SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elon’s Tomeka Watson and College of Charleston’s Hope Klicker have been named the Southern Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the week, respectively, the league announced Monday. The selections are made by the Southern Conference office.

Watson became Elon’s all-time leader in home runs on Sunday, Feb. 24, against Hampton in the Phoenix’s 8-2 victory over the Lady Pirates. Watson hit her 27th career home run to break a tie with Brandi Jones (2006-09) for the most all-time in Elon softball history. Watson has hit seven home runs this season, tying her total for all of last year. The senior from Jackson, Ga., as hit a home run in seven out of nine games played this season, including a current streak in six straight.

Sophomore Hope Klicker went 2-0 in the circle in two appearances last week, throwing complete games in both outings. The Walla Walla, Washington, native recorded a 0.50 ERA after allowing just one run in 14 innings. Klicker allowed only seven hits and did not walk a single batter, while striking out 22. She did not allow an extra-base hit and held her opponents to a .143 batting average.

­Also receiving nominations for player of the week were College of Charleston’s Chandler Frisbie, Georgia Southern’s Shelby Morrill, UNCG’s Katelyn Bedwell, Samford’s Alex Adams, and Chattanooga’s Sara Poteat.

Also nominated for pitcher of the week were Elon’s Kayla Caruso, Georgia Southern’s Brooke Red, Samford’s Mollie Hanson and Chattanooga’s Taylor Deason.
