Winston-Salem, N.C. – The Appalachian State men and Western Carolina women won the 2013 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships at the JDL Fast Track during events held over two days in Winston-Salem.

On the men’s side, the Mountaineers scored 183.50 points followed by Samford with 179 points and Western Carolina with 161.50 points in the final standings. The Western Carolina women tallied 149 points with Appalachian State coming in second place with 143.50 points and Samford in third with 139 points.

Sunday began with the conclusion of the men’s heptathlon, where Samford made a clean sweep of the top six spots. Freshman Steven Bastien finished first (4916) for his second individual title of the championships. Fellow Bulldogs Brandon Basset and Cody Russell finished second (4658) and third (4558), respectively.

In the women’s 60m hurdles, Elon freshman Sydney Griffin won the event with a time of 8.65. Georgia Southern’s Jasmine Billings, last year’s 60m hurdle champion, finished second with a time of 8.69. On the men’s side, Appalachian State’s Stanley Broaden tied his SoCon record (set in yesterday’s prelims) with a time of 7.90, followed by Samford’s Bo Ackerson-Gilroy (8.22).

Samford’s Lauren D’Alessio captured her second individual title of the weekend, this time in the women’s mile, with a time of 4:57.60. This is the second mile title for D’Alessio in her career. On the men’s side, Appalachian State’s Alex Taylor won the title with a time of 4:12.29.

Western Carolina freshman Tayla Carter took home the women’s 60m dash title with a time of 7.45, while last year’s champion Ebony Carter finished second (7.59). On the men’s side, Samford’s Justin Emerson took home the title for a second consecutive year (6.85).

Appalachian State’s Breanna Alston won her third-consecutive title in the women’s 200m dash with a time of 24.38. Western Carolina senior Brandon Hairston took home the men’s 200m dash title with a time of 22.12.

In the women’s 400m, Alston took home another crown with a time of 56.70, followed by Elon junior Bria Bell (57.25). On the men’s side, Western Carolina made a clean sweep of the top three spots, with junior Aaron Harris taking the top time (49.15).

Davidson sophomore Marie Demedicis won her second-straight SoCon championship in the women’s 800m with a new facility record time of 2:11.20, followed by Western Carolina junior Jocelyn Keen (2:12.91). Samford’s Nathan Hendershot captured the men’s 800m title with a time of 1:53.68, followed by Chattanooga freshman Marquis Carter (1:54.21).

The women’s 5000m came down to a sprint finish, where D’Alessio won her third individual championship of the weekend, defeating UNCG’s Chelsea Sumney by three-hundredths of a second, 17:05.48 to 17:05.51, both facility records. In the men’s 5000m, UNCG’s Paul Katam took home the crown with a facility record 14:13.77.

Appalachian State junior Jamal Tiller took home the men’s triple jump title with a facility record 15.41m jump, while last year’s champion Bob McNeil from Western Carolina, took second (14.76m). In the women’s triple jump, Samford’s Emily Allen won her second-consecutive title with a mark of 11.95m (39’2.5”).

Appalachian State senior Jared Stalling took home his second individual title of this year’s championships, this time in the men’s weight throw, with a mark of 18.83m (61’9.5”). Western Carolina senior Jamie Van Pelt finished second with a throw of 18.26m (59’11”), while The Citadel sophomore Geno Porter finished third (17.24m – 56’6.75”).

Western Carolina’s Alisha Bradshaw took home her second individual title of the weekend after winning the women’s weight throw with a mark of 17.56m (57’7.5”), followed by Appalachian State junior Ana DeLeon (17.34m – 56’10.75”).

In the women’s pole vault, Western Carolina freshman Devyn Ressler took home the individual title with a mark of 3.75m (12’3.50”).

The championship concluded with the women’s and men’s 4x400m relays. Western Carolina took first place in both. The women’s team, consisting of Genevieve Emrick, Corina Archie-McMillan, Jocelyn Keen and Tayla Carter, finished with a time of 3:47.95 for the Catamounts’ seventh-straight 4x4 crown. The men’s team, consisting of Aaron Tribble, Aaron Harris, Earl Rahming, and Brandon Hairston, set a new facility record with a time of 3:17.95
