Appalachian State?s Strickland named WOTW

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Appalachian State’s Zack Strickland has been named the Southern Conference wrestler of the week for all competition from Jan. 3-8. The selection is made by the league office.

Strickland, a redshirt freshman, went 2-0 in a pair of dual meets on Sunday in Edwardsville, Ill.

The 165-pounder from Muncy, Pa., picked up a 9-0 major decision over SoCon newcomer SIUE’s Logan Taylor to help the Mountaineers to a 28-9 win over the Cougars. The win extended Appalachian State’s winning streak in league competition to 10 duals, dating back to 2011.

Strickland followed that up with a 4-3 win over Northern Illinois’ Dan Burk in a dual the Mountaineers dropped 26-12.

With the wins, Strickland improved to 17-9 on the season and remained perfect in dual action, moving to 7-0.

The award is the first of Strickland’s career.

Appalachian State (5-2, 2-0 SoCon) return to action Jan. 15 when it hosts Campbell at 7 p.m.
