CREEK, N.C. – Campbell dropped its first meet since Jan. 15 as it
fell to No. 7 Virginia Tech Saturday 42-4 in Gore Arena in its final home meet
of the season. The Camels moved to 5-7
overall, while the Hokies improved to 14-2.
Virginia Tech used four pins, three major decisions and two decisions in
the victory.
CU freshman Michael Dahlstrom earned the only Camels win of the day at
141 pounds. He posted an 8-0 major decision over VT’s Michael Gowan. The
victory evened Dahlstrom’s overall and dual meet records to 3-3.
At 125 pounds, freshman No. 28 Eric Montoya suffered his first dual meet
loss since the Camel Duals on Nov. 10. VT’s Jarrod Garnett, the third-ranked
wrestler in the nation in the weight class, pinned Montoya in 2:26. Montoya
moves to 28-11 on the year with a 7-4 dual-meet record.
The Camels take the road for the remainder of the season. Their final two
Southern Conference matches will be on Feb. 14 and Feb. 25, as they take on
Davidson and Chattanooga, respectively. CU will face two more Atlantic Coast
Conference teams in North Carolina and Duke on Feb. 17 in Chapel Hill, N.C.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Appalachian
State’s wrestling team came close in a few bouts but was unable to keep up with
No. 11 Virginia, falling to the Cavaliers, 42-0, Saturday afternoon at Memorial
Gymnasium.
The Mountaineers dropped their third straight
dual and moved to 6-6 on the season. The 42 points scored by the Cavaliers were
the most an Appalachian State team has given up since the 2009 Lone Star Duals,
when the Mountaineers fell to Oklahoma, 43-3.
The shutout marked just the second time in
the JohnMark Bentley era that the Mountaineers were unable to find the
scoreboard. The last time Appalachian State was shut out was in last season's
Lone Star Duals when it dropped to then-No. 12 Oklahoma, 41-0.
With the dual beginning at 149 pounds,
freshman Zach Kechter posted one of his better performances of the season,
allowing No. 20 Derek Valenti just one point in the opening bout. Kechter
failed to tally a point but held Valenti to the 1-0 decision.
At 197 pounds, redshirt sophomore Paul Weiss
held his opponent to just two points but failed to score a point in his second straight
bout. For Weiss, it was his fourth loss in a dual this year.
No. 11 Virginia (14-3) exhibited its
dominance throughout the dual, claiming two pins, one technical fall, and four
major decisions. Junior Chris Johnson forced the final decision, falling to
UVa's Joseph Spisak, 9-3, at 141 pounds and the final bout of the afternoon.
Appalachian State returns to its SoCon slate,
traveling to the site of this season's conference championships, Lexington, Va.,
for a key dual with VMI on Wednesday, Feb. 20. Action against the Keydets is
set for 7:30 p.m.
