Elon's Dean, Waterman named to CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District First Team
ELON, N.C – Juniors Nathan Dean and Jason Waterman of the Elon University men’s soccer team were selected to the 2013-14 Capital One Academic All-District III first team Thursday, as announced by the College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), based on their performances both in the classroom and on the pitch this season.
This is the fifth straight year that the maroon and gold has placed a member on the Capital One Academic All-District teams. Elon was also tied with Duke and Memphis for having the most selections on the academic all-district first team.
Dean, an economics major with a 3.84 cumulative GPA, has started every game in goal this season. The Liverpool, England, native has five shutouts on the year while posting a GAA of 0.90 with 59 saves and a save average of .787. Dean was also recognized as the Southern Conference’s Player of the Week twice this season and earned the league’s Student-Athlete of the Week award on Sept. 18.
Waterman currently leads the team in points with 20 and has seven goals and six assists on the year from his striker position. A communication science major with a 3.65 GPA, the Bloomington, Ind., native has a pair of multi-goal games this year and earned a spot on the SoCon’s All-Academic team last season.
This is the first academic all-district honor for Dean and Waterman, and the duo will have an opportunity to earn Capital One Academic All-America honors later next month.
Elon will host its final regular-season match this Saturday, as the Phoenix welcomes SoCon foe and I-40 rival UNCG to Rudd Field. That match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Wofford’s Padula named to CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District First Team
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford men’s soccer senior defender Billy Padula has been named to the 2013-14 CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District IV Men’s Soccer Team for his accomplishments on the field and in the classroom. This is his first CoSIDA Capital One honor.
A senior from Irmo, S.C., Padula has started in all 15 games this season for the Terriers. Not only has he been a huge part of the defense, but has also made a huge impact on the offense. He currently has a team-high and Southern Conference-leading nine assists on the season. His nine assists currently ranks in the top five in NCAA Division I men’s soccer.
As a double major in business economics and government, Padula has excelled in the classroom, posting an overall grade point average of 3.88.
Padula was selected to the 2012 Southern Conference Fall All-Academic Team. He is also a three-time member of the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll.
The Capital One Academic All-District team is selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). These teams are selected to recognize the nation’s top student‐athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
Wofford is in District IV, which includes schools in Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Nominees must have at least a 3.30 grade point average.
The Wofford men’s soccer team is back in action on Saturday, when it travels to Greenville, S.C., to take on the Furman Paladins its final Southern Conference match of the season at 7 p.m.
