Furman's Powell Named Volunteer COY by USA Baseball

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman University’s Landon Powell has been named the recipient of USA Baseball’s Volunteer Coach of the Year, the organization has announced.

Powell, who joined Furman in August as the Paladins’ volunteer assistant coach, was among a group of recipients of USA Baseball’s annual organizational awards recognizing the top athletes, coach, and performances from the 2013 National Teams.

Carlos Rodon received the organization’s Richard W. “Dick” Case Player of the Year Award, given annually to USA Baseball’s top player. The organization also honored the 18U National Team as its Team of the Year, its gold-medal game starter Brady Aiken with the International Performance of the Year, and manager Rob Cooper with the Rod Dedeaux USA Baseball Coach of the Year Award.

In conjunction with the United States Olympic Committee, USA Baseball also named its National, Developmental and Volunteer Coach of the Year Award recipients with Cooper (18U National Team), Dave Webb (12U National Team) and Powell (14U National Team Development Program) receiving the honors.

Powell, a two-time USA Baseball alumnus as a player (‘98 16U; ‘02 CNT), volunteered his time during the 2013 14U National Team Development Program at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. The Triangle-area native and former big leaguer worked with 40 players from all over the country in both on-field and off-field training sessions. Powell won gold with the Collegiate National Team at the Honkbal Classic in Harleem, The Netherlands, in 2002 while excelling for the University of South Carolina before embarking on a professional career that saw him spend parts of three seasons with the Oakland Athletics.

As a member of the A’s, he caught Dallas Braden’s perfect game, 4-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on May 9, 2010.
