CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.-The Chattanooga Lady Mocs softball team (6-5) kicked off the 2013 Frost Classic with back-to-back wins over Eastern Kentucky (3-2) and Lipscomb (4-6) Friday evening at Frost Stadium.

The 4-3 win over the EKU Colonels came on seven Chattanooga hits while the Lady Mocs 1-0 win over Lipscomb came in the late innings of a seven-inning nail-biter.

Chattanooga 4 - Eastern Kentucky 3

Taylor Deason (Clarksville, Tenn) tossed a seven-inning, three-run gem over Eastern Kentucky to improve her record to 4-3 on the season. The sophomore allowed just six hits and fanned six batters while walking one to lead UTC to a one-run victory.

Deason found run support from the Lady Mocs in the fourth inning after falling behind 1-0 in the third. A solo home run from EKU's Raquel Howes put the Colonels on top first but a three-run fourth gave UTC its first lead of the day. A walk issued to Sara Poteat (Thomaston, Ga.) and back-to-back singles from freshmen Sam Taylor (Chickamauga, Ga.) and Anyssa Robles (Hoschton, Ga.) loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Sarah Beth Roberts (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) brought Poteat home before a double from Kasey Tydingco (Fairfield, Calif.) cleared the bases to drive in two more runs.

Despite the two-run lead, a two-run sixth inning from Eastern Kentucky knotted the game up 3-3. Four hits allowed by Deason resulted in two runs scored before the Lady Mocs were able stop the bleeding, but a single from freshman Alyssa Taylor (Orange, Calif.) that drove in junior Stephanie Rieck (Chandler, Ariz.), who got the inning started with a single to right, proved to be the winning run.

Tydingco was 1-for-3 with 2 RBI while seven more Lady Mocs recorded hits.

Chattanooga 1 - Lipscomb 0

Chattanooga's second win is credited to the combined four-hit pitching performance from Deason and freshman Kaisey Carson (Indianapolis, Ind.). The tandem allowed just four hits while walking just one batter. Carson dealt the first four innings, giving up three hits and a walk, before Deason came on in relief to hold the Bison scoreless through three innings.

A scoreless game until the sixth inning, Lipscomb was only able to board five base runners- all of which were stranded by the Chattanooga defense. The Bison's strongest threats came in the first and seventh when they were able to put two runners on.

The Lady Mocs took their 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning after Robles reached first base on an error. Junior Hannah Thurley (Nashville, Tenn.) was brought on to pinch run for the freshman catcher, and an error by the pitcher on a Roberts' batted ball put runners on two bags. In an odd sequence of events, Tydingco reached on a catcher's interference call, her second interference call of the season, to load the bases. In the following at-bat, Rieck was hit by a pitch to drive in the eventual game-winning run.

Deason was credited with the win, her fifth of the season, while Carson came away with no decision. Three Chattanooga batters- Poteat, Roberts and Rieck- came away with hits against Lipscomb.

Chattanooga goes back to action Saturday at 1:15 p.m. as the Lady Mocs take on Miami-Ohio before closing out the evening at 3:30 p.m. against Boston College. Both games will be played at Frost Stadium.

College of Charleston 4, Wagner 1

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston softball team downed Wagner, 4-1, in the opening game of the Cougar Classic at Patriots Point on Friday evening. The Cougars won their fifth straight behind another dominant performance from sophomore pitcher Hope Klicker (Walla Walla, Wash.) as well as a season-high 13-hit offensive outburst.

CofC (5-3) was once again able to produce some early run support for Klicker who picked up her third complete-game victory in as many outings. She fanned 11 for the second straight game and limited the Seahawks to just five hits, three seeing-eye singles and two which didn’t leave the infield.

Of the 13 Cougar hits, eight were driven back into the middle third of the field.

Carly Corthell (Reno, Nev.) and Valerie Cassell (Edison, N.J.) were both good for three hits on the day. Cassell was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Kristy Giragosian (Charlotte, N.C.) added two RBIs as well.

Chandler Frisbie (Lawrenceville, Ga.) was 2-for-3 and scored twice.

After Klicker put down the first six Seahawks in order, the Cougar bats went to work in the bottom of the second inning. Frisbie singled back up the middle and Cassell singled down the first-base line to put two on with one out. The pair would move up to second and third on a groundout, where they’d both score on a hard-hit two-out Giragosian single.

The Seahawks wouldn’t reach a baserunner until the third when they’d load the bases on three singles, two of which didn’t leave the infield. Klicker worked out of the jam, however, with a pair of strikeouts and the help of a lead-saving over-the-shoulder catch by Frisbie at first base.

In the bottom of the third, the Cougars padded their lead on a two-out rally sparked by back-to-back singles to center from Kelsey Hodgson (Woodstock, Ga.) and Frisbie. After Rebecca Mueller (Fair Oaks, Calif.) drew a walk to load the bases, Cassell hammered a pitch back up the middle to bring two runners around to score.

Wagner put itself on the board in the fifth when Carley Nicoletti singled up the middle and took second on a wild pitch before scoring on Kristen Matteoni’s RBI single.

Klicker wouldn’t allow another baserunner the rest of the way and the Cougars would coast to their fifth straight victory.

CofC resumes action in the Classic with a pair of games on Saturday. CofC is slated to see Radford at 12 p.m. followed by Wagner again at 2:30 p.m.

Boston 2, Georgia Southern 1

Wisconsin 3, Georgia Southern 0

KISSIMMEE, FLA. – Georgia Southern Softball opened the 2013 Citrus Classic from the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex with a pair of losses to Boston University (2-1 in 8 innings) and Wisconsin (3-0). The Eagles are back in action on Saturday with games against the Terriers and Badgers starting at 2:30 p.m.

Georgia Southern’s opening game of the 2013 Citrus Classic turned into a pitcher’s duel with both teams going scoreless for the first six innings. Senior Tabby Douberley broke the scoreless deadlock with her first home run of the season which gave the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.

Boston University, however, roared back in the bottom of the seventh by producing a late rally. The Terriers were reduced to their final out with runners on second and third when a single up the middle plated the tying run, sending the game to extra innings.

The Eagles went scoreless in their fourth trip to extra innings this season. Boston University used a sacrifice bunt to move the tiebreaker runner to third. The next batter hit a sacrifice fly to left which was mis-played for an error, allowing the winning run to score from third base.

Junior Allie Miles had a solid outing in the circle, keeping the defending America East Conference Champions scoreless for the first six and two-thirds. She scattered seven Terrier hits while striking out eight batters.

Georgia Southern and Wisconsin went scoreless for the first four innings before the Badgers manufactured a single run by playing small ball. A home run in the sixth followed by a double spelled an end to Sarah Purvis’ outing in the pitching circle. Another run scored in the inning after the junior’s departure to give the Badgers a 3-0 lead.

The Eagle bats were quieted by Wisconsin’s Cassandra Darrah who tossed the Badgers’ first no-hitter since 2001. GSU earned three walks in the game and Alexa Lewis reached base on a throwing error by the Wisconsin shortstop in the sixth inning, but not hits.

Purvis worked five plus innings with four strikeouts while allowing five Wisconsin hits. She was handed her second loss of the season and falls to 5-2 on the season. Brooke Red pitched the final two innings allowing three hits, but no runs on her account.

Georgia Southern is back in action on Saturday afternoon against the same two opponents. The Eagles face BU at 2:30 p.m. before facing the Badgers again at 5:30 p.m. The weekend concludes on Sunday afternoon with a third game against Wisconsin starting from 9 a.m.
