Appalachian State 2, Longwood 1

BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State grabbed a win on Senior Night in a nonconference match against the Longwood Lancers, 2-1. The Apps honored Harrison Delbridge and Danny Free before the game.

The Mountaineers (4-7-6) will now head into Saturday’s match on a high note. Appalachian State will travel to Elon for a Southern Conference quarterfinal game with kickoff set for 7 p.m.

The Lancers (7-7-3) got on the board early on in the match on Tuesday, scoring in the eighth minute. Off of a Lee Martin corner kick, Patrick McDaniel got a head on the ball toward the back post and put it past Free for the 1-0 advantage. Free made two saves on the night he was honored by the men’s soccer program.

Appalachian would net the equalizer in the 39th minute on a fantastic head ball from Donovan Japp for his fourth goal of the year. The header was set up by a perfect cross from Alex Herbst on the far side of the field.

The Mountaineers would get the game-winning goal from Tommy Labriola on his first of the season. Japp brought the ball down the sideline and was able to find Labriola in the middle of the box with the keeper pulled out of his net. Labriola was able to finish it off for a 2-1 Mountaineer advantage.

Carl Carpenter started in net for the Lancers and made two saves.

Appalachian State outshot Longwood 10-5, including four shots on target for the Mountaineers. Appalachian also held the advantage in corner kicks 7-5.

The Mountaineers will travel to Elon, N.C., to face the No. 2 seeded Phoenix in the first round of the SoCon tournament on Saturday. Kick off set for 7 p.m. Elon defeated Appalachian State earlier in the season in Elon, 1-0.

 

East Tennessee State 3, Wofford 2 (OT)

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men’s soccer team came back from a two-goal deficit but couldn’t hold on in overtime as it fell to East Tennessee State 3-2 on Senior Night at Snyder Field on Tuesday night.

With the loss, the Terriers fell to 10-6-1 overall, while the Buccaneers improved to 8-5-4 with the win.

In the first half, Wofford created the first chance of the match in the third minute, when sophomore midfielder Nestor Jaramillo rifled a shot outside the 18-yard box that was parried away by ETSU goalkeeper Ryan Coulter.

The Buccaneers created their first chance one minute later, when Willi Nordenstrom had his shot from inside the 18 miss wide right.

Junior defender Forrest Lasso had a great chance off of a throw-in to capitalize, but his header sailed just wide right of the goal in the 12th minute.

ESTU would begin to put on some pressure as it forced freshman goalkeeper Garrett Closs to make a couple of big saves. His biggest saves came in the 18th minute, when he had to make a double save on two shots to keep the game level at 0-0.

The Buccaneers would take a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute when Nordenstrom took a shot from 15 yards that deflected off a defender and Closs and went into the net.

Joao Ramalho would then extend the ETSU lead to 2-0 seven minutes later when he received a pass from Itode Fubara just inside the box and fire home his second goal of the season.

Undaunted, the Terriers were able to score right before the break to bring the game within one when senior defender Blair Gaines crossed a ball to senior forward Dennis Moore, who laid the ball off to Jaramillo to finish inside the box in the 43rd minute, making the score 2-1 at the half.

Closs had to make another big save starting the second half when he denied Jonny Campbell’s shot in the 49th minute. Closs then had to make another save in the 76th minute on David Geno’s shot to keep the game at 2-1.

Wofford would tie up the match 2-2 when Lasso would head in a long throw-in from senior defender Billy Padula in the 80th minute. For Lasso, it was his seventh goal of the season and the assist for Padula was his 11th.

ETSU would get the final chance in regulation to score the game-winner, but Ramalho’s shot in the 89th minute was blocked by a defender sending the match into overtime.

In the overtime period, the Terriers had a great opportunity to grab a game-winner, but freshman forward Matthew Aurednik had his shot inside the 6-yard box off a long ball denied by Coulter in the 91st minute.

The Buccaneers would find the game-winning goal in the 99th minute when Campbell’s cross into the box found Geno, who scored his third goal of the season, making the final score 3-2.

For the match, ETSU outshot the Terriers 18-14, but the teams had four corners each.

Closs fell to his sixth loss of the season, facing 18 shots, allowed three goals and made five saves. Coulter earned his eighth win of the season, facing 14 Terrier shots, allowed two goals and made four saves.

The men’s soccer team returns to the pitch on Friday, Nov. 15, when it plays in the semifinals of the Southern Conference tournament in Greenville, S.C. The opponent and time will be determined after Saturday’s quarterfinal games. The Terriers will play the winner of the match between No. 4 seed Furman University and fifth-seeded Davidson College.
