No. 20 Purdue 30, SIUE 15

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE’s wrestling team collected four individual victories Sunday but lost a 30-15 decision to 20th-ranked Purdue at the Vadalabene Center.

It was the first regular-season home dual meet for first-year SIUE head coach Jeremy Spates.

SIUE freshman Dakota Leach electrified the fans in the opening match with a fall over Camden Eppert in 2 minutes, 16 seconds. Leach put six team points on the board for the Cougars with the victory over Eppert, who entered the weekend ranked 18th nationally at 125 pounds.

SIUE heavyweight David Devine closed out the match with a thrilling 2-1 victory. After giving up an escape to Purdue's Alex White in the second period, Devine chose down in the third period and gained a reversal with 30 seconds left in the match.

After winning five straight matches Saturday, Jake Residori continued his winning streak with an 8-3 decision over Andy Hoselton at 174 pounds.

Deshoun White scored an escape and a takedown in the final period at 184 pounds and collected a 3-2 win over Andrew Wiseman.

Purdue, 2-1, took advantage of a forfeit and three falls to push back the Cougars. Braden Atwood led the charge with a 21 second pin over Chris Johnson at 197 pounds.

Next up for the Cougars, 0-4, is a five-match event at Bloomington, Ind., Dec. 7-8. The Cougars open the Southern Conference season Dec. 7 against VMI and also face Northern Colorado and West Virginia. On Dec. 8, the Cougars take on Drexel and host Indiana.

Gardner-Webb goes 2-1 at Wolfpack Duals

RALEIGH, N.C. – Gardner-Webb picked up a pair of wins Sunday at the Wolfpack Duals, beating UNC Pembroke (34-14) and Lindsey Wilson (33-13) but falling to NC State (37-0).

Kyle Ash at 157 pounds and Austin Trott at 165 each picked up two pins on the day, part of a group of six wrestlers to post 2-1 records for the event.

In addition to Ash and Trott, Gardner-Webb got two wins each from Cortez Starkes (125), Robert Golde (133), Ryan Mosley (141) and Brett Stein (174).

Davidson defeats Anderson, falls to OSU & GMU

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson’s Scott Patrick pinned Ohio State’s Matthew O’Hara and added another pin and a major decision to lead the Wildcats as they went 1-2 in their home opener Sunday afternoon at Belk Arena. Davidson defeated Anderson 42-6 and fell to George Mason 28-16 and No. 9 Ohio State 42-6.

Davidson (2-2) picked up 13 individual wins, including five pins, two major decisions and a technical fall.

At 184 pounds, Patrick earned the ’Cats’ lone win vs. Ohio State, pinning O’Hara in 4:10 to pick up six points for the squad in the loss.

The Wildcats were solid from start to finish in their victory over the Trojans, posting eight total wins. Philip Elias scored a major decision at 125 pounds over Cory Monteforte by a score of 13-1, while Anthony Elias followed that up with a pin of Keenan Simmons in 3:37 at 133 pounds. Freshman Nick Pappayliou downed Zane Newton by technical fall in 6:29 with a score of 18-2 at 157 pounds, and Patrick Devlin followed suit with a win at 165 pounds with a pin of Ian Harper in 1:51.

Patrick earned his second pin of the day vs. Anderson, defeating Taylor Doresett by fall in 1:08. Michael Moore (197) and Ed Isola (285) both won by forfeit at their respective weights to hand the ’Cats the 42-6 triumph.

Davidson started off with a pair of wins vs. George Mason, as Philip Elias (125) earned an 11-5 decision over GMU’s William Prochniewski and Anthony Elias (133) claimed a 3-1 decision over Christopher Rodriguez. Kevin Birmingham pinned Luke Ludke in 4:26, helping the ’Cats to a 12-5 lead.

After dropping three in a row, Patrick won a major decision over Ryan Hembury, 14-5, to keep the ’Cats within striking distance. However, losses at both 197 and 285 pounds gave the Patriots the 28-16 win.

Next up for Davidson is a trip to Boston, Mass., for a pair of duals at Boston University. The Wildcats will take on the host Terriers as well as the Sacred Heart Pioneers on Dec. 7 at 10 a.m.

Campbell finishes 11th at Keystone Classic

PHILADELPHIA – Redshirt senior Eloheim Palma placed in his third straight open, taking fourth at 285 pounds, while classmate Brent Jorge took sixth at 149 as Campbell totaled 36.5 points to finish 11th at the Keystone Classic on Sunday.

Palma went 3-2 on the day, moving to 13-7 on the season. He recorded his team-leading fifth pin of the season to open the tournament over Penn’s Anthony DiLonardo in 1:35, tying his fastest of the year. He defeated No. 19 Justin Grant (Bloomsburg) in the quarterfinal 3-2, as Grant became the third nationally ranked wrestler he has defeated this season.

Palma fell to No. 8 Adam Chalfant (Indiana) 8-3 in the semifinal round. He bounced back with a decisive 12-6 decision over SoCon foe Denzel Dejournette of Appalachian State in the consolation bracket semifinal. Palma met Grant again in the third-place match, this time getting pinned in 1:33.

Jorge was Campbell’s other placer, finishing 5-3 at 149 pounds and improving to 9-7 overall. He notched his first pin of the season in 46 seconds over Bloomsburg’s Kurtis Becker in the opening round before Pittsburgh’s Mike Racciato won by fall over Jorge in 2:38. Jorge won four in a row to reach the consolation bracket semifinal. He posted two technical falls over Bloomsburg’s Matthew Hicks (16-0) and Penn’s Alfred Murabito (16-1). He followed with decisions over Curt Delia of Rider (4-3) and Andrew Lenzi of Penn (8-6). Jorge took on Racciato again in the consolation semifinal, falling 13-4, and took sixth place after medically forfeiting to Northwestern’s Colin Shober.

Sophomore Grant Blumenthal finished 3-2 at 157, moving to 11-7 overall. Three Camels finished the Keystone Classic at 1-2: Michael Dahlstrom (141 pounds), Cody Ryba (165), Ville Heino (184) and Taylor McGiffen (197). Collin Munson (149) and Daniel Luty (157) fell in each of their individual matches.

Campbell will have a three-week break before returning to the mats Dec. 14 at the Northern Iowa Open, its fifth tournament of the year.

 

Appalachian State finishes 12th at Keystone Classic

PHILADELPHIA – Reigning Southern Conference wrestler of the week Dylan Cottrell did not disappoint on Sunday when he finished in third place at 149 pounds in what was a tough field at the Keystone Classic.

The Mountaineers had two wrestlers place on the day, with Cottrell taking third and Denzel Dejournette finishing sixth at 285 pounds.

Cottrell started the day with a win over Nathan Hoffer (Arizona State) by a convincing 8-1 decision after receiving an opening-round bye. Cottrell then won by decision over Andrew Lenzi (Penn), 6-2. In the semifinal, Cottrell fell to No. 5 Jason Tsirtsis (Northwestern) by major decision, 16-3. After the semifinal loss, Cottrell would rattle off two wins in the consolation bracket to take third place. A pin against Colin Shober (Northwestern) would place the redshirt freshman in the third-place match, where he met Mike Racciato (Pittsburgh) and would win a 7-6 decision.

Dejournette defeated Steven Graziano (Penn) by decision 6-1 to get his day started. Kyle Colling (Arizona State) would defeat Dejournette in the quarterfinal match with a pin. Dejournette would then win matches against Anthony DiLonardo (Penn) by decision 9-3 and No. 18 Kevin Innis (Boston University) by major decision 9-1 to reach the consolation semis. In the semifinal match, Dejournette fell to Eloheim Palma (Campbell) by a decision of 12-5. In the fifth-place match, Dejournette lost to Mike Gregory (Pittsburgh) by fall to take sixth place.

At 125 pounds, Dominic Parisi and Vito Pasone both lost their first matches and faced off against each other in the second round of the consolation bracket. Parisi would defeat Pasone in the battle of Mountaineers by a decision of 8-3.

Also receiving wins on the day was Jake Smith at 141 pounds, who defeated Matt Greene (Northwestern) by fall and won by decision against Tom Page (American), 8-3. Zack Strickland earned two wins on Sunday at 165 pounds, defeating Marcos Peralta (American) by a major decision 15-3 and earning a sudden-victory decision over Geno Morelli (Pittsburgh), SV-2, 4-2. Also at 165 pounds, true freshman Adrian Soto-Perez picked up a win in the consolation bracket, winning by decision over Matthew Rubin (Boston University), 11-4. Colin Hedash picked up a victory at 174 pounds, defeating Colin Saunders (Boston University) by decision, 10-8.

Appalachian finished with 31 points on the afternoon to take 12th place. The Mountaineers will return to the mats on Dec. 15 when they travel for a dual with Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.
