DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson men's tennis team pushed its winning streak to five in a row by sweeping its matches against visiting Richmond (4-1) and Brevard College (6-0) Saturday afternoon at the Knobloch Tennis Center in non-conference men's tennis action.
Davidson ran its record to 5-1, the best start since 2003 when the Wildcats also won five of their first six matches to open the year.
The 'Cats started the day vs. Richmond (3-5) and captured three of the four singles matches that were completed as well as taking the doubles point.
Nicky Kunz defeated the Spiders' Ethan Dunbar 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 1 singles spot, while teammate Joe Schafer matched his feat with his fourth win in a row, defeating Jesse Feder at No. 2 singles with a 6-3, 6-4 win.
Chris Mark fell to Paul Nahon III by scores of 6-3, 6-2 but the Wildcats bounced back with a 6-7, 6-2, 6-0 win by Robert Lightbourn at No. 4 singles.
Wins at No. 1 and No 2 doubles gave the Wildcats the doubles point. Mark teamed with Kevin Moore to win 8-7. Schafer and Ethan Kallick also picked up the victory defeating Aaron Wicker and Dylan Trent 8-4 in the No. 2 slot.
Davidson then swept through the Tornadoes (0-3) by taking all five singles match and both doubles positions.
Kunz picked up his third singles win of the season with a 6-2, 6-4 decision at No. 1, followed by Connor Evins taking home a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 2.
First-year player Alex Howard won his second collegiate match with a strong 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3 over Stefano Giovanolli, while Roger Irigoyen Berlanga cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 triumph at No. 4 singles for his second collegiate singles win as well.
Ethan Kallick rounded out the singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 5 for his first win of the year.
Robert Lightbourn and Kunz moved to 3-1 on the season with an 8-5 doubles win together, while Howard and Evins earned their first win as a doubles pair this season on the strength of an 8-2 win at No. 2.
Davidson has a mid-week match against Belmont Abbey this coming Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 5 p.m.
Elon 7, Washington & Lee 0
DURHAM, N.C. - The Elon University men's tennis team defeated the Washington & Lee Generals, 7-0, on Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Sheffield Tennis Center on the campus of Duke University.
Elon won the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead in the match. Cameron Silverman and Robert Lindgren won 8-4 versus Hayden White and Christopher Hu, while Juan Madrid and Dan Sablik came away victorious, 8-2, over Brian Krouskos and Thomas Johnson at No. 3.
Silverman, ranked No. 21 in the nation, claimed 6-1, 6-1, win over White at No. 1 singles, while Lindgren defeated Taylor Shamshiri at No. 2, 6-1, 6-2.
Jordan Kaufman was a winner at No. 3 singles after topping Michael Holt in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5, while Brian Kowalski won, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 4 spot.
Carlos Arboleda and Brian Krouskos went three sets, as Arboleda bounced back from a 6-2 setback in the first set to claim the next to sets, 6-4, 13-11, for the victory.
Rookie Ismael Sanchez Delfin was victorious at No. 6 singles, topping John Kirby in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
Elon's next match is slated for Feb. 22 at home versus Radford.
East Carolina 5, Appalachian State 2
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Appalachian State men's tennis fell short in a 5-2 loss to East Carolina University on Saturday afternoon.
The Mountaineers (1-6) fought their way through singles action as the Pirates (7-1) managed to take three in singles, and swept doubles play. The Pirates won the first four matches, while the Mountaineers tallied their fifth loss of the season.
Sebastien King and Jen-Willem Kleynhans were edge-and-edge with ECU duo Joran Vliegen and Ross Nigro (5-5), but that is as close as the Mountaineers would come to victory in doubles action on Saturday. Steve Karendal and Andrew McKinnon were defeated by Damien Brenard and John Schmith in the No. 2 flight (8-2), while Steve Lake and Zach Bost fell to Pirate pair Patriek Wolterbeek and Nicolas Soriano in No. 3 doubles (8-3) giving ECU the 1-0 lead heading into singles action.
The Pirates continued full charge ahead, clenching the first four singles matches beginning with Joran Vliegen's defeat of King in No. 1 flight (6-1, 6-2). Nicolas Soriano carried the Pirate momentum with a victory over Karendal in the No. 2 spot (6-3, 2-6, 6-4), while ECU's John Schmitt defeated Zach Bost at No. 3 flight (6-0, 6-3) to grow the Pirate lead to 5-0.
App State continued the fight, earning its first point courtesy of McKinnon's victory over Patriek Wolterbeek in No. 5 flight (6-3, 6-3). Matt Saltsgaver earned Appalachian's second point with his No. 6 win against Blake Gregory (7-5, 6-3).
The Mountaineers will have time to recollect before returning to action against Army on March 10 in Orlando, Fla.
