Goodwyn
leads VMI contingent at Franklin & Marshall Open
LANCASTER,
Pa. – Freshman 133-pounder Brandon Goodwyn led the Virginia Military Institute
wrestling squad at Saturday afternoon’s Franklin & Marshall Open, hosted in
the Diplomats’ Mayser Center.
After a first-round bye, Goodwyn, who hails from Chester, Va., collected
a decisive 8-3 victory over Steve Drew of Nassau Community College, pushing the
Keydet into the 133-pound quarterfinals.
In the next round, Goodwyn picked up his first win by fall of his young
career, sticking Franco Ferraina of Drexel in the second round. In the
semifinals, Goodwyn was dropped into the consolation bracket after being edged
5-2 by Franklin & Marshall’s Rob Ruiz.
Goodwyn, who had the best outing of his first season on Post, lost his
final match of the afternoon against Maryland’s Josh Polacek 16-0.
Emmitt Kelly, Josiah Zodhiates, Michael Burnett, Michael Logan and
Michael LaPrade also competed for VMI on the day.
They Keydets return to action on Jan. 9 at Southern Conference foe Campbell
as part of a tri-match with NC State.
