LEXINGTON, Va. – In a match that had a little bit of everything, from pins to clock drama to back-and-forth scoring, the Virginia Military Institute protected its home venue, The Thunderdome, with a 27-11 nonconference win over visiting Franklin & Marshall College.
After the Keydets (1-3) jumped out to a 9-0 lead, the Diplomats (0-2) rallied and grabbed an 11-9 lead. But the Keydets, aided by a Corps straight from VMI basketball’s 121-80 win at home, bounced back and scored the match’s next 16 points.
One of the most exciting matches of the evening was at 184 pounds, as VMI’s Hardy Hendren collected his first win of the year in dramatic fashion. Tied 2-2 against F&M’s Paul Alessandrini, Hendren had accumulated exactly one minute of riding time as the third period ended, giving the Keydet a bonus point and the victory.
Two Keydets won their matches by fall as lightweight Dalton Henderson pinned the Diplomats’ Jason Bing in just 1:37 in the first match of the night at 125 pounds. Eight bouts later, VMI’s 197-pounder, Andrew Embree, sealed the win with a first-period pin over Isaiah Cromwell, staking the Keydets to an insurmountable 24-11 lead.
Embree has a knack for drama against Franklin & Marshall. During the 2011-12 season, the last time the Diplomats came to Lexington, Embree wrestled up a weight class at 285 pounds and bested Alex Henry 8-3, giving VMI a dramatic 18-17 win in The Thunderdome.
Henry was also part of the evening’s final bout, as Keydet heavyweight Juan Adams won his team-leading fifth match of the year with a 4-0 shutout.
Four of the bouts in VMI’s first home dual were decided by two points or fewer, with the Keydets going 3-1 in those matches. At 133 pounds, Mike Flora collected a 3-1 victory over Robert Ruiz, while Timmy Davison nabbed a 6-5 win over Gordon Bolig at 174 pounds, setting the stage for Hendren’s bout.
But climbing back into the match, Franklin & Marshall won two bouts by major decision, accounting for eight of the team’s 11 points. Rick Durso bested VMI’s Emmitt Kelly 12-3 at 141 pounds for the Dips’ first win of the night, cutting VMI’s lead in half, 9-4. Sharron Townsend won F&M’s only one-point match of the dual at 149 pounds as Sharron Townsend edged Keydet Shabaka Johns 4-3, pulling F&M within two of VMI’s nine-point advantage.
A major decision at 157 pounds gave the Diplomats their first lead of the night, as Andrew Murano beat Ted Gottwald 13-5. The match ended 12-5 but Murano had amassed more than a minute of riding time, giving him an extra point and the Dips another team point and an 11-9 lead. But VMI ran out the slate, claiming wins in the next five weight classes.
The Keydets are idle until Dec. 4, when they welcome Southern Conference foe Gardner-Webb University to town. The league match is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. at The Thunderdome.

Chattanooga downs Shorter, Life
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team posted wins over Life University and Shorter University at Maclellan Gym on Saturday. The Mocs improved to 4-3 overall with the victories.
There were only four contested matches in UTC’s 50-3 win over NAIA-member Life. Sophomore Austin Sams scored a 5-3 overtime win over Dillan Schouw at 149. Freshman Michael Hooker followed with a 17-0 technical fall against Jeffrey Drever at 157.
The Running Eagles got on the board behind Oliver Brukardt’s 11-4 decision over Kevin Cooper at 165. Chattanooga junior Trey Stavrum wrapped up the match with a pin (1:14) over Cory Hamas at 174.
UTC opened the Shorter match with three straight tech falls. Freshman Zach Bridson (125), junior Nick Soto (133) and Sams (141) all scored two bonus points in their matches.
Junior Shawn Greevy continued the run of bonus points for UTC with a 10-0 major decision over Gabriel Bird. The Hawks won two matches, Terrence Smith at 184 and Andrew Ewers at 197.
Chattanooga hits the road next weekend for the Navy Classic in Annapolis, Md. The next home match is set for Monday, Dec. 16. That is the Candlelight Dinner Match against Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m.

Gardner-Webb drops four duals Saturday
YPSILANTI, Mich. – Gardner-Webb dropped all four of its matches Saturday at the 2013 Eastern Michigan Duals, falling to Kent State (42-4), Eastern Michigan (35-3), Michigan State (26-13) and Utah Valley (29-12).
Austin Trott (165 pounds) continued his solid early season performance, posting a 4-0 record for the day. Trott took down Kent State’s Clay Wenger in a 12-0 major decision, topped Eastern Michigan’s Jacob Davis 8-3, held off Michigan State’s Bobby Nash 5-2 and blanked Utah Valley’s Curtis Abner Cook, 7-0.
Gardner-Webb got wins from Cortez Starkes (125 pounds) and Ryan Mosley (141 pounds) against Michigan State and from Brett Stein (174 pounds) in the Utah Valley match.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs will be back in action on Sunday, Nov. 24, in Raleigh, N.C., at the Wolfpack Duals.

SIUE drops three duals Saturday
CHICAGO – The SIUE wrestling team competed in its first dual meets of the 2013-14 season Saturday, as it faced Ouachita Baptist, Arizona State, and Illinois at the Chicago Quad.
The Cougars dropped all three matches, losing 26-15 to Ouachita Baptist, 29-6 to Arizona State and 38-3 to Illinois.
Next up for SIUE is the Joe Parisi Open in St. Charles, Mo., next Saturday. The tournament will be hosted by Lindenwood.
