Davidson downs Belmont Abbey
BELMONT, N.C. – Anthony Elias and Scott Patrick each came away with their first pins of the season, while Nick Pappayliou earned a major decision to lead the Davidson wrestling team past Belmont Abbey College by a score of 31-6 in the season-opener at the Wheeler Center on Sunday afternoon.
The Wildcats claimed the first five bouts of the match, starting with a 5-0 victory by Philip Elias over Patrick Mestraz at 125 pounds. Anthony Elias then pinned Belmont Abbey’s Gabe Pastrick in 1:52 to earn another win for the Wildcats at 133 pounds.
At 141, Alex Palinski earned a 5-3 decision over William Scott for a successful collegiate debut. Kevin Birmingham followed that with a 6-2 decision over the Crusaders’ Tyler Harrington at 149 pounds. Also making his collegiate debut, Pappalyiou took a 14-5 major decision over BAC’s Jake Glunt at 157 pounds for his first career win.
The Crusaders took the next two bouts, but the Wildcats would close out the match with wins in the final three. Patrick pinned Marcus Dwaileebe in 2:46 to claim victory at 184 pounds, while freshman Michael Moore battled to a 5-4 win over BAC’s Kelly Baker at 197. Ed Isola then claimed a 3-1 triumph over Glenn Cothren in the heavyweight division.
Davidson will travel to Raleigh, N.C., on Sunday, Nov. 17, to compete in the Wolfpack Open, hosted by NC State.

Campbell competes at Clarion Knight Point Open
CLARION, Pa. – Eloheim Palma and Michael Dahlstrom each went 4-2 Sunday at the Clarion Open to lead the way for Campbell in its first open tournament of the season. Palma posted a pin and a major decision in the heavyweight division, while Dahlstrom’s wins included a major decision at the 141-pound spot.
Palma, a redshirt senior, fell in his first match to Pittsburgh’s P.J. Tasser but bounced back with a 3:51 pin of American International’s Iarik Loschchinin in the wrestleback bracket. He then posted a 7-2 decision over SoCon foe VMI’s Juan Adams before earning a 10-1 major decision over Ohio State’s Kosta Karageorge. Palma earned his fourth and final win with a 4-2 decision over American International’s Matthew Pringle before falling to Ohio State’s Nick Tavanello 5-2.
Dahlstrom, a sophomore, also fell in his first match 11-4 to Rutgers’ Tyson Dippery 11-4. In the wrestleback bracket, he started off with a 12-2 major decision over Pittsburgh-Johnstown’s Ben Rager and followed with a 4-3 decision over Pitt-Johnstown’s Luke Palamides. Dahlstrom moved on with a medical forfeit from Pittsburgh’s Edgar Bright before earning another 4-3 decision over Finger Lakes Wrestling’s Angelo Silvestro. His tournament ended with an 8-5 loss to Notre Dame College’s Andrew Bannister.
Junior Daniel Luty also posted a winning record, going 3-2 on the day at 157 pounds. He started with a 16-1 tech fall over U.S. Military Academy Prep’s Spencer Nick. He earned a second straight tech fall, defeating American International’s Jonathan Ortiz 15-0 before falling to Lock Haven’s Dillon Gavlock 7-3. Luty notched his final win with a 5-3 decision over Bloomsburg’s Matt Hicks and was edged out by Pitt-Johnstown’s Heath Coles 4-3 to end the day.
Campbell entered nine wrestlers into the tournament across seven weight classes. Karsten Kopp went 2-2 at 174, while Drew Walker (133), Grant Blumenthal (157), Garrison Mattews (165), Cody Ryba (165), and Ville Heino (184) all posted 1-2 records in their respective weight classes.
The Camels are back in action Saturday in East Lansing, Mich., for the Michigan State Open.
VMI competes at Clarion Knight Point Open
CLARION, Pa. – Featuring youth on the roster and the return of cadet-athletes from injury, the 2013-14 season is under way for the Virginia Military Institute wrestling team, which kicked off the year at the Clarion Open at Clarion University’s Rec Center.
The Keydets saw the return of big man Juan Adams at the heavyweight division after suffering a season-ending injury early in 2012-13. VMI, under the direction of interim head coach Chris Skretkowicz, sent eight freshmen to the tournament in Western Pennsylvania.
During the tournament, VMI picked up 10 wins from its grapplers, with multiple wins from Adams, Dalton Henderson at 125 pounds and Shabaka Johns at 149 pounds. Adams collected his first win since Dec. 29, 2012, at the Brute Invitational.
Henderson got his Keydet career under way but fell in his first match 5-3 against Sean Badua, representing the United States Military Academy Preparatory School. Henderson bounced back in the next round, pinning Jared Rice of Mercyhurst North East in the first round, stopping the match in just 1:40. Henderson connected his win with a 3-2 decision over Ohio State’s Joshua Whitt in the consolation second round. Henderson’s afternoon was cut short by Brian Houser of Notre Dame College by an 11-3 major decision.
At 149 pounds, Shabaka got his career going winning his first match as a Keydet, edging Kent State’s Luke Kern 5-3. Johns fell in the next bout by fall to Kurtis Becker, wrestling unattached from Bloomsburg University. After a bye in the first round of the consolation bracket, Johns won his second match of the day 8-4 over Jesse Holton, wrestling unattached from Maryland. The Keydet’s afternoon was ended in the next round of consolation action by a narrow 3-2 decision to Collin Harrell, unattached from Kent State.
Adams wasted no time returning to form, pinning his first opponent, Mauro Correnti, unattached from Lock Haven, in the final moments of the third period. Adams was bested by fall in the next round by Lehigh’s Max Wessel in the second round. In his next match, Adams picked up a major decision over Luke Fleck, an unattached wrestler from the University of Pittsburgh. Adams’ final win of the day was a 9-0 victory.
The Keydets are back at it for an action-packed weekend at the Salem Civic Center as VMI will participate in both the Hokie Duals and the Hokie Open. As part of the Hokie Duals, VMI squares off with in-state rival Virginia at 9 a.m., followed by Skretkowicz’s alma mater, Hofstra University, at 11 a.m. The Duals wrap up at 1 p.m. with another in-state foe, Virginia Tech. The Hokie Open portion of the event will run all day.
