Campbell?s Merickel Tabbed Wrestler of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Campbell 197-pounder John Merickel has been named the Southern Conference wrestler of the week for all competition from Jan. 23-29. The selection is made by the league office.

Merickel went 2-0 with a pin to help the Camels to a 2-0 week in SoCon action. Campbell downed The Citadel 25-13 on Jan. 23 and topped Gardner-Webb 24-12 on Monday to move to 3-1 in the conference and second place in the league standings.

Against the Bulldogs, Merickel picked up his third pin of the season, sticking Marshall Haas in 3:45. Merickel’s win put Campbell ahead 12-0 as the Camels would cruise to the win.

The Moscow, Idaho, senior blanked Gardner-Webb’s Blake Salyer 6-0 on Monday, his Senior Day, to help Campbell complete the undefeated week.

The weekly SoCon award is the first of Merickel’s career and second for Campbell in the last three weeks. Teammate Eric Montoya claimed the award on Jan. 16.

Campbell returns to action Saturday when it will face conference foe SIUE at the Davidson Duals in Lenoir, N.C.
