Zagoria, Appalachian State leads Quinnipiac Classic
CROMWELL, Conn. – Appalachian State kicked off the Quinnipiac Classic on Monday and finished the first round in first place in the six-team field. The tournament is being held at TPC River Highlands.
The Mountaineers carded a 332 on day one to finish eight strokes better than second-place Quinnipiac. The Mountaineers have three in the top 10 individually after day one.
Haley Zagoria is currently first overall after firing a first-round 78 on Monday. Hannah Craver shot an 82 and is tied for fourth individually. Madalyn Davis is tied for eighth after shooting an 85 for the first round. Emily Stinson is in a tie for 11th after firing an 87. Lily Yatawara shot a 99 and is currently in a tie for 29th after play on Monday.
Western Carolina fourth at Fighting Camel Classic
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Led by sophomore Kim Mitchell in a tie for the runner-up position, Western Carolina has two women’s golfers inside the top 10 individually to sit in fourth place after 36 of the 54 scheduled holes at the Fighting Camel Fall Classic, hosted by Campbell at the par-72, 6,026-yard Keith Hills Country Club.
Mitchell (148) carded rounds of 1-over-par 73 and 3-over 75 to stand tied with four other golfers in second place, two strokes off the lead through two rounds. Her classmate, Taylor Allison (150), is in a four-way tie for seventh place, an additional two strokes back after rounds of 76 and 74.
Paired with golfers from Iowa and High Point, the Catamount scoring five will tee off on the fifth through eighth holes on Tuesday morning as a part of the shotgun start at 8:45 am.
Sophomore Mariah Hopkins (157) posted rounds of 78 and 79 to sit in a tie for 39th, recording three bogeys, but was saddled with four double-bogies over the 36 holes. Freshman Olivia Landino (158) trimmed six strokes off her first-round 82 to shoot 76 in the second to sit tied for 44th overall, one stroke back of Hopkins.
Rounding out WCU’s scoring five is Kristin Swindell, tied for 47th overall with rounds of 77 and 82 for a 36-hole score of 159.
Tournament host Campbell (302-290=592) shot a tournament-record 2-over-par 290 in Monday’s second round and leads Old Dominion (296-299=595) by three strokes in the 11-school field. Future Southern Conference member Mercer (313-294=607) sits in third, just one stroke ahead of WCU in fourth place.
Kimberly Bradbury (146) of ODU leads the 59-golfer field after shooting rounds of 72 and 74, holding a two-stroke advantage over the five-way tie for second place.
