SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elon’s Luis Vargas has been named the Southern Conference men’s cross country runner of the week for his performance during the weekend of Oct. 4-6, the league office announced Wednesday.

Vargas receives his second runner of the week award of 2013 after finishing sixth in a very competitive field of more than 250 runners at the Greater Louisville Classic. The junior from Angier, N.C., posted a time of 24:39 on the 8k course, just 20 seconds behind 2012 All-American Peter Okwera from Tennessee.

Elon will return to action during the weekend of Oct. 18-19. The Phoenix will compete at the Blue Ridge Open in Boone, N.C., on Oct. 18, while select members of team will compete at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terra Haute, Ind., on Oct. 19.
