Wofford ties for third at Wendy’s Invitational
CHARLESTON, S.C. – On another challenging day at the Charleston Southern University Wendy’s invitational, the Wofford College women’s golf team turned in the fourth-best team score of Tuesday’s final round, a 23-over-par 311, to take third place with a combined 54-hole score of 56-over-par 920.
The par-72, 6,011-yard Rivertowne Country Club allowed no individual rounds under par in Tuesday’s final round. The Terriers were led by freshman Katy Funk, who shot a 5-over-par 77 to finish the tournament tied for 15th place at 11-over-par.
Senior Anne Marie Covar matched Funk’s final-round 5-over 77 and climbed four spots from a tie for 25th to finish tied for 21st at 15-over-par. A 5-over round was also carded by sophomore Maegan Higgins, who moved up five spots on the leaderboard to earn a tie for 26th at 17-over-par. Sophomore Emiley Pagrabs shot an 8-over 80, beginning the day tied for 19th and earning a tie with Higgins for 26th. Rounding out the Terriers competing for the team score was junior Lauren Dunbar, who had a rough go of it on Tuesday and shot a 13-over 85 to tie for 44th place at 25-over-par.
Senior Shelby Winters competed for the Terriers as an individual, carding Wofford’s best round of the day and the second-best final-round score of the tournament. Winters shot a 2-over-par 74 to match three other players and was only beaten by Coastal Carolina’s Frida Castillo, who shot the best round of the day at 1-over 73.
The College of Charleston ran away with the tournament, winning by 13 strokes over Coastal Carolina with a three-day score of 13-over-par 877. Coastal took second at 26-over-par, followed by the Terriers and Charleston Southern at 56-over. CofC’s Laura Fuenfstueck won the tournament by three strokes with a 54-hole score of 1-under-par 215.
The Wofford college women’s golf team competes again next Monday-Tuesday in Jacksonville, Fla., at the Jacksonville Courtyard Classic.
The Citadel finishes 12th at Wendy’s Invitational
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Citadel sophomore Eraina Manor continued her solid play in the fall season after she carded a 232 and finished tied for 24th at the Wendy's Invitational held at the Rivertowne Country Club.
Manor (75-81-76=232), the lone Cadet to fire a round in the 70s, led a Citadel unit that finished 12th out of 13 teams with a team score of 1002 (326-338-338).
Junior Kellie Anderson (84-82-84=250) notched a +34 for the Bulldogs to tie for 58th, while Renata Sucha (81-85-93=259) capped off the two-day tournament with a +43.
The Cadets also included scorecards from McKenzie Duncan (86-90-88=264) and Hollie Salvo (91-93-90=274) who placed 68th and 71st, respectively.
College of Charleston captured first-place honors in the event, firing an 877 (290-287-300; +13), followed by Coastal Carolina (890; +26), Wofford (920; +56) and host Charleston Southern (920; +56).
The Cougars' Laura Fuenfstueck (68-71-76=215; -1) earned top individual honors, finishing three shots in front of Coastal Carolina's Lena Schaeffner (72-70-76=218; +2).
The Citadel completes its fall schedule on Oct. 21 when the Bulldogs head to Savannah, Ga., to compete at the Savannah College of Art & Design Fall Invitational.
Chattanooga finishes eighth at Lady Pirate Invitational
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Chattanooga Mocs women’s golf team finished eighth at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate on Tuesday. UTC’s final-round 308 gave it a total of 918, four strokes behind Maryland in seventh at 914.
Jordan Britt was low for the Mocs, tying for third. She carded rounds of 72, 71 and 76 for a total of 219. It’s her second top five in a row. She’s averaging 72.7 strokes per round over the last six.
Emily McLennan matched Britt for low round Tuesday at 76. She shot 232 for the event, two better than Isabella Loza at 234.
Agathe Sauzon and Porsche Campbell rounded out the team scoring. Sauzon finished at 239, while Campbell ended at 244.
East Tennessee State won by four over Middle Tennessee. The Bucs shot 897 after a final 18 of 301. The Blue Raiders tallied 901, with host East Carolina (904) in third, another three strokes back.
MTSU’s Avery George, a freshman from Cleveland, Tenn., won the event as the lone student-athlete in the field under par. George finished at 1-under (215), turning in cards of 75, 67 and 73. Longwood’s Amanda Steinhagen was second (218), one ahead of Britt and Maryland’s Juliet Vongphoumy.
UTC returns to the tee this weekend in Iowa. The Diane Thomason Invitational starts Saturday with 36 holes with a final 18 on Sunday at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City.
Elon places 10th at Lady Pirate Invitational
GREENVILLE, N.C. – A final-round 310 held the Elon women's golf team in 10th position at the conclusion of the 2013 Lady Pirate Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon. The Phoenix finished with a three-round tournament with a mark of 929 (307-312-310).
Elon was led by the duo of Sunna Vidisdottir and Emily Brooks, who both posted final scores of 228 to tie for 21st out of 90 golfers. Brooks finished her three rounds (75-76-77) with nine birdies, tied for the fifth-most in the event, while Vidisdottir (77-74-77) notched 32 pars over her three rounds of action.
Two strokes back in a tie for 25th was Kelsey Badmaev. Badmaev carded a 230 (75-76-79) and had five birdies.
In a tie for 75th was Taylor Wilkerson, who posted a 246 (80-89-77). Kathryn Buckingham's score of 252 (82-86-84) placed her 84th.
Katie Partridge competed as an individual and shot a 238 (84-80-74) to tie for 53rd.
Avery George of Middle Tennessee State claimed medalist honors with a 1-under-par 215 (75-67-73).
The team title went to 43rd-ranked East Tennessee State, which posted an 897 (288-308-301) over two days. The remainder of the top five included Middle Tennessee State (901), host East Carolina (904), Georgia State (908) and Old Dominion (909).
The Phoenix bested Boston College (937), Winthrop (938), William & Mary (939), UNCW (948), Longwood (948) and Appalachian State (978).
Elon will play its final tournament of the fall on Oct. 28-29 at the Palmetto Intercollegiate in Kiawah Island, S.C.
Appalachian State finishes 16th at Lady Pirate Intercollegiate
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Appalachian State carded a final-round 326 on Tuesday for a tournament total of 978 to finish 16th at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate.
Appalachian State shot a first-round 321 and a second-round 331 on Monday.
Haley Zagoria finished in a tie for 63rd overall with a final-round of 83 for a tournament total of 241. Hannah Craver finished in a tie for 66th with a third-round score of 83 to bring her overall score to 243. Finishing in a tie for 71st was Madalyn Davis, who fired a 78 in the final round to finish with a 244. Lily Yatawara shot an 82 in the third round to finish with a 259 for the tournament. Wenjia Cao rounded out the scores for the Mountaineers, shooting a final-round 86 for a three round total of 262 and finishing 88th.
Appalachian will return to action when it travels to Hartford, Conn., on Oct. 21 to compete in the Quinnipiac Classic at TPC Highlands.
