Campbell?s Montoya Named Wrestler of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Campbell freshman Eric Montoya has been named the Southern Conference wrestler of the week for all competition from Jan. 9-15. The selection is made by the league office.

Montoya went 3-0 in duals with a pair of SoCon wins during the week.

The 125-pounder from Albuquerque, N.M., got his week off to a hot start on Jan. 9 by pinning VMI’s Armando Herrera in 4:45 for his first SoCon win of the season. The Camels would go on to beat the Keydets for their first league victory of the season. That same day, Montoya downed NC State’s Joe DeAngelo by a 5-4 count as the tri-meet continued in Buies Creek, N.C.

Montoya wrapped up his week with an 8-5 win over SoCon leader Appalachian State’s Dominic Parisi on Tuesday, handing Parisi his first dual loss of the season.

Montoya is ranked 28th nationally in his class by WrestlingReport.com, moving up two spots from last week.

The weekly award is the first of Montoya’s career and the first for a Camel wrestler this season.

Campbell (2-6, 1-1 SoCon) returns to action Jan. 23 at The Citadel (2-3, 1-0 SoCon) for a 7 p.m. tilt in Charleston, S.C.

Also nominated: Zack Strickland (Appalachian State), Odie Delaney (The Citadel), Alex Medved (Gardner-Webb) and Ryan Goodsell (VMI).
