Saturday's Baseball Roundup

UNCG 8, Dayton 2

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG baseball team hit three home runs Saturday and junior left-handed pitcher Dylan Hathcock improved to 2-0 with a solid performance on the mound as the Spartans picked up an 8-2 victory over Dayton at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. With the victory, the Spartans move to 4-0 for the second straight year while the Flyers remain winless at 0-3-1.

Hathcock entered in the top of the fifth with two outs as he threw 4 1/3 innings, scattering four hits and striking out seven. His only blemish occurred in the top of the ninth as Mel Skochdopole led the frame off with a home run to left. Hathcock now sports a miniscule 1.04 ERA with 12 strikeouts. Sophomore right-hander Max Povse started his second game of the season, falling just a third of an inning short of qualifying for his first win of 2013. He pitched 4 2/3 frames, scattered four hits and struck out three while allowing one unearned run.

Junior catcher Cambric Moye had a career day at the dish, going 4-for-4 and smacking his fourth career home run. The Blue and Gold also received a pair of base knocks from senior outfielder Christian Wolfe, senior infielder TJ Spina and redshirt freshman infielder Nin Marrero. Wolfe clubbed his second career home run, while Marrero recorded his first-ever round-tripper.

UNCG pounded out 12 hits in the contest, marking the third time in four games the Spartans have recorded double-digit base knocks. Additionally, UNCG posted eight hits that went for extra bases.

After Dayton went quietly in the top of the first, Wolfe cranked a pitch over the left field fence to put the Spartans ahead 1-0. The score remained that way until the bottom of the third, when, with two outs, Spina doubled down the left-field line. That brought up senior infielder Trevor Edwards, and he ripped a single to left to score Spina and increase UNCG’s advantage to 2-0. It was the sixth RBI for Edwards in the last two games.

The Flyers pulled a run back in the fourth when Spencer Rohr poked an RBI single through the left side, plating Mark Podlas. Dayton loaded the bases with two outs in the inning, but Povse fanned Austin Hall looking to terminate the threat and limit further damage.

The Spartans capitalized on a Moye single to open the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore outfielder Zac MacAneney reached on a fielder’s choice and replaced Moye on the base paths before stealing second base. Marrero then hit a ball to left that bounced on top of the wall and fell behind the fence, pushing UNCG’s lead to 4-1.

Following a scoreless fifth inning, the Blue and Gold broke the game open in the sixth, scoring three runs to put it out of the Flyers’ reach. Moye led off the frame with a home run to left before MacAneney and Marrero walked back-to-back. Freshman outfielder Julian Abreu moved the runners over with a sac bunt, which led to a RBI groundout by Wolfe that made the score 6-1. Marrero then crossed home plate thanks to a passed ball as the Spartans moved in front by six runs. Spina tripled to center field in his at-bat before Edwards grounded out to second to end the inning.

Marrero led off the bottom of the eighth with a double before he was plated by junior infielder Shawn Hendon, who was pinch-hitting for Abreu. Hendon’s first career RBI in a UNCG uniform increased the Spartans’ cushion to 8-1 heading into the top of the ninth.

After Skochdopole’s leadoff home run, Hathcock settled in and retired three of the last four Dayton batters to seal the win. His seventh strikeout of the day ended the contest as he fanned pinch-hitter Ralph Alloco swinging.

The teams will close the series Sunday with a doubleheader. The opening game will begin at noon while the second contest is slated to start approximately 30 minutes after the first.

Appalachian State 6, Butler 2
Butler 12, Appalachian State 7

BOONE, N.C. – Strong performances from sophomores Jamie Nunn and Alex Leach led Appalachian State to a 6-2 victory over visiting Butler in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader but the Mountaineers committed five errors in a 12-7 loss to the Bulldogs in the nightcap at Beaver Field at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium.

With the doubleheader split, Appalachian State went to 3-1 on the season and Butler moved to 2-3. The clubs play the rubber match of their three-game weekend series on Sunday at Smith Stadium. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.

The story of the series opener was Nunn, who tossed seven solid innings, and Leach, whose three-run home run in the sixth broke a 2-2 tie and lifted the Mountaineers to the 6-2 triumph.

Nunn (2-0) picked up right where he left off when he beat No. 8 NC State in last Friday’s season opener, allowing just two runs on five hits over seven innings of work against a Butler lineup that was averaging nearly nine runs a game coming into the series. The right-hander and reigning Southern Conference Pitcher and Student-Athlete of the Week struck out six, did not issue a walk and needed just 87 pitches to cruise to his second win of the season.

Offensively, Appalachian State was kept off-balance by Butler starter Eric Stout for much of the game, and, despite Nunn’s effort on the mound, trailed 2-1 after five innings. However, the Mountaineers finally broke through against Stout (0-2) in the bottom of the sixth, plating four runs to turn the one-run deficit into a 5-2 lead.

Pinch-hitter William Head got the rally started in the sixth when he drew a leadoff walk, stole second and moved to third on Hector Crespo’s infield single. After Dillon Dobson walked on four pitches, Will Callaway lined a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Head to come home from third and knot the score at 2-2.

The score remained tied for only two pitches, as Leach followed Callaway’s sacrifice by launching his first home run of the season into the Butler bullpen in right field, giving the Mountaineers their first lead of the afternoon at 5-2.

Appalachian tacked on an insurance run on Crespo’s two-out RBI single in the seventh and Taylor Thurber nailed down the victory with two innings of scoreless relief.

Jaylin Davis also homered for the Mountaineers in their third straight victory to begin the season.

The season-opening winning streak came to an abrupt halt in the nightcap, however, as Appalachian State’s five errors led to five unearned runs that proved to be the difference in the 12-7 setback.

In addition to committing five errors, Appalachian also surrendered 17 hits in the loss, including four by Butler third baseman Mike Kseniak (4-for-6, 2B, two RBI, two runs).

Crespo went 3-for-5 in Game 2 to cap a 5-for-9 day at the plate. Dobson and Leach chipped in with two hits apiece in the nightcap to help pace the Mountaineers’ 12-hit output.

Davidson 13, Lafayette 6

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Chris Dyer drove in four runs and Andrew Barna went 4-for-5 to lead Davidson in a 13-6 victory over Lafayette on Saturday night at Wilson Field. Rain early in the day forced cancelation of Davidson's game against Georgetown.

Dyer finished the day going 3-for-5 for Davidson (3-1). Centerfielder Forrest Brandt and shortstop Michael Zeblo both went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Sophomore RHP Ryan Lowe (2-0) and the Wildcats' bullpen held Lafayette (0-2) to six hits, while the 'Cats posted 16.

An RBI double by left fielder Andrew Ruck (2-for-4) in the first inning gave the Leopards a short-lived lead. In the bottom half, with two runners on, Brandt hit a triple down the right field line that rolled to the fence, and a throw in the dirt by the cutoff man bounced away from the third baseman, allowing Brandt to score on the play for a 3-1 Davidson lead.

The Wildcats used infield hits to pad their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. A leadoff double by Zeblo, a walk by left fielder Ty Middlebrooks and a bunt by right fielder Nathan Becker (2-for-4, 3 runs) loaded the bases for Dyer, who drove in a run on a bouncer that went off the pitcher and did not reach the shortstop in time to get any outs. After Middlebrooks scored on a double play, freshman Sam Foy (2-for-5) drove in another run with an infield hit.

The Leopards got one run back in the top of the fifth inning, but after Middlebrooks escaped a potential rundown following a Becker double and scored on a missed cut-off throw, Dyer singled to left to drive in Becker for an 8-2 lead.

Lafayette cut the lead to four in the top of the sixth on a two-RBI double by catcher Parker Hills (2-for-4), but Zeblo answered in the bottom half for Davidson, driving in two on a single up the middle. Ruck and second baseman Kevin Casey (1-for-3) hit back-to-back home runs for the Leopards in the seventh to pull within four again, but RHP Matt Saeta held them scoreless over the final two innings, and the 'Cats added three more runs in the eighth for the final margin.

Lowe allowed two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out six in five innings. RHP Alex Farina (0-1) took the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out two.

Davidson and Lafayette will face each other again at Wilson Field at 12 p.m. Sunday, and then Davidson and Georgetown will play approximately 30 minutes after that game concludes.

Furman 8, Michigan 5
Furman 5, Cincinnati 1

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman swept a baseball doubleheader on Saturday, downing Michigan State, 8-5, and taking down Cincinnati, 5-1, in the First Pitch Invitational at Fluor Field.

The victories improved Furman to 5-1 on the season.  The Paladins play at South Carolina on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

In Saturday’s first game, the Paladins fell behind 5-0 before rallying for eight runs to notch their second victory over Michigan State this season.  Will Muzika’s two-out, two-run triple down the right-field line in the sixth inning gave the Paladins a 6-5 lead, and Hunter Burton followed with double into the left-field corner to score Muzika and complete the five-run frame.

Furman added an unearned run in the seventh to stretch its advantage to 8-5.

The Paladin bullpen, which worked five innings of one-hit, shutout ball against the Spartans, preserved the lead and capped the comeback with a perfect ninth from Matt Solter, who struck out two in notching his second save of the campaign.

Michigan State grabbed a 5-0 lead in the fourth, combining five hits with two Paladin errors and a wild pitch against starting pitcher Elliott Warford.

The Paladins began their comeback in the fourth with an RBI grounder by Alex Abrams that scored Burton.

Furman made it 5-2 an inning later on a Muzika sacrifice fly.

Paul Nitto led off the decisive sixth with a double to left field off Spartan starter David Garner and later scored on a Jake Jones single.  Michigan State’s Mike Mestdagh relieved Garner and retired the first two batters he faced, but not before Chris Ohmstede cut the lead to 5-4 with an RBI groundout.  Mestdagh then walked Simpson before Muzika stepped up and cracked a fly ball into the right-field corner that plated Jones and Simpson to give Furman its first lead of the game.

Nitto, Burton and Ohmstede had two hits apiece for Furman, which racked up 11 hits in the contest.

Michigan State had seven hits, including two each by Blaise Salter and Joel Fisher.

The win went to Ryan Morse (1-0), who worked two scoreless innings while walking two and striking out one.

Mestdagh (0-1) was charged with the loss after surrendering three runs, two of which were earned, on three hits and a walk.

In game two against Cincinnati, Jarrod Rickman and Alex Abrams both cracked two-run home runs to lead Furman to the 5-1 victory.

Rickman spotted the Paladins a 2-0 lead in the second when he launched an offering by starting pitcher Andrew Strenge over the green monster in left field.

In the Cincinnati fourth, Devin Wenzel knocked Furman starting pitcher Jake Wolff out of the game with a line shot off the Paladin hurler’s pitching shoulder.  Wolff’s replacement, Emil Brignola, got Furman out of the inning when he got Ian Happ on a sharply hit fielder’s choice groundout to second base.

Abrams made it 4-0 in the Furman fourth with a two-run shot that cleared the wall in right-center field, scoring Nitto, who had reached on a one-out single.

Cincinnati threatened in the sixth, opening the frame with a double and single off Furman reliever Ryan Griffith to put runners at first and third, but the Bearcats saw their chance for a big inning cut short when Paladin shortstop Burton dove to his left to snag a hard-hit ball and start a double play.

Taylor Johnson gave the Paladins a 5-1 lead with an RBI single in the seventh.

Rickman went 2-for-3 with the two-run home run to pace Furman’s nine-hit attack.  Abrams, in addition to his two-run round-tripper, scored a pair of runs and also pitched 1 2/3 innings of no-hit scoreless relief with two strikeouts.

Brignola (1-0) was credited with the victory while Strenge (0-2) took the loss for Cincinnati, surrendering four runs, though only two were earned, on six hits over 3 1/3 innings.  He fanned six for the Bearcats, whose pitchers notched 12 strikeouts in the contest.

North Florida 9, The Citadel 8

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Tyler Griffin's third home run of the game staked The Citadel to an 8-4 lead in the top of the seventh before North Florida rallied for four runs in its half of the inning and another in the eighth to pull out a 9-8 victory Saturday afternoon.

Both teams are 4-2 on the season and will play the rubber game of a three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.

Griffin became the first Bulldog to hit three homers in a game since Richard Jones against Davidson on April 12, 2009, and the first with a multi-homer performance since Justin Mackert had two against Furman on April 7, 2011.

Griffin had a career-high five RBI and has seven hits in the first two games against the Ospreys. He had a final chance for a school-record fourth home run following a Bo Thompson double with two outs in the eighth and The Citadel down by a run but struck out against winning pitcher Spencer Hermann.

Griffin increased his home run total on the season to four while Thompson slammed his second of the year. Thompson and Griffin went back-to-back as part of a three-run fifth that gave the Bulldogs a 5-4 lead, and Joe Jackson added an RBI ground out in the inning to give him a team-leading 11 on the season.

Down by four runs heading into the bottom of the seventh, North Florida erupted for four runs against relief pitcher Austin Livingston, capped by a two-run homer by Paul Karmeris. With Ross White (0-1) on the mound in the eighth, Hughston Armstrong dove for a line drive to left by Hermann and the ball scooted past him for a triple.

Zach Sherrill relieved White and just missed getting his glove on a hard grounder up the middle by Corbin Olmstead that drove in Hermann with the winning run.

The offensive slugfest saw the Ospreys pound out 17 hits, one more than the Bulldogs, and the teams combine for seven home runs. Thompson, Griffin and Drew DeKerlegand each had three hits for The Citadel.

James Reeves struggled through the first five innings on the mound, allowing nine hits and four runs. He walked one and struck out five and left with a 5-4 lead. Hermann worked the final three innings in relief of starter Kyle Westwood and allowed four hits and one run while striking out three to raise his record to 2-0.

Ryan Roberson hit a two-run homer off Reeves in the first, the first round-tripper allowed by The Citadel pitching staff this season. A fielder's choice grounder by Brett Bullard in the third and a solo homer by Griffin in the third tied the game at 2 before Kyle Brooks drove a two-run shot over the fence in left in the fourth to give the Ospreys the lead back at 4-2.

Miami (Ohio) 3, Western Carolina 2 (10 inn.)

GREENVILLE, S.C. – A two-base error in the outfield on a single in the top of the 10th inning ultimately resulted in the game-winning run as Miami (Ohio) upended Western Carolina, 3-2, in 10 innings Saturday afternoon at Fluor Field.

Western Carolina capitalized on an error in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game at 2 as pinch-runner J.D. Long scored from third as the Redhawks fumbled one along the infield off the bat of Danny Bermudez. However, in the top of the 10th inning, MU’s Matt Packer singled to center field but ended the play on to third base as the ball rolled past WCU centerfielder Cody Jones. The next batter, catcher Max Andersen, then sharply singled through the right side to push home the eventual game-winning run.

Andersen finished 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and drove in all three Redhawks runs.

For a second straight day, Western Carolina (3-3) lit the scoreboard in the first inning but was unable to add to the advantage. Senior Tyler White blasted a two-out home run over the fence in left center to hand the Catamounts a 1-0 lead after one. The round-tripper was the third of the season for White, who also leads WCU with nine RBI.

WCU’s lead stood until the top half of the seventh inning, when Andersen struck first, driving in two runs on a single to right field. With runners at the corners and two outs, Miami attempted a double-steal, moving Packer off of first but not drawing a throw from the Catamounts to keep the tying run at third. On the sixth pitch of his at bat, Andersen hit one to right that allowed both runners to come to the plate, chasing WCU starter Jordan Smith.

Adam Martin lifted a one-out double down the right-field line to open the home half of the ninth with the Catamounts trailing by a run. Long came on to pinch run for Martin, who played left field on Saturday, and was moved to third on a groundout by Bradley Strong. Down to their final out, the Catamounts took advantage of a fielding error off the bat of Bermudez to allow Long to scamper home, knotting the game at 2 and setting up the finish.

The Catamounts missed a golden opportunity to seize control of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. Dykota Spiess singled to open the frame and was sacrificed over by Luke Gragg. Aaron Attaway then laced a one-out single to left center and took second on the  throw to third base to put runners at second and third. White was intentionally walked to load the bases ahead of Jacob Hoyle, who lifted the first pitch of his at bat to left field. Spiess tagged from third and scored, but a throw behind the play ruled that he had left the bag early, resulting in the third out of the frame and stranding two runners.

WCU also had a good scoring chance in the fourth, putting runners at second and third with two outs, but could not find the timely hit that would allow the club to stretch the advantage.

Martin was one of three Catamounts to post a multiple-hit game, going 2-for-4 with the double. Attaway led the team with a 3-for-5 showing, while Spiess was 2-for-4. White finished 1-for-4 on the day with the homer and the free pass.

Neither starter factored in the decision as Smith worked 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts against a pair of walks. Miami (Ohio) starter Mac Thoreson tossed seven frames, scattering six hits with three strikeouts and limiting WCU to the one run on the homer by White.

Redhawk reliever Ryan Powers (1-0) scored the victory, pitching 2 1/3 in relief with a pair of Ks, while Brandon Adkins earned the save, retiring the final two Catamounts in the home half of the 10th inning.

WCU’s Preston Hatcher was saddled with the loss, surrendering the unearned game-winning run off two hits, pitching one inning of relief. Hunter Brister tossed a third of an inning, striking out the one batter he faced, while Tyler Powell fanned three in two innings of hitless, scoreless relief.

Western Carolina concludes play in the First Pitch Invitational at Fluor Field on Sunday afternoon by facing Cincinnati. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Auburn 5, College of Charleston 1

AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn scored three runs in the third inning and limited the Cougars to just four hits on the way to a 5-1 win in the second day of the Auburn Tournament.

College of Charleston (3-3) struggled offensively with just four hits and the team’s only run coming in the ninth inning after Bradley Goodson was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a passed ball and wild pitch and then came home on a groundout.

Auburn (5-1) bounced back after losing to Middle Tennessee State in the morning game with a strong offensive output and a quality start from lefty Michael O’Neal. The Tigers scored five runs on 11 hits, including a two-run, inside-the-park homer from Ryan Tella in the third inning.

O’Neal (2-0) pitched six innings, allowing just four hits and no runs, while striking out five. CofC starter Jake Zokan (0-1) suffered the loss after giving up four runs, two earned, on seven hits through 4 2/3 innings.

The Tigers got on the scoreboard in the third inning after a two-out single from Dan Glevenyak and then a hard-hit ball from Tella down the left-field line. The ball went behind a bench down in left field, but was ruled live when left-fielder Brandon Murray tried to retrieve the ball to make a play. Tella and Glevenyak came around to score and give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

A throwing error from Goodson allowed the inning to continue and a single from Garrett Cooper tacked on another run for the Tigers.

Auburn picked up another unearned run in the fifth inning after a fielding error from Gunnar Heidt with two outs extended the inning and Cullen Wacker hit an RBI single to right field.

The Tigers’ final run came in the seventh inning off of CofC reliever Ryan West, who gave up two singles to start the inning. Tella advanced to third on the second hit and came home after Cooper grounded into a double play.

After the fourth inning, the Cougars did not manage a base-runner until the ninth, when Goodson was hit by a pitch and eventually came around to score on an RBI groundout from Brandon Glazer.

The Cougars will look to end the two-game skid on Sunday with an 11 a.m. start against Middle Tennessee State. Cougar freshman RHP Nathan Helvey will take the mound for the Cougars, while the Blue Raiders will throw LHP Zac Curtis.

Pittsburgh 4, Wofford 3

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Saturday afternoon, the Wofford baseball team was defeated 4-3 by Pittsburgh. Wofford is now 3-2, while Pittsburgh is 4-0. For the Terriers, Josh Hyman had two doubles and two RBIs. The Panthers were led by Elvin Soto with two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs.

The Panthers loaded the bases in the top of the first, but all three runners were stranded. Pittsburgh got on the board in the top of the second inning when Eric Hess doubled and scored on a groundout by Evan Oswald for a 1-0 advantage. In the top of the third inning, Soto hit a two-run homer to give Pittsburgh a 3-0 lead.

Wofford had runners at second and third after a hit by pitch to Clark Wise and a single by Alec Paradowski. A double down the right field line by Hyman scored both runners to make it a 3-2 game. After a scoreless fourth inning, the Panthers added a run in the top of fifth on an RBI double by Soto to take a 4-2 lead.

Neither team scored in the sixth, seventh, or eighth innings. In the top of the ninth, the Panthers were retired in order. Wofford led off the bottom of the ninth with a double by Hyman, followed by a single by Seth Neely. Hyman and Neely both stole bases on a strikeout, cutting the lead to 4-3. A final strikeout ended the contest.

Wofford starter Brandon Yarusi (0-1) went five innings and allowed four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts. J.D. Osborne threw three innings and gave up one hit with one strikeout. Matthew Milburn went an inning and did not allow a base runner.

Pittsburgh starter Ethan Mildren (1-0) threw eight innings and gave up two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts. Tanner Wilt picked up his second save of the season by pitching the ninth. He gave up one run on two hits with three strikeouts.

The Terriers and Pittsburgh will play a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon. The first game will be seven innings, followed by a nine inning contest. On Wednesday night, Wofford will face Presbyterian College in Forest City, N.C.

Samford put its first run on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning. Frankie Navarrete reached base on a fielder’s choice and later scored from third base when Stone grounded out to second base to cut the MSU lead to 6-1.

Mississippi State added a run in the fourth inning to make the score 7-1. With one out in the inning, Renfroe hit a solo home run for MSU’s seventh run of the contest.

The home Bulldogs plated one more run in the seventh inning to push their lead to 8-1. Flair singled through the left side of the infield, driving in Detz for a seven-run Mississippi State lead.

Samford plated one final run in the top of the ninth inning to make the final score 8-2. Allison singled to right-center field and later scored on a single by Few. The hit and RBI for Few were the first of his college career.
