Appalachian State’s Delbridge earns All-South Region honors
KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Appalachian State’s Harrison Delbridge was recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America by earning 2013 NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Men’s All-South Region third-team honors, announced by the NSCAA on Monday.
As a senior leader on the back line for the Mountaineers this past season, Delbridge earned Southern Conference first-team honors, living up to expectations before the season when he was named to the SoCon preseason first team. The value that Delbridge brought on defense was heightened by his offensive production in a season that saw the defender net three goals for the Apps.
The Raleigh, N.C. native scored the game-winning goal against Wofford on Oct. 15 off of a free kick that was blasted to the near post. The goal secured a win over the regular-season champion Terriers and handed Wofford its only loss during regular-season conference play.
Four Elon players earn All-South Region honors
KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The Elon University men’s soccer team had a program-high four members of its squad selected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-South Region teams as released by the association on Monday. Senior Daniel Lovitz was placed on the first team, junior Jason Waterman received second-team laurels and junior Nathan Dean and senior Matt Wescoe earned third-team honors.
Lovitz became the third member of the program to be tabbed as the Southern Conference’s Player of the Year after helping the Phoenix capture its third consecutive league tournament title in 2013. The Wyndmoor, Pa., native had 14 total points this season, with four goals and six assists, and was a clutch performer for the Phoenix as he tied the team lead in game-winners with three, including two against top-10 opponents. He scored the lone goal of the contest in the Phoenix’s 1-0 victory against No. 9 Wake Forest on Sept. 17 and converted the decisive penalty kick in Elon’s 2-1 win over No. 6 Coastal Carolina on Oct. 29. This is the second straight year that Lovitz has earned All-South Region accolades.
Waterman paced the Phoenix scoring attack with 31 points, which currently sits tied for 10th in the nation. The junior striker had a team-best 12 goals and tied the team lead with seven assists for the maroon and gold in 2013, earning first-team All-SoCon honors. The Bloomington, Ind., native scored the game-winner in the Phoenix’s 1-0, double-overtime victory over Wofford in the SoCon tournament championship match to help Elon capture its third straight NCAA tournament berth. Waterman also scored a goal and provided the game-clinching shootout penalty kick against Clemson to help the Phoenix advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history.
Dean played all but five minutes in goal this season and helped the Phoenix post seven shutouts as a unit. The Liverpool, England, native had six clean sheets on the year, including one against ninth-ranked Wake Forest in which he made six saves. A two-time SoCon Player of the Week performer, Dean had a career-high nine saves against William & Mary on Sept. 20 and moved into third place all-time on the program’s career list in shutouts with 16 in the Phoenix’s 1-0 win over Wofford in the SoCon tournament championship game. Dean also received first-team All-SoCon honors.
Wescoe earned all-region accolades for the first time in his career after tying for the team lead in assists (seven) and game-winners (three). The Willow Springs, N.C., native was third on the team in total points with 17 as he added five goals to his stat line. A second-team All-SoCon performer, Wescoe scored the game-winners and lone goals in the Phoenix’s wins at Campbell (Oct. 1) and against Georgia Southern (Oct. 15). He also provided a goal in the maroon and gold’s 5-1 victory over the Eagles in SoCon semifinals and converted the game-tying penalty kick in Elon’s 1-1 draw against Northeastern in its season-opener on Aug. 30. Wescoe concluded his career among the top 10 in assists in program history.
Elon became only the second team in SoCon history to win three straight league tournament titles and returned to the NCAA tournament for the third consecutive year. The Phoenix advanced to the second round of the national tournament for the first time in school history after tying Clemson 1-1 and winning the ensuing shootout 4-1 in the opening round.
Furman’s Lissek, Edet earn all-region honors
KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Furman goalkeeper Sven Lissek was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-South Region second team and forward Bobby Edet garnered third-team honors, it was announced on Monday by the NSCAA.
Lissek, a second-team All-Southern Conference choice, paced the league with a 0.64 goals against average and nine shutouts as a sophomore in 2013. The Sewau, Germany, native helped the Paladins to an 11-5-2 record and 10 shutouts on the season en route to earning SoCon Player of the Month honors in both September and October.
Edet, a native of Frisco, Texas, netted a team-high seven goals and added one assist in 18 matches to earn second-team all-league honors and SoCon Freshman of the Year accolades. The rookie scored four game-winning goals, including the deciding tally in the final minutes of a 1-0 victory against nationally ranked Elon.
Wofford duo earns All-South Region honors
KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Wofford College men's soccer sophomore forward Connor Davis and junior defender Forrest Lasso were named to the NSCAA All-South Region teams for their performances this season.
Davis was named to the second team and Lasso was named to the third team. For each player, this is his first career NSCAA honor.
Both players played a huge role in Wofford winning its second Southern Conference regular-season title in school history and reaching its third Southern Conference Championship title match in five seasons.
Davis has had a fantastic season for the Terriers as he earned a first-team All-Southern Conference selection. He was a huge part of the team's success this season, scoring a team-high 11 goals and notching five assists for a team-high 27 points. He finished in the top three in the Southern Conference in each category. His total goals and total points each ranked in the top 25 nationally for all NCAA Division I men's soccer entering the NCAA tournament.
A native of Roswell, Ga., Davis scored his biggest goal of the season on Nov. 15, when he scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win against Furman in the Southern Conference Championship semifinal match. He also tallied his biggest assist on Oct. 12 when he assisted the game-winning goal by Lasso in the 95th minute of a 2-1 upset of No. 16 Elon at Snyder Field. Davis was also named No. 51 in the Midseason Top 100 College Men's Soccer Players by Top Drawer Soccer.
Lasso was a force in the Wofford defense that ranked second in goals against average (0.99) and shutouts (two) in conference play. He also earned his second straight second-team all-conference selection after being named on the second team last season.
The native of Raleigh, N.C., scored seven goals this season, which was second on the team and tied for fifth in the Southern Conference. He was also virtually unstoppable in the air on set pieces, scoring three game-winning goals this season, including two in Southern Conference play.
