The Citadel 41, SIUE 3

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel wrestling team topped SIUE 41-3 in a Wednesday evening in a Southern Conference dual match at McAlister Field House.

The win improved The Citadel's record to 4-5 overall and 3-2 in the conference, while SIUE dropped to 3-12 overall and 1-2 in conference action.

SoCon newcomer SIUE opened the match with a 12-0 deficit as the Cougars forfeited the 125- and 165-pound bouts.

Aaron Hansen, eighth-ranked Ugi Khishignyam, Matt Frisch and 14th-ranked Odie Delaney all topped their respective competition to remain unscathed in the conference.

Hansen kicked off action in the 133-pound bout against Patrick Myers. With a 2-2 score after two periods, the Summerville, S.C., native tallied an escape and a takedown in the final two minutes to collect the 5-3 decision en route to earning his 16th win of the season and fifth in conference dual meets.

Khishignyam followed Hansen's performance with a pin in the final minute over Brandon Brindley to give the Bulldogs a commanding 21-0 advantage. The win improved the Mongolia native's record to 29-3.

At 149 pounds, senior Jordan Dix posted his 14th win of the season and second by technical fall over Logun Taylor.

Frisch, who entered the match with four consecutive major-decision victories, bettered the result by earning the fall on SIUE's Kyle Lowman at the 4:32 mark.

After an 8-4 loss by Jack Duane to SIUE’s Jake Residori at 174 pounds, Josh Tuck (184) and Marshall Haas (197) earned 5-3 and 7-3 decisions, respectively, to increase the Bulldogs' margin to 38-3.

Delaney closed out the match with a hard-fought 6-2 decision over David Devine to collect his 27th win on the season and 110th of his career. The redshirt senior is now one win shy of tying Ryan McClester for third most wins in Citadel history.

Delaney will have the chance to overtake McClester on Saturday when the Bulldogs head to West Point, N.Y., for the All-Academy Championships.

SIUE's road trip continues Saturday when the Cougars face Davidson, Duke and Campbell in Lenoir, N.C. The Davidson and Campbell matches are SoCon events.

George Mason 27, VMI 12

LEXINGTON, Va. – Despite starting the evening with a pair of wins, the Virginia Military Institute wrestling team could not hold on as the visiting Patriots from George Mason University stole a win at Cocke Hall on Wednesday night, 27-12.

VMI won three matches on the night, but a run of six victories by the Patriots put the match out of reach for the Keydets (1-11). However, VMI did collect a win by fall at 174 pounds from John Dommert, who stuck Corey Smith in just over a minute.

The evening, which began at 165 pounds, started off VMI’s way with freshman Mark Darr edging out George Mason’s Ty Kneep 6-5. Dommert was next up for VMI and used his pin to extend VMI’s lead to 9-0.

Despite the Patriots (3-12) winning the next six matches, the bouts were close, including the 197-pound contest. Patriot Matt Meadows managed to just edge out VMI’s Urayoan Garcia, 3-2. After giving up bonus points in the next two bouts, VMI found itself trailing 13-9 after the heavyweight round.

The 133-pound bout was another close affair, with another rookie, Andriy Onufriyenko, being edged out 4-3 by Zach Isenhour. At 141 pounds, Ryan Goodsell found himself in a tight match with Sahid Kargbo, but the Patriot pulled out the victory 9-6.

VMI got one final victory on the evening at 149 pounds as Zeb Stewart collected his seventh victory of the year with a decisive 6-1 win over Greg Flournoy. The evening ended with a George Mason victory however, with Jaaziah Bethea getting the better of Ted Gottwald, 14-6.

VMI has a quick turnaround before its next event, which will be this Saturday as the Keydets head north to West Point, N.Y., for the All-Academy Championships, hosted at the United States Military Academy. Action is set to kick off at 10 a.m. in Army’s Gillis Field House.
