophomore Maria Kjelldorff led WCU with an 18th-place finish after carding 80 on Monday with freshman Mariah Hopkins a stroke in arrears in a tie for 20th.

Morehead State was declared the rain-shortened tournament team champion in the first-ever event hosted by High Point. MSU carded a team 308 to edge second-place Elon (311) by three strokes. The host Panthers were third with a round of 315, followed by Gardner-Webb (319) and Appalachian State (322) rounding out the top five. Winthrop finished sixth at 326, seven strokes ahead of WCU in seventh at 333.

Western Carolina returns to action March 8-10 at the Eagle Landing Invitational, hosted by James Madison University at the Eagle Landing Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla. It is the first of back-to-back events in the Sunshine State for the Catamounts. WCU finished 13th as a team in last year’s event.
