Appalachian
State tops SIUE, falls to Northern Illinois
EDWARDSVILLE,
Ill. - Appalachian State’s wrestling team continued its Southern Conference
winning streak, defeating SoCon newcomer SIUE, 28-9, but came up short in its
final dual of the day, falling to Northern Illinois, 26-12, Sunday afternoon at
the Sam M. Vadalabene Center.
With the split, the Mountaineers (5-2, 2-0 SoCon) remain perfect in
conference play on the season and increase their conference winning streak to
10 matches, dating back to 2011. Appalachian State spoiled SIUE's first home
SoCon dual, as the Cougars are in their first full season as an associate
member of the league.
Four Mountaineers nabbed 2-0 records on the day, highlighted by redshirt
sophomore Dominic Parisi (125 pounds) and redshirt freshman Zack Strickland
(165), who both remained perfect in duals for the season.
Sophomore Colin Hedash (174) and redshirt sophomore Paul Weiss (197) also
finished perfect on the day, both tallying two decisions.
In the match against SIUE (3-7, 1-1 SoCon), Appalachian State jumped out
to an 18-0 lead, headlined by a second-period pin by Chris Johnson over Brandon
Brindley at 141 pounds. For Johnson, it was his fourth pin of the season.
Despite SIUE’s Kyle Loman picking up a win at 157 pounds, the Mountaineers
continued to cruise with Strickland's major decision and a pair of decisions by
Hedash and Weiss, propelling the Mountaineers to the 28-9 win over the Cougars.
Against Northern Illinois (6-3, 0-1 MAC), Parisi gave Appalachian State a
strong start, earning his 21st victory of the year with a 9-2 decision over
NIU's Derek Elmore. The Mountaineers could not find the scoreboard after the
Parisi victory until 165 pounds, when Strickland grabbed his second victory of
the day, earning a 4-3 decision over Dan Burk.
Hedash and Weiss each tallied decisions, but the Mountaineers came up
short, falling 26-12.
The Mountaineers look to continue their conference winning streak on
Tuesday, Jan. 15, as they continue SoCon action, hosting Campbell. Action from
Varsity Gym is slated for 6:30 p.m.

Chattanooga falls to
No. 9 Illinois
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The
University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team battled another top-10
opponent Sunday, hosting No. 9 Illinois at Maclellan Gym. The Mocs raced out to
a 10-0 lead with wins in the first three matches, but the Fighting Illini used
the heart of their lineup to score a 29-10 win.
Sophomore Kevin Malone got UTC started at heavyweight. He
scored a 2-1 overtime win against Chris Lopez for a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Nick
Soto followed that with a 14-1 major decision over Dominic Olivieri at 125,
giving the Mocs a 7-0 advantage.
Freshman Marvin Lopez was also impressive in his 5-3 win
over Logan Arlis. Lopex used a takedown in the first period, a reversal in the
second, and more than four minutes of riding time to improve to 8-7 on the
year.
The Mocs are 4-5 in duals this season, while Illinois
improved to 4-0. Four of the Mocs’ five losses have come against teams ranked
the top 20, including three in the top 10.
UTC could not get another win in the final seven matches of
the dual. Senior Josh Condon came the closest, falling 5-4 to No. 8 Conrad
Polz. Condon scored on three escapes and a stalling penalty in the loss.

at 125, 133, 197 and heavyweight, while the Mocs were without junior Alex
Hudson (149) and senior Niko Brown (197).
The Mocs are back in action on Jan. 27 when they open
Southern Conference action against The Citadel. Match time is set for 2 p.m. in
