App?s Dylan Cottrell Named Wrestler of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Appalachian State 149-pounder Dylan Cottrell has been named the Southern Conference wrestler of the week for all competition from Dec. 11-17. The selection is made by the league office.

Cottrell topped a ranked wrestler in his only action of the week, earning a 6-4 decision over No. 13 Tywan Claxton in the Mountaineers’ 27-12 loss to Ohio in Athens, Ohio.

The win moved Cottrell to a near-perfect 14-1 on the season, including a 5-0 mark in dual matches. The redshirt freshman from Spencer, W.Va., moved to 43-8 in his career.

Cottrell, who also earned the weekly award on Nov. 20, is nationally ranked in his weight class, checking in at No. 10 in the Amateur Wrestling News rankings, No. 11 in the WrestlingReport.com poll and No. 16 in the InterMat rankings.

Appalachian State (2-3, 0-0 SoCon) hosts Cleveland State on Thursday at 5 p.m., followed by a 7 p.m. bout against NC State.

Also nominated: Brent Jorge (Campbell) and Nick Soto (Chattanooga).
