Samford?s Malcanisha Kelley Named Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford forward Malcanisha Kelley has been named the Southern Conference women’s soccer player of the week for all competition Oct. 30. The selection is made by the league office.

Kelley had two goals and an assist in Samford’s regular-season finale Wednesday to earn the final weekly award of the season.

The freshman from Childersburg, Ala., notched her fourth game-winning goal of the season when she got on the board in the 17th minute in the 7-1 win over Chattanooga. Kelley assisted on Trine Taule’s score in the 49th minute and added her second goal of the game in the 56th minute as the Bulldogs won emphatically.

With five points in just 32 minutes of playing time on the day, Kelley assumed the team scoring lead with 19 points on the year. She finished the regular season with eight goals and three assists.

The win over Chattanooga, coupled with losses by Appalachian State and Wofford on Wednesday, vaulted the Bulldogs from sixth in the league standings to fourth, securing first-round SoCon Championship hosting duties for Samford. Since joining the league in 2008, the Bulldogs have never finished lower than fourth in the regular-season standings and have hosted a first-round match each season it was possible to do so.

No. 4 seed Samford (12-5-2, 5-3-2 SoCon) will welcome fifth-seeded Appalachian State (8-6-4, 4-2-4 SoCon) on Sunday at 4 p.m. CT. The squads will be playing for the right to advance to the SoCon Championship semifinals, which will take place at Wofford’s Snyder Field in Spartanburg, S.C., on Nov. 8. The title match will be Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. at Snyder Field.

Also nominated: Lea Raedle (The Citadel), Rachel Locks (Davidson), Bethany Haupt (Elon), Carlie Couch (Furman) and Sara Robinson (Western Carolina).
