SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The 2013 Southern Conference
Indoor Track and Field Championship is set for Saturday and Sunday (February
23-24) at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C. This will be the 78th
annual Indoor Track & Field Championship for the men and the 26th for the
women.
The championships will begin Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with the
women’s pentathlon events, followed by the men’s heptathlon events at 10:15
a.m. The awards ceremony is scheduled for Sunday at 4:40 p.m.
The event is free to the public.

The 2012 Southern Conference men's champions were the Western
Carolina Catamounts who scored 155 points. The Appalachian State Mountaineers
finished in second with 154.5 points. Samford came in third with 147.5 points.
On the women's side, Appalachian State scored 157.16 points
followed by Western Carolina with 113 points in the final standings. Georgia
Southern finished in third with 92 points. The first-place finish was the
Mounaineer’s tenth since 2000.
Fifteen student-athletes return to this year’s championships to
defend their 2012 individual titles including seven on the men’s side and eight
on the women’s side.
On the men’s side, Samford’s Bo Ackerson-Gilroy looks to improve
on his 5127-point performance in the heptathlon, a championship-record. In the
women’s competition, Samford’s Clair Goodson returns to better her
championship-record pole vault of 4.05m.
In the most recent power rankings, which include meets through
Feb. 21, Appalachian State leads the men’s side with a four-point advantage
over Samford, followed closely by Western Carolina. On the women’s side,
Samford holds the edge over Appalachian State, followed by Western Carolina.
The rankings are determined by the top eight times or scores that
are reported by the schools for each event that will be conducted at this
weekend’s championships.
