Terriers Fall to Winthrop Thursday

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford men's tennis team was defeated by Winthrop, 5-2, in their 2013 home opener on a cold Thursday afternoon.  The Terriers fall to 0-2 to start the season, while the Eagles improve to 1-2.

In doubles action, the Wofford pair of Rob Galloway and Walker Heffron led the way, opening the match with an 8-4 victory at the No. 1 position.  However, Winthrop would take the next two to claim the doubles point, including an 8-7 (9-7) victory by Winthrop's Steven Patrick and Juan Pablo Boada over Wofford's Graham Duncan and Parks Thompson.

On the singles side, Winthrop won the first match, but Heffron responded for Wofford winning in straight sets over Boada 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 4 position.  At the No. 2 position, Jackson Keith battled Peter Nagovnak to sets but eventually fell 2-6, 6-4, 0-6.  In the final match of the day, Duncan edged out Corey Decandia in three sets to win 7-5, 4-6, 10-8 at the No. 5 position, but it would not be enough as Winthrop claimed the 5-2 victory.

"We lost a very difficult match to an impressive Winthrop team," said Wofford Head Coach Rod Ray when asked about the match.  "The difficult part is that we could have won today, but the sting will go away because there were a lot [of] areas where we will definitely improve with a few more contest.  We've got a good team that plays hard and will be even better in a couple of weeks. I wish we had a match tomorrow, but we will have to wait another week which will give us some time for continued development."

The Terriers will return to the court on Saturday, February 2 in Columbia, where they will face the Gamecocks of South Carolina.  The match is set for 4:00 p.m. at the Carolina Tennis Center.
