No. 15 Furman 0, UNCG 0 (2OT)
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Furman keeper Sven Lissek recorded three saves and UNCG keeper Stephen Moffitt had two as the teams played to a 0-0 draw at UNCG in Southern Conference men’s soccer action on Tuesday evening.
The draw saw 15th-ranked Furman run its unbeaten streak to eight matches as the Paladins moved to 7-1-2 overall and 0-0-2 in SoCon play. Furman has recorded seven shutouts in its last eight matches and has allowed just one goal since suffering a 1-0 loss to nationally ranked Akron on Sept. 1, in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. With the tie, UNCG moved to 5-5-2 overall and 0-0-1 in league play.
The tie runs the Spartans' unbeaten streak against Furman to seven straight games as they have gone 6-0-1 since 2008 in the series.
The annual renewal of the Furman-UNCG rivalry proved to be a defensive stalemate as both were credited with just three shots on goal, while the Spartans managed a slim 17-16 edge in total shots.
Senior Michael Gandier helped create trouble in the UNCG box in the opening half. Possession was split between the sides until Furman gained the momentum in the final 10 minutes before intermission. Josh Fusan produced one of the best chances for the Paladins during the second half, only to miss wide. Martin Ontiveros finished the contest with a team-high four shots.
Lissek, a native Sewau, Germany, was called on to turn away three Spartan shots in the final 20 minutes of regulation to force overtime. UNCG managed a 5-1 edge in shots during the two 10-minute periods, but Furman’s defense did not allow a shot on goal down the stretch.
The clean sheet was Lissek’s sixth of the season. Moffitt’s shutout was his sixth, as well.
Furman returns to action on Saturday when it takes on the Davidson Wildcats at Alumni Stadium in Davidson, N.C. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
UNCG is at Appalachian State on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Georgia State 2, Wofford 1 (OT)
ATLANTA – Georgia State’s Cory Plasker scored in the 95th minute to lead the Panthers to a 2-1 win over Wofford on Tuesday.
With the loss, Wofford’s six-game winning streak was snapped as it moved to 6-4-1 overall. The Panthers improved to 4-5-1 overall on the season with the win.
The Panthers would score the game-winning goal when Plasker tapped in a header pass from Stephen McGill off a free kick by Aaron Jones.
The Terriers would strike first in the 22nd minute when Connor Davis caught a deflected pass and buried a shot from 8 yards out past the GSU goalkeeper for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.
In the second half, Georgia State would tie the match up 1-1 in the 53rd minute when McGill scored third goal of the year off a cross from Salomon Lorenzano.
In the first overtime period, Wofford would create the first chance when Davis had a header saved in the 93rd minute. GSU ended the contest shortly after that.
In the first half, Wofford had the first opportunity in the seventh minute, when freshman forward Matthew Aurednik had a header inside the 6-yard box off a cross go just wide of the goal.
Wofford would have another great chance after getting fouled right outside the box in the 16th minute, but sophomore midfielder Nestor Jaramillo’s free kick just slipped past the right post.
Wofford would have another great opportunity at the end of the half in the 42nd minute when senior forward Blair Gaines attempted to lob the keeper from 8 yards but just clipped the top of the crossbar, keeping the score at 1-0 going into the half.
The Panthers would create a great opportunity to take the lead in the 68th minute when Michael Nwiloh’s header off a cross missed just wide left of the goal.
Both teams would create opportunities for the rest of the half but neither could capitalize, forcing the game into overtime.
For the match, Wofford outshot the Panthers 15-7, while Georgia State had the edge in corners 8-7.
In goal for the Terriers, freshman Garrett Closs took the loss, facing seven shots and making two saves. For Georgia State, CJ Cochran faced 15 Terrier shots and made four saves, earning the victory.
The Terriers return home to Snyder Field for a big Southern Conference matchup on Saturday when they host No. 16 Elon at 7 p.m.
