The Citadel 3, Samford 2
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Nicole Levermann scored two goals and Lea Raedle tallied the game-winner to lead The Citadel to a 3-2 victory over Southern Conference leader Samford in women's soccer action Friday evening.
The Citadel (4-8-2, 2-5 SoCon) defeated Samford for the first time in seven all-time meetings and handed the host Bulldogs their first home loss of the season. Samford (10-4-1, 4-2-1) had lost only to Furman, Texas and Memphis and boasted wins over Tennessee, Auburn and Vanderbilt.
Levermann gave The Citadel leads of 1-0 and 2-1, the latter five minutes into the second half, but both times Samford responded, including a goal by Amanda Abbott that knotted the game at 2 less than a minute after Levermann's second score.
The Bulldogs eventually took the lead for good in the 59th minute, when Raedle scored off an assist by Ana Mesa to make it 3-2. Samford took 11 shots the rest of the way, but Naomi Carter stopped six of them to secure the victory.
Levermann's goals were her third and fourth of the season, giving her 16 in her career and moving the senior in a tie with Julie Austin and Vanessa Aponte for fifth in school history.
Raedle scored her second goal of the year, while Mesa collected her third assist of the season and 10th of her career to move into sole possession of second place in the school record book, five behind Aponte.
The Citadel had scored only one goal and was never ahead in any of its previous six road games this season before taking the lead on three separate occasions on Friday.
Samford outshot The Citadel 26-5, but Carter was equal to the task with 12 saves, increasing the freshman goalkeeper's SoCon-leading total to 130. One of her saves came on a Trine Taule penalty kick attempt in the first half with The Citadel holding on to a 1-0 lead after Levermann's first goal of the night.
The Citadel will look for the weekend sweep when it plays at Chattanooga on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Mocs are 5-9 overall after Friday's 3-2 nonconference home win over Francis Marion and 0-6 in the SoCon.
Samford will return to action on Sunday, when the Bulldogs play host to Francis Marion. The nonconference contest is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start from the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.
UNCG 1, Davidson 0
DAVIDSON, N.C. – UNCG’s Ashley Stokes scored the lone goal of the game in the first half in spoiling Davidson’s senior night Friday at Alumni Stadium in Southern Conference women’s soccer action.
The Wildcats fell to 5-8-3 overall and an even 3-3 in league play as their two-game win streak was halted. UNCG improved to 8-5-2 overall and 3-1-2 in SoCon play. It was Davidson’s third straight 1-0 defeat to the Spartans, who have won the last four meetings in a row since the ‘Cats swept two games from them in 2009.
The Spartans extended their 25-game road unbeaten streak in SoCon games. The Blue and Gold are 7-1-1 in road contests this season.
Stokes scored her third goal of the season at the 25:56 mark when a long loose through ball was misplayed by the Wildcat defense in the box, where the forward gathered in the ball and shot near post.
Twice, Davidson had good looks on its two corner kicks but both times just missed tying it up with Spartan keeper Jamie Simmons stopping the attempts.
UNCG held a 12-9 edge in shots and earned four corners to the ‘Cats’ two.
Rachel Locke had three saves to give her 72 on the year, one away from her career high set last year. Simmons picked up her seventh shutout of the season after making five saves. Simmons made a couple of key saves in the second half, including tipping a ball away from the goal off a corner kick in the 63rd minute.
UNCG’s freshman back line of Rebecca Burrows, Georgia Brown, Kelsi Peters and Nicole Epstein limited the Davidson offense to just nine shots in the game.
Prior to the game, Davidson seniors Renae Cairns, Tori Krause, Kelsey Krueger, Lindsay Blum, Meg Sanborn, Lauren Mihan and Lauren Swany were honored as part of Senior Night.
Davidson will finish out celebrating its 25th anniversary weekend with a 2 p.m. contest Sunday at Alumni Stadium. Past alumni will be honored during halftime of the game.
The Spartans finish the road trip against Georgia Southern on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Statesboro, Ga.
Furman 1, Western Carolina 0
CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Freshman Carlie Couch scored in the eighth minute and sophomore Rose Hull recorded five saves to lead Furman to a 1-0 victory over Western Carolina in Southern Conference women’s soccer action on Friday night at the Catamounts Athletics Complex.
With the victory, Furman improved to 11-3-1 overall and 5-1-0 in SoCon play. The Paladins have won eight of their last nine matches, including five shutouts. The Catamounts dropped to 7-7-1 overall and 2-5 in the conference.
Couch provided Furman all the offense it would need on the Paladins’ first shot of the evening. Sophomore Stephanie DeVita headed a pass into Couch’s path and the Tifton, Ga., native poked home her seventh goal of the season at the 7:10 mark.
Western Carolina forced Hull into four saves in the first half and a fifth save in the opening minutes of the second period, but the Paladin defense shut down the Catamount attack over the final 30 minutes to help Furman to its seventh shutout of the season. Hull improved to 7-1 in goal this season and moved to 21-3-3 in 27 career decisions between the pipes.
Furman outshot the Catamounts 12-10 and fashioned a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Carly Tinstman took the loss for Western Carolina despite stopping five shots.
Furman caps its road trip and plays its final regular-season road match of the season on Sunday at Appalachian State. Kickoff in Boone, N.C., is set for 2 p.m.
Western Carolina returns to action on Sunday, hosting Wofford at 2 p.m. The Catamounts will honor their four seniors, Alex Gastesi, Christine Kaznowski, Kayla Sedgley and Katie Weigel.
Elon 3, Georgia Southern 2 (OT)
STATESBORO, Ga. – Olivia Mackey’s golden goal in the 93rd minute provided the Elon University women’s soccer team with a 3-2 overtime win over Southern Conference foe Georgia Southern on Friday.
Mackey scored on a free kick from 40 yards away and helped the maroon and gold improve to 9-2-4 on the year and 3-1-2 during SoCon play. The Phoenix was also aided by a two-goal performance by Catherine Brinkman, who scored in the 34th and the 64th minutes of the match. Georgia Southern fell to 4-8-2 (2-3-1 SoCon).
Brinkman put the first points of the match on the scoreboard for the Phoenix in the 34th minute. The Clearwater, Fla., native took a pass from Simi Dhaliwal at the penalty spot and sent a right-footed strike to the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles would strike back after intermission and score two quick goals in the 50th and the 52nd minutes to take a 2-1 lead over the Phoenix. GSU’s Alex Murphy scored the first goal off a rebound on a free kick to tie the match at 1-all. Just minutes later, Caitlin Tongco hit a looping shot from the top of the box to put Georgia Southern up front, 2-1.
Elon continued to chase the equalizer and finally found it as Brinkman scored her second goal of the match on a rebound off of an Alexis de Groot shot in the 64th minute to tie the score at 2-2.
Brinkman nearly had the game-winner with less than a minute left in the match but was turned away by GSU keeper Molly Williams, and the teams went into extra time knotted at 2-2.
Three minutes into the extra overtime period, Elon drew a foul on the Eagles that set the stage for Mackey’s heroics, which gave the Phoenix its second straight win and pushed its unbeaten streak to four.
Elon dominated the Eagles in shots, 20-9, including a 12-6 mark on frame. The Phoenix also had a slight 5-3 advantage in corners.
The Phoenix returns to action on Sunday at Davidson. That match is scheduled for a 2 p.m. kickoff. Georgia Southern is back in action Sunday when it hosts UNCG at 2 p.m.
Chattanooga 3, Francis Marion 2
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s soccer team got goals from three different players to snare a 3-2 win over Francis Marion on Friday night at Finley Stadium in nonconference play.
The Mocs improved to 5-9 on the year, while the Patriots remain winless at 0-14.
Chattanooga’s first goal came off of a corner kick from senior Andria Aurand. She sent the kick to the far side of the goal, where it was picked up by junior Crystal Mackezyk, who sent a header to sophomore Clare Latham in front of the net to put the Mocs up 1-0 in the 12th minute. That score would stand through the remainder of the first half.
It wouldn’t take long in the second half for Chattanooga to take a 2-0 advantage. At the 48:47 mark of the game, Mackezyk sent a pass from the left side to senior Kelly Crew at the top of the box and she would get the shot past the Francis Marion keeper for her first goal of the year.
The Patriots would charge back with a pair of goals to tie it up 2-2. Yasmin Bunter sent a pass from the left side to Allie Duckworth just outside the 6-yard box to cut UTC’s lead to 2-1 in the 51st minute. In the 64th minute, FMU’s leading scorer, Chanel Harris, picked up a pass from Bunter on a free kick from the right side to make it a 2-2 affair with just over 26 minutes to play.
The final score of the game would come in the 76th minute. Mackezyk recorded her third assist of the game as she sent a pass to freshman Monica Speth, whose shot from the left side hit off the left post and bounced across to hit the post on the right and crossed the goal line for the game-winner.
Senior Taylor Mangrum recorded nine saves for her fourth win of the year. The Patriots had a chance to tie it up with less than two minutes on a shot from Caroline Edmonds, but it was scooped up by Mangrum to preserve the victory.
Chattanooga will return to action Sunday afternoon in the regular-season home finale. The Mocs will honor seniors Aurand, Mangrum and Kelly Crew prior to the match against The Citadel that kicks off at 2 p.m.
Appalachian State 0, Wofford 0 (2OT)
BOONE, N.C. – The Wofford women’s soccer team earned a draw against Southern Conference opponent Appalachian State 0-0 on Friday night.
With the tie, the Terriers moved to 6-3-4 overall and 2-1-3 in the SoCon. The Mountaineers moved to 6-5-3 overall and 3-1-3 in SoCon play.
In the first half, the Terriers created the first chance of the match when senior forward Emily Bougas attempted to lob goalkeeper Megan Roberson, but her shot was cleared before reaching the goal in the fourth minute.
The Mountaineers responded in the seventh minute when Samantha Childress had a shot saved by Wofford’s senior goalkeeper, Kimberly Cohn.
Senior midfielder Maggie Bosley created another chance for the Terriers in the 20th minute when her shot attempt was saved by Roberson.
Roberson would have to make another save in the 34th minute on junior forward Annika Jansson’s attempt on goal.
Wofford would outshoot Appalachian State 4-2 but could not capitalize on any of its chances as the teams went into halftime deadlocked at 0-0.
In the second half, the Mountaineers would have the first opportunity in the 46th minute when a corner kick hit off the crossbar and Aubrey Fletcher had her rebound shot saved by Cohn.
Appalachian State would create another opportunity when Sam Neill had her shot sail right of the goal in the 51st minute. The Mountaineers would continue the pressure in the 53rd minute, when Julia Holz’s shot missed wide left of the goal.
Wofford would create its first chance of the half in the 80th minute, when Jansson had a shot inside the 18-yard box miss just wide left of the goal.
The Mountaineers would create another chance in response with a shot by Sonia Sanchez saved by Cohn in the 81st minute.
The first chance in overtime would come in the second period from the Mountaineers when Jane Cline had her shot saved by Cohn in the 104th minute.
The teams would battle it out for a full 110 minutes, but neither team could find a goal as the match would end scoreless, 0-0.
For the match, Appalachian State outshot the Terriers 16-7 and won the corner battle 10-4.
In goal for Wofford, Cohn earned her sixth shutout of the season, facing 16 Mountaineer shots and making four saves.
For Appalachian State, Roberson earned her second shutout of the season facing, seven Terrier shots and making two saves.
The Terriers return to action on Sunday, Oct. 20, when they travel to Cullowhee, N.C., to take on Southern Conference opponent Western Carolina at 2 p.m. The team returns home on Friday, Oct. 25, when it hosts Davidson College at Snyder Field. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
