SIUE splits on final day of Hoosier Duals
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – SIUE’s wrestling team won three of its five dual matches for the weekend after a split of Sunday's action at the Hoosier Duals. The Cougars, 3-6, defeated Drexel 26-12 and fell to Indiana 28-9.
Patrick Myers and Jake Residori were double winners for the Cougars on Sunday.
Myers, wrestling at 133 pounds, topped Drexel's Kevin Devoy 2-1 and Indiana's Chris Caton 3-2. Residori earned a major decision at 174 pounds against Drexel's Kevin Maytas 16-5 and then downed Indiana's Nate Jackson 10-8.
The Cougars fell behind 12-6 in the Drexel match after winning just two of the first five matches. Drew Vrebenec joined Myers as a winner with a 6-3 victory over David Pearce.
SIUE steamrolled Drexel in the final five matches with back-to-back major decisions by Connor McMahon and Residori as well as decisions by Deshoun White and Chris Johnson. Heavyweight David Devine capped off the dual with a 2 minute, 41 second, pin over Joe Girgio.
Indiana closed out its own round-robin tournament with a victory over the Cougars. Karsten Van Velsor was SIUE's only other winner aside from Myers, as he edged Joe Randazzo 2-0 at 149 pounds.
SIUE continues action next Sunday with a dual match at Northwestern. The first match is set for 2 p.m. CST in Evanston, Ill.

VMI swept on final day of Hoosier Duals
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Virginia Military Institute wrestling team concluded the 2013 Hoosier Duals Sunday afternoon, squaring off against University of Northern Colorado and Drexel University at University Hall on the campus of Indiana University.
The Keydets fell in both matches on the final day, dropping a 40-3 decision against the Bears of North Colorado and suffering a 29-12 setback against Drexel.
In the first match of the day, 133-pounder Mike Flora was the lone winner for the Keydets (1-9) against Northern Colorado. The rookie scored double-digit points in a bout for the first time in his career, besting Sonny Espinoza 11-6.
The Flora victory tied the match after two bouts, but the Bears ran off eight straight victories to secure the win in the first-ever meeting between the programs.
Sunday’s final match was much closer for the Keydets. After falling behind 13-0 through the first three matches, Shabaka Johns picked up his first win of the day, topping Nick Maccini 4-0. Two matches later, VMI’s Mark Darr collected another win for the Keydets with a four-point victory over Jason Fugiel. The final VMI win of the day came in the heavyweight division, as Juan Adams collected a forfeit.
The Keydets are idle for nearly a month as their next competition will be on Jan. 5 at Sacred Heart University. Match time is set for 5 p.m. at the William H. Pitt Center in Fairfield, Conn.
