Zagoria, Appalachian State win Quinnipiac Classic
CROMWELL, Conn. – Appalachian State finished in first place at the Quinnipiac Classic played at TPC River Highlands. The tournament finished on Tuesday, with the Mountaineers finishing five strokes better than second-place Fairfield University.
The Mountaineers were led by individual champion Haley Zagoria, who fired a 78 on Tuesday to finish the tournament with a 156 and finish two strokes better than second-place Nicole Scola of Quinnipiac.
Hannah Craver didn’t finish far behind Zagoria and finished tied for third place individually. Craver shot a 79 on the final round to finish three strokes better than her Monday score and conclude the tournament with a 161.
In fifth place, Madalyn Davis shot a 79, which was six strokes better than her first round, on the final 18 holes to finish with a 164 overall. Emily Stinson finished in a tie for 15th overall after bettering her first round by a stroke and shooting an 86 to finish with a 173. Tied for 30th was Lily Yatawara, who shot a 97 to finish with a 196 over both rounds of the tournament.
This is the first team win and individual win that Appalachian State has boasted so far during its fall season. The Mountaineers will host Wofford on Thursday before heading to Rock Hill, S.C. to finish off their fall schedule at a tournament hosted by Winthrop.
Western Carolina finishes fourth at Fighting Camel Classic
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Western Carolina sophomore Taylor Allison jumped one position in the final standings, closing the fall semester amidst a two-way tie for sixth place in guiding the Catamounts to a fourth-place showing at the Fighting Camel Fall Classic, which concluded Tuesday afternoon at the par-72, 6,026-yard Keith Hills Country Club.
Allison finished the 54-hole event with a 2-over par 74 to match her second-round score, placing in a tie for sixth overall. The Elizabeth City, N.C., product played much of her final round at 1-over par after two bogeys against a birdie through her first five holes. After recording eight straight pars, Allison had back-to-back bogeys on the holes 1 and 2 before birdying the par-3, 145-yard third for the first time in the event to move back to 2-over par, where she finished.
All told, Allison tied for the most pars in the tournament with 41, shooting a combined 224 in the tournament.
WCU’s first-round leader, sophomore Kim Mitchell, slipped on the final day from a tie for second into an 11th-place tie with a closing-round 6-over-par 78. The transfer had a noisy scorecard with seven holes over par countered by three birdies. She finished the event at 10-over-par 226, tallying nine birdies over the two-day event, tied for the third-most among the 59-golfer field.
Redshirt sophomore Kristin Swindell made the biggest jump of the final round for WCU, matching the opening-round score of her transfer classmate Mitchell with a 1-over-par 73 over the final 18 holes to jump 22 spots on the final day, finishing at 232.
Rounding out WCU’s scoring five were freshman Olivia Landino in a tie for 31st at 234 and sophomore Mariah Hopkins in a tie for 38th at 236.
With its entire scoring five inside the top 11 overall, tournament host Campbell walked away with its 15th tournament championship, winning by 10 strokes over second-place Old Dominion. The Camels carded an event-record score of 887 – 11 strokes better than the previous record set by the same squad one year ago. Old Dominion (897) was 10 strokes better than third-place Mercer (907), which edged the Catamounts (909), with High Point rounding out the top five with a score of 918.
Defending individual medalist Kaylin Yost from Campbell shared the top honors with two others as both Mary Alice Murphy of Mercer and ODU’s Elizabeth Haycock finished atop the leader board with identical scores of 221. Murphy rallied from a 14th-place tie after 36 holes with an event-low round of 69 on Tuesday – matching the second-best round carded in the tournament history.
Including Tuesday’s finale, Western Carolina closed the fall portion of its 2013-14 schedule with five top-10 finishes, including four-straight top-fives, with three consecutive fourth-place showings. The team returns to the links for the first of three straight trips to Florida in early February at the UCF Challenge, hosted at the Eagle Creek Golf Course in Orlando, Fla., Feb. 9-11.
The Citadel finishes fourth at Savannah College of Art & Design Fall Invitatioanl
SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Citadel golf team, behind the play of Eraina Manor and McKenzie Duncan, finished fourth at the Savannah College of Art & Design Fall Invitational and drew to a close its fall season on Tuesday afternoon at the Wilmington Island Club.
Manor (78-76=154; +12) and Duncan (79-76=155; +13), who tied for fourth and seventh, respectively, became the fifth and sixth golfers in program history to card top-10 finishes.
The Bulldogs also got a strong performance from Kellie Anderson (82-76=158; +16), who finished tied for 18th after becoming the third player on the team to post a round in the 70s.
The Citadel also included scorecards from Renata Sucha (82-89=171; +29) and Hollie Salvo (97-93=190; +48), who placed 40th and 48th, respectively.
The host Bees brought home top team honors with score of 600 (296-304; +32), followed by USC-Beaufort and Embry-Riddle.
Alazne Urizar (72-72=144; +2) edged teammate Sofia Molinaro by one stroke to earn top individual honors for Savannah College of Art & Design.
