The Citadel?s Haas Named Wrestler of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Citadel’s Marshall Haas has been named the Southern Conference wrestler of the week for all competition from Jan. 16-22. The selection is made by the league office.

Haas went 1-0 with a pin in his only action of the week as the Bulldogs downed Appalachian State on Friday, 25-13, to snap the Mountaineers’ 11-match SoCon winning streak and move to the top of the league standings.

Haas, a redshirt freshman, picked up a first-period pin over Paul Weiss at 197 pounds to put The Citadel on top to stay in the contest. The South Riding, Va., native stuck Weiss in 2:23 to swing momentum back to the Bulldogs after Appalachian State had taken a 10-7 lead in the previous bout. Haas’ win sparked a string of four consecutive Citadel wins as the Bulldogs put the match out of reach.

The weekly award is the first of Haas’ career and the fifth for a Bulldog wrestler this season. Heavyweight Odie Delaney took the award on Nov. 21 and 141-pounder Ugi Khishignyam won it three straight times from Dec. 12 to Jan. 3.

The Citadel (3-3, 2-0 SoCon) returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Campbell for a SoCon bout at 7 p.m.

Also nominated: Zack Strickland (Appalachian State), Alex Medved (Gardner-Webb) and Niko Brown (Chattanooga).
