SIUE tops VMI in SoCon action at Hoosier Duals
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – SIUE won successive NCAA Division I wrestling matches for the first time since the 1991-92 season Saturday with victories over VMI and Northern Colorado.
Wrestling at Indiana's University Gym, the Cougars were victorious in two of three dual matches to start the two-day Hoosier Duals.
SIUE opened the Southern Conference season with a 23-14 win over VMI. The Cougars followed with a 25-17 triumph over Northern Colorado. West Virginia broke SIUE's string with a 27-3 victory over the Cougars.
It was the first time SIUE has won back-to-back matches against Division I programs since defeating San Diego State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State) under Hall of Fame head coach Larry Kristoff.
Dakota Leach got the Cougars started in the day's opening match against VMI. His 9-2 win over Dalton Henderson at 125 pounds was the first of three straight wins for the Cougars. Patrick Myers defeated Mike Flora 13-1 and Drew Vrbenec downed Joe Jarrells 10-0.
VMI matched the Cougars with three straight wins to tie the match 11-11.
Jake Residori put SIUE back into control at 174 pounds with a technical fall over Timmy Davidson, 15-0. Deshoun White and Chris Johnson added wins for the Cougars as SIUE went to 1-0 to start the SoCon season.
Myers and Johnson both provided falls in SIUE's win over Northern Colorado. Myers pinned Sonny Espinoza in 1 minute, 29 seconds at 133 pounds. Johnson dismissed Cole Briegle in 5:23 at 197 pounds.
SIUE also earned victories with decisions from Vrbenec, McMahon and White as well as a major decision by Residori.
Heavyweight David Devine's lost his first two matches by a combined five points but was SIUE's lone winner against West Virginia with a 6-4 decision over A.J. Vizcarrondo.
SIUE, 2-5, has two more matches at the Hoosier Duals. The Cougars wrestle Drexel at 10 a.m. Sunday and take on host Indiana at noon.

VMI drops three at Hoosier Duals
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Squaring off with some of the top competition in the country, the Virginia Military Institute wrestling squad dropped three dual matches on the first day of the Hoosier Duals, hosted by Indiana University, falling to SIUE, West Virginia and the host Hoosiers.
VMI fell in its three matches during the event at University Gym, dropping a 23-14 decision against SIUE in a Southern Conference clash, 38-3 against West Virginia and 46-0 versus the Hoosiers.
Over the course of the day, VMI (1-7, 0-2 SoCon) wrestled against eight wrestlers ranked in various polls in the country, including four from West Virginia and four from Indiana.
The Keydets got off to a slow start against SIUE, falling behind 11-0 through the first three matches. But in VMI fashion, the squad rallied to tie the score 11-11 with wins at 149, 157 and 165 pounds. Shabaka Johns got things going with a 6-3 decision over Karsten Van Velsor, followed by a narrow 4-3 win by Ted Gottwald over Logun Taylor, cutting SIUE’s lead in half.
After dropping his match Wednesday night by a technical fall, sophomore Mark Darr bounced back against the Cougars, dropping Connor McMahon 17-2, picking up five team points and tying the action at 11-11.
But SIUE won the next three weights to secure the win. However, VMI got the last win of the match as Juan Adams extended his winning streak to a season-high three. With a 6-3 decision, VMI’s heavyweight pushed past SIUE’s David Devine, who finished third at last season’s Southern Conference Championships, to end the first dual of the day.
Despite the one-sided score against West Virginia, five of the matches were decisions, including a 3-2 loss by Darr at 165 pounds. Johns dropped a 5-1 decision against Mike Morales, who is ranked No. 31 nationally. At 197 pounds, Tasi Mathias was edged 5-1. The lone Keydet victory against West Virginia was from Adams, who bested Wayne Purnell 6-2, helping the VMI senior go 2-1 on the day.
VMI returns to action at the Hoosier Duals on Sunday as the Keydets square off with Northern Colorado at 11 a.m. and Drexel at 1 p.m. Both duals will take place at University Gymnasium.

The Citadel finishes 26th at Cliff Keen Invitational
LAS VEGAS – Turtogtokh Luvsandorj earned four victories to take fourth place in the 174-pound bracket on Saturday as The Citadel wrestling team completed its weekend action at the Cliff Keen Invitational.
The event, which was held inside the Las Vegas Convention Center, featured a talented field of 33 teams. The Bulldogs finished 26th with 20.5 team points, while the fourth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners took the team crown with 154.5.
Luvsandorj, who entered the match ranked 15th by InterMat Wrestling, competed against three ranked wrestlers en route to a fourth-place finish in his competitive weight bracket.
The Mongolia native opened the day with a 7-2 win over Grand Canyon's Martin Fabian followed by a 3-2 decision over NC State's Pete Renda. The two wins pitted Luvsandorj against Navy's 13th-ranked Matthew Miller. Luvsandorj made quick work of Miller and earned the dominant win by default at 4:46 to move on to the semifinals against top-ranked Andrew Howe of Oklahoma.
Howe's 16-4 win over Luvsandorj dropped the Bulldog grappler to the consolation finals, where he took down Iowa State's Lelund Weatherspoon in a 3-1 decision to advance to the third-place bout against 11th-ranked Stephen Doty (Virginia).
Doty toppled Luvsandorj and was able to get the pin in the final minute to drop the redshirt senior to fourth place.
The Citadel’s Kenneth Radford won two matches, including a pin on Brown's Giuseppi Lanzi in the consolation bracket, while Aaron Hansen and Jack Duane also earned one win each.
The Citadel will have the rest of December off before hitting the mats again on Jan. 1-2 in Chattanooga, Tenn., for the nationally recognized Southern Scuffle.
Davidson drops pair of duals
BOSTON – With both matches coming down to the wire, the Davidson wrestling team dropped a pair of close contests, falling to Sacred Heart 22-19 before taking a 24-19 loss to host Boston University on Saturday evening at Case Gym.
Seven different Davidson wrestlers earned wins, including Scott Patrick, who posted a pair of victories to improve to 10-1 on the season.
Philip Elias (125) kicked things off with a 9-3 decision over Sacred Heart’s Joe Harris, while Anthony Elias (133) followed suit with a 15-7 major decision over Theodore Fabian to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead. The Pioneers won the next five to take a 19-7 advantage.
Nathaniel Powers (174) ended the skid as Sacred Heart was forced to forfeit at 184 pounds. Scott Patrick (197) then earned his fifth pin of the season in 6:10 over Tomasz Filipkowski, but the Wildcats would take the 22-19 loss.
In the next team match, James McCord scored his first career victory at 141 pounds, winning a 6-5 decision over Boston University’s Peter Ishiguro to cut the Davidson deficit to five at 8-3. Kevin Birmingham (149) pinned Nick Tourville in 2:03, tying for the team lead with Patrick at five pins on the season and giving the ‘Cats the lead at 9-8.
Patrick, this time wrestling at 184 pounds, grabbed his second victory of the day, winning a 13-4 major decision over Colin Saunders. Michael Moore won by forfeit at 197 pounds, but it wasn’t enough to give the Wildcats the win as they fell to the Terriers 24-19.
The Wildcats are off until the New Year, when they will kick off 2014 with a trip to Ada, Ohio, to take on Ohio Northern on Jan. 8 at 7 p.m.
