Furman finishes fifth
at Florida State Match-Up
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
Junior Aubrie Street (+2) fired a final-round 73 to help the Furman women’s
golf team capture a fifth-place finish on Sunday in the Florida State Match-Up
Tournament at the par-72 Southwood Golf Course.
Street, a native of Medford, Ore., birdied three of her
final four holes to shoot 1-over for the round and finish at 2-over par for the
54-hole tournament. She claimed a share
of eighth place in a field that included 12 of the top 70 ranked players in the
nation.
Senior Laura Wearn (E), who was tied for the lead entering
final round play, carded a 4-over 76 on Sunday to finish with a share of third
place at even-par. After a bogey-free
round on Saturday, Wearn totaled five bogeys, including four on the back nine,
on Sunday.
Junior Inga Gunnersdottir notched three final-round birdies
to shoot 74 as Furman carded a 12-over 300 to claim fifth place. The University of Georgia (+13) shot a 1-under
287 on Sunday to claim the tournament title with Oklahoma (+17), Tennessee
(+18), Florida State (+29) and Furman (+33) rounding out the top five. Furman finished ahead of three top-41 teams
in a field that included six of the top 50 teams in the nation.
Rocio Sanchez Lobato of Georgia and Erica Popson of
Tennessee tied for individual medalist honors at 2-under.
The Paladins return to action March 8-10, at the Darius
Rucker Intercollegiate in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
UNCG finishes 11th
at Florida State Match-Up
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – UNCG
sophomore women’s golfer Fanny Cnops placed 12th overall at the inaugural
Florida State Match-Up event this weekend to lead the Spartans to an 11th-place
finish at the Southwood Golf Course.
Cnops, the reigning Southern Conference Golfer of the Year,
posted a three-day, 54-hole score of 6-over par 222 (77-72-73) to finish eight
shots off the lead. Cnops’ final two-round score of 145 was tied for
fifth-lowest over the last two days. She finished eight shots behind tournament
co-champions Erica Popson of Tennessee and Rocio Sanchez Lobato of Georgia at
2-under par 214.
The 16th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs won the event
with a score of 877 to finish four shots in front of No. 6 Oklahoma and five
shots ahead of No. 33 Tennessee. The Spartans finished with a three-round team
score of 932 (314-310-308).
Freshman Sammie Buchanan tied for 36th overall with a score
of 231 (78-74-79) while senior Courtney Taylor turned in a 53rd-place
finish with a score of 237 (80-80-77). Sophomore Berglind Bjornsdottir carded a
246 (83-84-79), while Andrea Rangel came in with a 252 (79-90-83).
The Spartans return to action March 3-5 when they take part
in the Kiawah Invitational, hosted by the College of Charleston at the Cougar
Point Golf Club.
