The Citadel tops Anderson

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel wrestling team used six pins, two forfeits and a major decision to top Anderson 52-4 in the season-opening dual on Sunday at McAlister Field House.

The Bulldogs opened the match with a 12-0 lead after Anderson forfeited the 197- and 285-pound bouts and quickly extended their lead to 24-0 after a second-round pin by Joaquin Marquez at 125 and a first-round fall by Aaron Hansen at 133.

The Trojans got on the board in the 141-pound bout, as Zach Hale won by major decision over Nick Kiter, but the Bulldogs cruised to four more pins at 149 by Aaron Walker, 165 by Kenneth Radford, 174 by Turtogtokh Luvsandorj and 184 by Jack Duane.

Defending conference champion Matt Frisch earned the 9-1 major decision in his first match of the season and improved his career dual mark to 12-2.

The Citadel head to Annapolis, Md., to compete in the Navy Classic next weekend. The Bulldogs took third place last year at the always-competitive event.

Davidson wraps competition at Wolfpack Open

RALEIGH, N.C. – Kevin Birmingham took second place at 149 pounds and Scott Patrick placed fifth at 185 pounds to lead the Davidson wrestling team at the 2013 Wolfpack Open, hosted by NC State in Raleigh on Sunday afternoon.

Birmingham went 5-1 with three pins on his way to the runner-up finish. After beating North Carolina’s Anderson Pope by a technical fall at 16-1, Birmingham pinned Collin Munson of SoCon foe Campbell in just 50 seconds before earning an 11-7 decision over NC State’s Cohl Fulk. He moved on to defeat another member of the Wolfpack, Beau Donahue, by fall in 1:53 before pinning ODU’s 16th-ranked Alexander Richardson to earn a spot in the finals. He then fell in a 5-1 decision to UNC’s Christian Barber to end his run and take second.

Patrick also went 5-1 on the afternoon, working his way back from a quarterfinal loss to take fifth overall at 185 pounds. After earning a bye in the first round, he defeated Maryland’s Philip Robilotto by a 13-4 major decision before losing by major decision to ODU’s Jack Dechow 10-1. Patrick earned a 12-4 major decision over UNC Pembroke’s Kyle Kidd before taking down Dusty Floyd of Virginia by fall to move to the fifth-place match, where he earned a 3-1 decision over Jared Holliday of Newberry.

Ed Isola went 3-2 at 285 pounds, pinning Virginia Tech’s Dawson Peck in 3:09 and earning an 8-0 major decision over Maryland’s Sean Twigg. Anthony Elias earned a 17-2 technical fall over Coker’s Keyon Benjamin and pinned VMI’s Preston Roper on his way to a 2-2 record.

The Wildcats will host Ohio State, George Mason and Anderson in their home opener at Belk Arena next Sunday. The action is slated to start at 1 p.m.

 

Campbell competes at Wolfpack Open

RALEIGH, N.C. – Campbell placed five at the Wolfpack Open on Sunday, as Eloheim Palma finished highest for the Camels in second at 285 pounds. Paul Duggan took fifth at the 165-pound spot, while Drew Walker and Grant Blumenthal finished eighth at 133 and 157, respectively.

Palma posted a 3-1 record on the day, bringing his overall record to 10-5, the highest win total for any Camel.  The redshirt senior started the morning with pins over Coker College’s Austin Akins (2:09) and Maryland’s Luis Beteta (2:10). The two falls bring his season total to four, also leading the team. In the semifinal, Palma defeated Old Dominion’s Matt Tourdot 7-3 before falling to NC State’s Nick Gwiazdowski 13-4 in the championship.

Duggan finished the tournament 5-1, moving to 7-3 overall.  His first pin of the day was over North Carolina’s Riley Allen (1:46) before he posted a 9-4 decision over UNC Pembroke’s Faris Teia. The junior fell in the quarterfinal to NC State’s Peter Santos 7-2 but bounced back to pin Duke’s Andrew DeHart in 4:02. In the consolation bracket semifinal, Duggan earned a 16-4 major decision over George Mason’s Ryan Forrest and took fifth place in a close 2-1 match with North Carolina’s Ethan Ramos.

At 133, Walker finished 3-2, sitting at 7-6 on the season. He started the day with a 13-4 major decision over UNCP’s Asher Goodwin, followed by an 8-6 sudden victory over North Carolina’s Troy Heilmann. His first loss came in the quarterfinal to Virginia Tech’s Dennis Gustafson (14-3). In the consolation bracket, he earned a 7-4 decision over Newberry’s Virgil Toms before meeting Heilmann again, this time falling 12-6 to the Tar Heel.

Blumenthal posted a 4-2 tournament record, improving to 7-6 on the season. In his first bout, he earned a 17-1 technical fall over UNCP’s Daniel Hayes before Nick Brascetta (Virginia Tech) defeated him 22-5. He posted three straight decisions in the consolation bracket, starting with a 6-4 win over NRV Mat Club’s Mason Mele. He defeated Newberry’s Kayne Melko 5-4 before downing NC State’s Rodney Shepard 8-3. In the consolation semifinal, NC State’s Chad Pyke edged Blumenthal 7-4.

Five other Camel grapplers competed attached, including Michael Dahlstrom at 141 (4-2),  Brent Jorge at 149 (2-2), Daniel Luty at 157 (2-2), Ville Heino at 184 (2-2), and Taylor McGiffen at 197 (1-2).

Campbell is back in tournament action at the Keystone Classic in Philadelphia, Pa., at 9 a.m. next Sunday.

 

Appalachian State wrestles at Roadrunner Open

FRESNO, Calif. – Appalachian State University wrestling captured some key victories and placed five, as the Mountaineers concluded the 2013 Roadrunner Open hosted by Bakersfield on Sunday.

With five place winners, the Mountaineers took sixth with 42 points. Maryland came into the Roadrunner Open ranked 25th nationally and took first place with 81 points on the day.

Redshirt freshman Dylan Cottrell has continued his dominant streak so far this season. Cottrell won his first two matches over Alex Abono (Unattached) and Robby Workman (Embry-Riddle) by technical fall and then earned three straight decisions over Kyle Chene (Cal Poly), Frank Goodwin (Maryland) and Blake Kastl (Cal Poly) to capture first place for 149 pounds. The Spencer, W.Va., native defeated Kastle in the first-place match by a 7-0 decision and headlined the day for the Black and Gold.

At 125 pounds, redshirt junior Dominic Parisi was dominant early on for the Apps. Parisi pinned his first opponent, Kimoni Pollard, in 3:31 before winning his next two matches by major decisions over Matthew Correa (Bakersfield) and Seth Hood (Fresno City). Parisi earned a 5-0 decision in the semifinal match against Tommy Pawelski (Stanford) to earn a spot in the first-place match against Evan Silver (Stanford). Parisi fell in a close decision, 3-1.

After falling to Dominic Kastl (Cal Poly) in the first match at 174 pounds, junior Colin Hedash worked his way through the consolation bracket with six straight wins to capture third place. Hedash highlighted the run with a technical fall over Tim Hollowell (Menlo College), decision over Johnny Watson (Navy), a win in overtime over Keaton Subjeck (Stanford - unattached) and a decision over Martin Fabbian (Grand Canyon). Hedash won the consolation semifinal over Dominic Kastl and the third-place match over eighth-ranked Bryce Hammond, both by medical forfeits.

Redshirt sophomore Zack Strickland started his tournament on a high note. After receiving a bye in the first round, Strickland earned a major decision over Robin Callas (Sierra College) and pinned Juan Maynes (Grand Canyon) to reach the 165-pound quarterfinal. There, Strickland fell to Adam Fierro (Bakersfield) by decision. Once in the consolation bracket, Strickland got on a roll once again. The Muncy, Pa., native pinned Vince Aboytes (San Francisco) and won by decision over his next two opponents, Tyler Manion (Maryland) and Justin Lozano (unattached). In the third-place match, Strickland fell to Peyton Walsh (Navy) to take fourth place for the Mountaineers.

The fifth wrestler to place for the Mountaineers on the day was Denzel Dejournette at 285 pounds. Dejournette received a bye to start the day and won by decision in his next two matches against Narciso Juarez (Fresno City) and Sam Cervantes (Bakersfield) to reach the semifinals. Once there, Dejournette lost a close decision to Spencer Empey (Cal Poly). Dejournette would move to the semifinals of the consolation bracket but fell in his next two matches to Nathan Butler (Stanford - unattached) and Josh Marchok (Stanford - unattached) to take sixth place.

Jake Smith and Aaron Scott earned four victories each at 141 pounds and 157 pounds, respectively. Vito Pasone and Acton Pifer earned three wins a piece on the day at 125 and 141 pounds. Nick Vetell earned two wins at 184 pounds, while Colby Langford, Adrian Soto-Perez and PJ Shuler earned one victory each at 133, 165 and 285 pounds. Nick Hall wrestled two matches but did not record a victory at 157 pounds.

The Mountaineers will return to the mat next Sunday when they travel to Philadelphia, Pa., to compete in the 2013 Keystone Classic.
