Furman tied for 13th at Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Senior Aubrie Street (+2) and sophomore Valentina Romero (+2) each fired a 74 to pace Furman on Sunday in the opening round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at the par-72, 6,320 yard Stallion Mountain Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nev.
Street, who teed off of No. 10, birdied her final hole, and Romero notched birdies on 6 and 13, both par-5s, to finish the round in a tie for 31st place, four strokes behind leader Elin Arvidsson of Texas Tech, who shot a 70 to open the tournament.
Paladin freshman Taylor Totland (+3) registered birdies on three of her first nine holes to card a 74 in the opening round, tying for 43rd place, while sophomore Stephanie Carlozzi (+5) birdied the par-4 No. 7 to tie for 67th with a 75 in Sunday’s round. Junior Daffodil Sanchez (+20) enters the second round in 95th place after shooting a 92 in the opening round.
UNLV (E) holds a two-stroke lead over second-place Minnesota (+2) and San Diego State (+2). UCF (+3) is fourth, followed by Texas Tech (+4) in fifth place. The Paladins (+12) are tied with Fresno State and Denver for 13th place following the first day of competition.
Second-round play in the 54-hole tournament begins Monday at 7:30 a.m. Pacific. Furman will tee off of No. 10 at 8:48 a.m.
Elon 14th at suspended Palmetto Intercollegiate
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Day one of the 2013 Palmetto Intercollegiate was supposed to see 36 holes played by each of the 19 competing teams, but darkness set in during round No. 2, forcing play to be suspended until Monday morning. Prior to the halt, the Elon women's golf team sat 14th with a mark of 552 (317-235).
For the Phoenix, Kelsey Badmaev finished the day in a tie for 21st out of the 99 players with a mark of 128 (76-52). When play resumes on Monday morning, Badmaev will begin on hole No. 4, her 13th of round two. Badmaev shot a 76 in her first round and posted two of her three birdies thus far over her first 18 holes.
In a tie for 39th is Emily Brooks, who will resume play with a score of 134 (77-57). Brooks' lone birdie of the day came during her first 18 holes. She will also start play on hole No. 4, her 14th of round two.
With a score of 139 (80-59), Kathryn Buckingham is tied for 52nd after day one. She tallied three birdies on Sunday, including one in the first round. Buckingham has four holes remaining in her second round and will start Monday's action on hole No. 7.
Kristi Ingram's mark of 148 (84-64) has her tied for 87th. Ingram has two birdies through 32 holes and will finish off her final four holes by starting with the par-3 seventh hole on Monday.
Finally, Katie Partridge will pick up in a tie for 91st with a score of 154 (87-67). She has tallied three birdies, two during her first 18 holes of the day. Partridge, who has three holes left in her second round, will begin her day on hole No. 7.
The individual lead is shared by College of Charleston's Laura Fuenfstueck and GRU Augusta's Jessica Haigwood at 2-under par.
The 19-team field is being paced by No. 39 Kansas. When play ended for the day, Kansas had a 543 (297-246) and was 13-over par. The team standings were set by the team's mark relative to par.
Elon, which is +45, leads two top-100 programs – No. 95 Michigan (310-251=561; +47) and No. 46 Missouri State (317-251=568; +63).
Round two will resume at 8:30 a.m. on Monday morning, with the third and final round starting immediately after.
UNCG finishes 18th at Landfall Tradition
WILMINGTON, N.C. – The UNCG women’s golf team concluded 54 holes of play at the difficult three-day Landfall Tradition hosted by UNCW at the Country Club of Landfall’s Pete Dye Course.
Alabama won the event with a 3-over-par 867 through three rounds to win by eight strokes over Duke. UNCG posted a 994 (330-332-332) in the 54-hole event to finish 18th against competition that included 14 nationally ranked teams.
Sophomore Sammie Buchanan recorded the Spartans’ top round Sunday with a 7-over-par 79 to finish tied for 82nd at 244. Junior Berglind Bjornsdottir also posted a 244 in the three-day event for an 82nd-place showing, as she finished with an 85 Sunday.
In addition to the Spartans, the field features host UNCW, Alabama, Arizona, Clemson, Duke, Iowa State, Michigan State, Mississippi, North Carolina, NC State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Purdue, South Carolina, Virginia and Wake Forest.
