Samford’s Kemp and
Hendershot Set New Records Saturday
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- Samford Track and Field continued its
2013 season Saturday at the Birmingham Crossplex, competing at the Auburn
Indoor Invitational. Tyler Kemp and
Nathan Hendershot both set new school records while numerous others set new
personal bests and even beat facility and meet records.
Kemp and Alabama's Justin Fondren cleared identical heights
of 6-10.25 (2.09m), though Fondren won the ensuing jump-off to take the event
while Kemp placed second. Nonetheless,
his mark is a new school record that bests his previous record of 6-8.5
(2.05m), set at last season's SoCon Championships.
Hendershot also set a new school record in the men's 800
meters, running 1:51.78 to place second, just three-tenths of a second shy of
Alabama's Ken Taylor in 1:51.68. The top
three competitors in the event all broke the previous meet record of
1:52.29. Samford's Jones finished just
shy of that group, placing fourth with a personal-best time of 1:52.57.
The women's distance medley relay of Marie Demedicis, Leslie
Graf, Anna Laura Irvine and Rachel Roberts won the event with a time of
1:56.01, which beats the previous Auburn Indoor Invitational meet record of
12:14.75, set last season by Alabama.
The men's team of Layton Dorsett, Hendershot, Adam Jones and Brandon
Hazouri placed second in the relay in 10:14.16, which is nearly a minute better than the previous Crossplex
facility record of 11:13.10.
Lauren D'Alessio turned in another stellar distance
performance Saturday, placing second in the women's mile in 4:51.47. All four of Samford's competitors in the
event set new personal bests, including Rachel Roberts (4:58.60), Irvine
(5:03.74) and Rachel Wooten (5:17.81).
Defending outdoor pole vault champion and last year's indoor
runner-up Owen Wagoner finished second in Saturday's pole vault, clearing
16-6.75 (5.05m) while Ryan Cook was just behind in fourth (16-0.75,
4.90m). Samford's other top-ten
finishers Saturday included Chenelle Terry in the women's high jump (6th,
5-7.75, 1.72m), Luke Weishaar in the men's 3,000 meters (6th, 8:36.43), Hazouri
with a personal-best in the men's mile (9th, 4:15.51) and Layton Dorsett right
behind him in 10th (4:16.05).
Samford will have next weekend off before heading north to
South Bend, Ind., for the Meyo Invitational, which starts on Friday, Feb. 1 and
concludes on Saturday, Feb. 2.
Davidson Women 13th
at Wake Forest Invitational
DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson women’s track & field team
returned to action following the holiday break by taking 13th place at the Wake
Forest Invitational, hosted by the Demon Deacons at the JDL Fast Track in
Winston-Salem, N.C.
The squad picked up a total of 13 points on the day.
SoCon-foe Elon placed first, followed by Liberty and Wake Forest.
Sarah Paddon took seventh for the Wildcats in the mile run,
clocking in at 5:15.64. Cara Wilck also
competed in the event, taking 22nd with a time of 5:42.77 followed by Maggie
Rickard in 27th with 5:58.20. In the 3,000-meter run, Natalie Atabek and Erin
Osment finished seventh and eighth, respectively. Atabek crossed the line in
10:37.39, followed by Osment in 10:37.90.
Olivia Menden also picked up a top-15 finish in the
800-meter run, taking 12th overall with a time of 2:24.15. Ashlyn Gruber joined
her in the event, placing 18th in 2:27.89.
Taking third place in the 5,000-meter run was Lauren Carter,
who ran a 19:37.35.
Gracie Gordon competed in the preliminaries of both the
60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Gordon took 24th in the 60, running an
8.26 and placed 28th in the 200 with a mark of 27.87.
In the 400-meter run, Kate Kostecky ran a 1:04.53 for 32nd
place. Teammate Ashley Paige finished 38th in a time of 1:08.65.
The Wildcats will return to Wake Forest on February 1 to
compete in the JDL Hilton Garden Invitational at the JDL Fast Track.
Carter Picks Up 60m
Win as Catamounts Concludes Niswonger Invitational
Freshman Tayla Carter picked up her second win in three
meets as the Catamounts wrapped up the Niswonger Invitational at East Tennessee
State. The Catamounts earned two wins and 15 top five finishes on the last day
of the event.
Carter, a Marietta, Ga., native, won the 60-meter dash in
7.54. In her five individual sprint events, Carter has tallied three wins and
an additional two top four finishes, never finishing lower than fourth.
Teammate Raven Parrish placed fourth with her time of 7.69. In the men’s final,
Brandon Hairston (6.96) and Jerry Wickerson (6.98) finished consecutively in
sixth and seventh.
WCU ended the meet with another win, finishing three seconds
ahead of second place Kennesaw State in the men’s 4x400-meter relay. Aaron
Tribble, Demari Boswell, Aaron Harris and Earl Rahming ran the Catamounts’
fastest time of the season, 3:17.95.
Tyler Bentley matched his indoor personal best in the
60-meter hurdles at 8.44 to earn second place while teammate Justin D’Angelo
crossed the line in 8.70 (sixth). Marquis Bailey also ran in the finals,
placing eleventh with his 9.01 time.
In the field, Bob McNeil earned second place in the triple
jump (14.92m) while also earning third in the long jump (7.03m). Freshman
Christian Carswell placed fifth in the high jump clearing 1.93m (6-4). Carswell
has finished in the top three in all three indoor meets in his freshman
campaign, while picking up the personal best today.
After running the fastest 400-meter prelims time, sophomore
Genevieve Emrick fell just short of Georgia State’s Jacqueline Obi finishing
second with his time of 57.61. In the men’s 400-meter dash, freshman Earl
Rahming was the second fastest collegiate finisher (49.48) while Aaron Tribble
tallied a top five finish – placing fifth – in 49.90.
In a close men’s mile race where the top 10 was separated by
just seven seconds, Michael Cornwell ran a 4:28.39 (fifth) with Lipscomb’s Tim
Muler won the mile finishing in 4:24.81.
The men’s Distance Medley Relay team followed up their win
from a week ago tallying another top five finish – placing fourth – with their
time of 10:35.65.
Continuing with another distance event, the 3000-meter run,
sophomore Travis Alfaro knocked six seconds off his previous best time to
finish fifth (8:47.64).
The Western Carolina track & field team got out to a
strong start at the 35th Annual Niswonger Invitational in Johnson City, Tenn.,
Friday with many athletes qualifying for Saturday’s finals and the Catamounts
picking up five top five finishes.
Western Carolina fared well in both the men’s and the
women’s 400-meter dashes as the Catamounts had a combined six student-athletes
in the top 10 with three advancing to tomorrow’s finals.
On the men’s side, Brandon Hairston led the way running a
49.19. Aaron Tribble also qualified for the finals as he ran the fifth fastest
time (49.71) with freshman Earl Rahming finishing with the seventh fastest time
– one spot away from qualifying – with his 49.94. Demari Boswell ran the ninth
fastest time (50.09).
Sophomore Genevieve Emrick ran ahead of the 76 person field
of the women’s 400-meter dash, running the fastest preliminary time of 57.92.
Teammate Corina Archie-McMillan ran the tenth fastest time in the prelims, but
only the top six advanced to Saturday’s finals.
In the women’s pole vault finals, sophomore Devyn Ressler
and senior Ashley Wala placed third and fourth, each clearing 3.35m.
Shermell Wilkins and Brittany Diggs finished just outside of
the 12 qualifiers for the 60m hurdles, as the pair finished thirteenth (9.42)
and fourteenth (9.51), respectively.
In the men’s 60-meter hurdles, Marquis Bailey, Tyler Bentley
and Justin D’Angelo all qualified for Saturday’s finals. Bailey and Bentley
tied for seventh with matching times of 8.62 while D’Angelo ran a 8.75.
In the men’s weight throw finals, senior Jamie Van Pelt
placed fifth with a throw of 16.36m while teammate Joe Korac picked up an
eighth place finish (15.26m). Andy Benesh rounded out the top 10 as the
Catamounts’ thrower tossed a throw of 14.12m.
Tayla Carter and Raven Parrish qualified for the finals of
the 60m dash with Carter running a 7.64 (third) and Parrish a 7.75 (eighth). In
the men’s race, Ron Duncan ran the fourth fastest time (6.88) with Jerry
Wickerson (6.95) and Brandon Hairston (6.95) each qualifying as well.
Carter qualified for her second finals as the freshman ran a
24.96 to put her with the fourth fastest time in the 200-meter dash going into
Saturday.
In one of the final events of the evening, senior Josey
Weaver followed up his thrilling win in the 3000m run a week ago with a second
place finish in the 5000m. Weaver ran a 14:53.21, finishing behind USC
Upstate’s Gilbert Kemboi who ran a 14:39.31. Teammate Nolan Clark also earned a
top five finish, taking the fifth spot with his time of 15:08.11.
Saturday’s schedule begins early in the morning with the
women’s 5000-meter run kicking off the day at 8 a.m. The afternoon session
begins at noon with the men’s long jump and pole vault in the field with the
women’s distance medley relay starting the collegiate track events in the
afternoon at 4 p.m.
Burton Wins 3,000M to
Lead Furman Indoor T&F at Wake Forest Invitational
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Junior Catherine Burton won the
3,000m with time of 10:21.20 to lead the Furman indoor track and field teams
Saturday at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C. All told, the Paladin distance runners raked
in seven top-five finishes, while Furman recorded 11 top-10 individual finishes
on the day.
The Paladins placed four runners among the top six finishers
in the men’s mile, as senior Wilkerson Given placed second with a time of
4:18.13. Senior James Perez, sophomore
William Ivey, and junior Jack Klecker finished back-to-back-to-back. Perez recorded a fourth-place finish with a
time of 4:22.10, Ivey followed in fifth place (4:23.04), and Klecker in sixth
(4:23.35).
In other men’s events, sophomore Jack Morgan recorded a time
of 8:44.11 for third place in the 3,000m, while rookie Bradley Gossett rounded
out the top-10 with a time of 9:02.00.
Freshman Cole Warren notched a seventh-place finish with a time of 51.27
in the 400m dash, and senior Scott DesMarais recorded a mark of 13.65 for
seventh place in the shot put.
Furman claimed three out of the top five spots in the
women’s 3,000m, as senior Emily Wirzba placed fourth with a time of 10:24.49,
and sophomore Sinead Haughey recorded a fifth-place finish at 10:29.81.
The Paladins will compete at the Emory Crossplex
Invitational in Birmingham, Ala. on January 28.
Davidson Men Compete
at Virginia Tech, Wake Forest Invitationals
BLACKSBURG, Va./WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Senior Demetrios
Pagonis came within less than two seconds of the school record in the
5000-meter run at the Virginia Tech Invitational, while the rest of the
Davidson men’s track and field team competed at the Wake Forest Invitational
Saturday.
Pagonis placed second in 14:23.74, just shy of the school
record of 14:22.35 set by Ryan Hopkins last season. The meet was held on the
banked track at VT’s Rector Field House.
The Wildcats also saw success in the 5000m at the Wake
Forest Invitational, held on the flat track within the JDL Fast Track. Senior
Vincent Weir won the event in 14:57.70, while freshman Daniel Samet and
sophomore Chris Repecki both finished in the top five.
Sophomore Whitner Chase led Davidson in the 3000m with a
seventh-place finish in 8:54.92, while freshman Patrick Rollo paced the ‘Cats
in the mile with an eighth-place finish in 4:27.78. Sophomore Wesley Laytham
rounded out the top-10 in the event in 4:30.33.
Junior Michael Lorentsen (13-5 1?4, 4.10m) and freshman Jack
McDowell placed eighth and ninth, respectively, in the pole vault with
McDowell’s mark earning him a place on Davidson’s top-10 all-time performers
list.
Freshman Xzavier Killings led the ‘Cats in the short
sprints, finishing the 60-meter dash in 7.29 seconds and the 200m in 23.88
seconds. Classmate Charles Rappe paced the ‘Cats in the 400-meter dash in
53.88.
Davidson will return to the JDL Fast Track for the JDL
Hilton Garden Invitational Feb. 1-2.
Cougars Successful at
Wake Forest Invitational
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The College of Charleston women’s
track and field team competed in their second meet of the season Saturday at
the Wake Forest Invitational, held at the JDL Fast Track Complex, the site of
the 2013 Southern Conference Indoor Championships.
Sophomore Hayley McMahon pushed to the front of the pack and
won the 800-meter run in 2:14.89, nearly five seconds ahead of the second-place
finisher.
Sophomore Tiffany Sisk, the 2012 SoCon Outdoor shot put
champion had a good day as she finished fifth with a throw of 13.50 meters.
Freshman Rachel Leder finished 11th in the 60-meter hurdles,
just 13 hundredths of a second from making the finals of the event, with a time
of 9.20 seconds. Freshman Ciera Holston and junior Kaitlin McWhorter also
finished under 10 seconds in 21st and 23rd place respectively.
Up next the Cougars will compete in the Gene Anderson Invitational
on the campus of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Feb. 2.
Elon’s Charlise Morgan
Sets New Records at Wake Forest Invitational
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Charlise Morgan headlined a number of
great performances for the Elon track and field team today at the Wake Forest
Invitational. Morgan set new school records both the shot put and the weight
throw as the Phoenix competed in its first indoor meet of the 2013 calendar
year at the JDL Fast Track Complex.
Morgan finished third in the weight toss with a throw of
15.84-meters, breaking the old program mark she set last year of 15.58-meters.
She also established a new program toss in the shot put with a throw of
14.43-meters and finished second overall. Kimberlyn Holt also finished in the
top-five of the weight throw with a toss of 15.20-meters.
Freshman Megan Kirschling won the high jump title, tying her
own school mark with a height of 1.73-meters. Haley Laird was the runner-up
with a cleared height of 1.68-meters as Elon swept the top two spots in the
event.
Fellow freshman Sydney Griffin set a new personal-record in
the 60-meter hurdles and finished fourth overall. Griffin clocked in at 8.76,
establishing a new time for second-best on the all-time performance list.
Griffin also ran a time of 25.53 in the 200-meter dash, now fourth best on the
all-time performance list. Bria Bell was sixth overall in the 200-meters with a
time of 26.00.
Bell was the top finisher for the Phoenix in the 400-meter
run with a time of 58.90 and in seventh place. Freshman Jennifer Esposito also
competed for Elon and clocked in at 59.55 in the ninth position.
The Elon 4x400-meter relay team of Bell, Esposito, Jennifer
Pash and Veronica Luedke finished third overall with a time of 4:06.40.
In the one-mile run, Tereza Novotna ran the second-fastest
time in school history crossing the line with a time of 5:01.00 and finishing
third overall. Allyson Oram (6th,
5:13.80), Christine Pacewicz (9th, 5:17.35) and Jenny Gallagher (10th, 5:19.07)
also joined her in the top-10.
Two runners placed in the top-five of the 800-meter race
with Julie Hart crossing the line in fourth with a time 2:21.17. Seconds later,
Ellie Taff followed her with a time of 2:21.21 and in fifth place. Emily Tryon
and Haylee Dawe were in the two and three positions in the 3,000-meter run with
times of 10:21.27 and 10:22.72 respectively.
Elon will return to competition next weekend at the Penn
State National in State College, Pa., on Jan. 25.
Appalachian State Women’s
Track Dominates Mountaineer Open
BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women’s track had
a dominating Day 2 of the Mountaineer Open as they claimed 11-of-12 first place
finishes, including junior Breanna Alston breaking the 300m indoor record.
Alston had a record setting afternoon as she broke, not only
the App State indoor record, but also the App State Holmes Center record and
the Holmes Center record in the 300m dash, running a 38.50. Alston broke her
own indoor record of 39.05 that she set in 2011 at the Appalachian
Pre-Conference Meet. App State’s D’Shawrna McLucas picked up a second place
finish in the 300m dash with a 41.45 and Shenita Martin placed third with a
43.10.
Appalachian claimed the first place finish in the 55m dash
as Alston ran a 7.03, while McLucas ran a personal-best 7.33 in the finals to
clinch the second place finish.
The Apps saw a first place finish from junior Breahna
Morrison in the 400m dash as she crossed the line at a 59.70, while Shelby
Howell paced App State in the 800m run with a first place finish, running a
2:18.76. Appalachian took the third and fourth place spots in the 800m run as
Taryn Stern ran a 2:19.53 for third and Destine’ Kirkman ran a 2:22.63 for
fourth.
Senior Amanda Hamilton earned her second first place finish
of the weekend as she paced the pack in the mile at the Mountaineer Open.
Hamilton ran a 5:10.79 in the 1,500m event, while Katie Cagle ran a personal-best
5:18.87 in her first career mile, placing third overall.
For the distance runners, Kayla Schneider took home the
first place finish in the 3,000m running a 10:39.66, while the Apps claimed the
second and third place positions as well. Junior Jenna Williamson ran a
personal-best 10:51.15 and Meaghan McCauley clocked a personal-best 10:51.42,
while Dana Cox, Brittany Williams, Shelby Williams and Caitlyn Colo all placed
in the top-ten.
Appalachian A 4x300m relay team won their second straight
meet as Bryant, Alexandria Wells, Alston and Morrison crossed the line at
2:53.44 and the Appalachian B relay team came in a close second at 2:54.33.
Head coach John Weaver stated, “It was our first after
returning from the Christmas holiday. We had several performances that were
better than the December meet, many more were equal to the December meet and a
few that show we need to regain pre-holiday levels.”
In field events, the Black and Gold took home the top two
finishes in the long jump as sophomore Tatyana Bryant picked up a first place
finish with a 5.51m jump and Jamie Glenn jumped 5.18m.
Appalachian dominated both the high jump and the pole vault
as they claimed the top-three spots in both events. In the high jump, Mary
Theresa Montgomery jumped a personal-best 1.65m for the first place spot, while
Sydney Cook and Janet Watson both jumped 1.60m. Senior Cassie Crawford notched
a first place finish in the pole vault for the second meet in a row as she
jumped 3.76m, while Debra Domermuth jumped a personal-best 3.61m and Cook
earned a third place finish with a personal-best 3.46m jump.
App State took the top-two places in the shot put as Jasmine
Suydam tossed a 13.59m and freshman Brianna Tate threw for a 13.25m.
Appalachian rounded out the top five in the shot put as Ana DeLeon and Jocelyn
Parnell finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
The Apps will be back in action when they hit the road for
the first time of the season on Friday, Jan. 25 for the Kentucky Invitational.
The meet is slated to start at 7 a.m.
Chattanooga Gets
Three Top Five Finishes in DMR at Niswonger Invitational
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at
Chattanooga men’s and women’s track teams had strong showings Saturday
afternoon in the Distance Medley Relay at the Niswonger Invitational hosted by
East Tennessee State University at the ETSU/MSHA Athletic Center.
Head Coach Bill Gautier placed four teams in the race. The
men placed second and fifth while the women finished fourth and 11th.
The Chattanooga men’s A team placed second overall, just
more than two seconds behind Middle Tennessee’s top place team with a time of
10:20.78. Freshman Paul Stuart (Brentwood, Tenn.) started the event with the
1200 meter and handed off to classmate Geoff Nelson (Brentwood, Tenn.) for the
400 meter. Freshman Trevor Janssen (Jordan Station, Ontario) ran the 800m leg of
the race and handed off to senior Nathan Wanuch (Mississauga, Ontario) who ran
a 4:14 1600m leg.
The ‘B’ team led off by junior John Gilpin (Nashville,
Tenn.) finished with a time of 10:40.24. He was joined on the track by Blake
Olson (Pleasantview, Tenn.) in the 400, freshman Marquis Carter (Memphis,
Tenn.) in the 800m and Patrick O’Brien (Chattanooga, Tenn.) in the 1600m.
The women’s fourth place team of freshman Teghan Henderson
(Pickering, Ontario), junior Gabby Cader (Cleveland, Tenn.), sophomore Rebecca
Greenwall (Bogart, Ga.) and sophomore Amanda Sumner (Bristol, Conn.) ran the
DMR in a time of 12:13.96.
The women’s ‘B’ team finished 11th with a time of 12:56.98
led off by sophomore Rachel Greenwall (Bogart, Ga.). Freshman Kianna Howard
(Nashville, Tenn.) ran the 400m followed by sophomore Jessica Philpott
(Manchester, Tenn.) in the 800m and freshman Helenka Kis (Columbia, Tenn.) in
the 1600m anchor.
The men’s and women’s teams will be back in action next week
at the University of Kentucky Rod McCravy Memorial in Lexington, Ky.
Wofford Men’s and
Women’s Track and Field Place Eight in the Top-20 at Niswonger Invitational
JOHNSON CITY, TENN. –
The Wofford men’s and women’s track and field teams placed eight
athletes and had three personal best at the Niswonger Invitational Friday and
Saturday in the second indoor meet of the season.
Katie Kessler led the women’s team with a first place finish
in the 800m with at time of 2:21.71. Alyssa Burkert finished in the top ten in
two events, the 800m and the mile. She
took seventh in the 800m with a time of 2:17.13 topping her time from the
opening meet by seven seconds. She
finished in ninth in the mile with a time of 5:21.66. Sam Hughes set a new personal
best in the 3,000m with a time of 10:35.56 and a finished in ninth place. Alissa Williams finished in tenth place in
the 3,000m with a time of 10:40.08, while Carly Egan finished 12th in the
5,000m with a time of 20:22.96. Niki
Klasnic also finished in 12th with a time of 5:24.68 in the mile.
On the men’s side, Patrick Cummings finished in fifth place
with a time of 2:00.91, just over a second off the Wofford school record in the
800m. Tevin Johnson finished just
outside the top 20 in 21st place with a distance of 5.94m in the long jump.
Tyrell Jemison set a new personal best in the 60m with a time of 7.51. Hunter McGahee also set a new personal best
with a time of 4:46.92 in the mile.
Wofford returns to the track at the two-day JDL Fast Track
Meet in Winston-Salem, N.C. on February 1 and February 2.
The Citadel’s Brantley
Breaks Track Record in 200 Hurdles as Bulldogs Complete Action at Captain’s
Invitational
Newport News, Va. – Jamaal Brantley established a school and
track record in the 200 hurdles on Sunday when the junior posted a time of
25.78 at the Captain's Invitational on the campus of Christopher Newport
University.
Brantley, who broke Nat Jones' track record of 25.87 set
last January, also ran a personal best in the 60 finals when he clocked in at
6.92 to earn fourth place in the event. The Summerville native's time moved him
into second all-time in program history.
Danielle Williams, who was competing in her first collegiate
race, clocked in at 59.87 in the 400 to take fifth place. The time is good for
second place in Citadel history and is only the second sub-minute time ever
posted in the event by a Bulldog woman.
In the women's 200, Tanisha Bethel improved her place in the
school's record book, moving up four spots to third place with a time of 26.08,
while teammate Christine Hinds finished with a time of 27.29 in the same event.
Andriana Love, who established the school record in the 200
hurdles last season, improved on her time as the junior posted a mark of 30.25.
Taylor Viana took fifth in the event, clocking in at 30.52 to move into second
all-time.
In an event that has never previously been run by The
Citadel, the 200 hurdles, freshmen Jayce Almes (second place, 26.18) and Darius
Johnson (fourth place, 27.27) finished close behind Brantley to establish
themselves in the school's record book.
The women's distance relay clocked in at 12:59.06 to take
third in the event and placed seventh in school history.
In the field events, pole vaulter David Melton took second
place, clearing the bar at 14'9", while Valian Brown took third in the
triple jump with a leap of 43'7.25".
Love highlighted the women's field events with a seventh
place shot put mark of 38'8.25", while Nicole Levermann cleared the high
jump bar at 5'3".
The Bulldogs will head to Annapolis, Md., next weekend for
the Wesley A. Brown Invitational hosted by Navy.
UNCG Indoor Track And
Field Participates At Wake Forest Invitational
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The UNCG indoor track and field
program opened the 2013 indoor track and field season Saturday at the Wake
Forest Invitational at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem. The men's track and
field program finished 10th overall with a score of 23, while the women's program
placed 12th with 14 points.
Leading the way for the men's program is sophomore Paul
Katam (Eldoret, Kenya/Sacho), who posted the Spartans lone win on the day.
Katam took first place overall in the men's one mile run with a time of
4:11.90, winning by over six seconds over his nearest competitor. His 4:11.90
time is a personal-best, improving his previous time of 4:18.83 set last season
at the Dick Taylor Invite.
Junior Abraham Kemboi (Eldoret, Kenya/Kipkabus) finished
second in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:38.69, finishing less than one
second out of the top spot won by Dakota Peachee of High Point (8:37.75).
Freshman Joshua Crawford (Fayetteville, N.C./South View) posted a sixth place
finish in the race in his first indoor meet of his career with a time of
8:51.93.
Rounding out the men's top finishers was sophomore Dylan
Belles (Denver, N.C./East Lincoln) finished seventh in the 5,000-meter run,
recoding a time of 15:58.68.
Leading the way for the women's program is junior Shannon
Hall (Waldorf, Md./North Point) who posted the top women's finish with a second
place effort in the 800-meter race. Hall posted a time of 2:19.20 to finish
behind Hayley McMahon of the College of Charleston (2:14.89).
Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) turned in a fourth
place finish in the one-mile run with a time of 5:02.68 to finish behind her
sister Shaina Sumney who was running unattached and won the event in a time of
4:56.27. Freshman Katherine Link (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) finished eighth in
the one-mile distance in her first indoor track meet of her collegiate score
with a time of 6:!5.58.
The UNCG track and field programs return to action next
weekend with the team splitting between two events at the Hokie Invitational
and the UW Invitational.
Georgia Southern Wraps
Up Niswonger Invitational
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Georgia Southern Track and Field
team competed in six more events on Saturday, Jan. 19 at the East Tennessee
State Niswonger Invitational on Saturday. On the final day of the two-day
event, the Eagles finished in the top 10 of every single event but one amongst
a field of 60 teams.
Sophomore Jasmine Walker continued her strong college
career, finishing sixth in the Long Jump (5.58m). Freshman Alyssa Felton also
garnered a top 10 finish in the Long Jump, leaping 5.52m for a seventh place
finish. The rookie improved her previous best, set at the Clemson Orange and
Purple Winter Classic back in December, by more than 20 centimeters.
Three Eagles came back in action after qualifying for the
finals in their respective events yesterday. Senior Ebony Carter finished fifth
in the 60m Dash (7.72), sophomore Kimberly Thomas finished fifth in the 400m
Dash (59.14) and Jasmine Billings crossed the line second in the consolidation
finals for an overall eighth place finish in the 60m Hurdles (9.04).
A week from now, the Eagles travel to Gainesville, Fla. to
continue their indoor season at the Jimmy Carnes Invitational on Saturday, Jan.
