Furman finishes 17th at Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational
AUSTIN, Texas – Senior Aubrie Street (+6) shot a par 72 to tie for 39th place, leading Furman on Tuesday in the final round of the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational at the par-72, 6,143-yard University of Texas Golf Club.
Street teed off of 16, registering a birdie on the par-3, then birdied the par-4 18 to head to the front at 2-under. She birdied 9 and 14, both par-5s, to finish the tournament 18 strokes behind individual medalist Allison Lee (-12) of UCLA, who carded a 67 in the final round.
Paladin freshman Taylor Totland (+9) tied for 53rd place after carding an 81 with two birdies in Tuesday's round, while junior Laura DeMarco (+17) shot a 79 in the final round to finish the tournament tied for 75. Senior Ingunn Gunnarsdottir (+19) also recorded a 79 on Tuesday, placing in a tie for 82nd, and sophomore Valentina Romero (+20) finished 85th after notching a final-round 77.
UCLA (-22) fired a third-round 275 to win the tournament by six strokes over Arizona State (-16). Miami (-5) placed third, followed by Iowa State (-2) and SMU (+8). Furman (+47) ended the tournament in 17th place.
The Paladins will conclude the fall season Oct. 27-29 at the UNLV Fall Showdown in Las Vegas, Nev. Furman will open the 2014 spring season at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C., March 7-9.
Wofford finishes fifth at JU Classic as final round canceled
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The final round of the Jacksonville University Courtyard Classic was canceled on Tuesday, resulting in the Wofford women’s golf team earning fifth place.
Rainy weather mixed with high tides made the par-72, 5.987-yard Marsh Landing Country Club unplayable, forcing the cancelation of the final round.
Wofford shot a 17-over-par 305 and a 14-over-par 302 on Monday to finish the tournament at 31-over par.
Junior Lauren Dunbar led the way for Wofford, earning a tie for eighth place with a 36-hole total of 5-over-par 149. Dunbar moved up 12 spots from 20th place after Monday’s first round by carding a 1-over-par 73 in the second round. Sophomore Maegan Higgins earned a top-20 at 7-over-par.
College of Charleston won the team battle at 14-over par, while Florida Atlantic’s Jacqueline Shelly took the individual title at 1-under-par 143 (70-73).
The conclusion of the tournament wrapped up the fall season for the Wofford women’s golf team. The Terriers begin the spring campaign Feb. 17 in Fernandina Beach, Fla., competing in the Amelia Island Collegiate.
