competes at Roger Denker Open
WARRENSBURG,
Mo. – The SIUE wrestling team competed at the Roger Denker Open at Central
Missouri on Sunday and saw several wrestlers finish the day as place-winners.
The Cougars had success in the higher weight classes as freshmen Derek
Nagel and Jake Tindle finished fourth and fifth, respectively, at 184 pounds.
Jake Residori, another freshman, placed fifth at 174 pounds. Residori
earned first-place honors at 165 pounds during SIUE's last visit to
Warrensburg, when it kicked off the season at the Central Missouri Open on Nov.
11.
Also picking up victories Sunday were Kyle Lowman (157), Deshoun White
(174), and Chris Johnson (184). The Cougars were missing several other key
wrestlers due to injury.
SIUE will return to the mat next Sunday when it welcomes Northwestern and
Northern Iowa to the Vadalabene Center for a pair of dual meets. Action is set
to begin at 12 p.m. Central.
Davidson
Wrestling Swept at Pitt Duals
PITTSBURGH
– Lock Haven
and No. 15 Pittsburgh defeated Davidson, 31-6 and 39-6, respectively, in nonconference
wrestling action Sunday at the Pitt Duals in Fitzgerald Field House.
Sophomores Anthony Elias (133 pounds) and Ian Solcz (174 pounds) earned
the lone victories for Davidson (5-5) against Lock Haven (4-2). Elias also
nearly defeated Pitt’s No. 15 Shelton Mack but was defeated in overtime, 3-1.
Elias’ 6-3 decision over Matt Bryer pulled Davidson within one after the
Bobby Rehm scored a major decision for the Bald Eagles at 125 pounds, but Lock
Haven claimed the next four bouts, including a technical fall by Dan Neff at
141 pounds, to open a 19-3 lead. Solcz defeated Tyler Wood, 3-2, at 174, but
the Bald Eagles concluded the match with a pair of decisions and pin at
heavyweight by Harry Turner.
Philip Elias won by forfeit at 125 pounds to give Davidson an early 6-0
lead against Pittsburgh, but starting with Mack’s slim victory over Anthony
Elias, Pitt’s lineup, which included five nationally ranked wrestlers, claimed
the remaining bouts. The Wildcats fought hard though, only surrendering one pin
to No. 9 Zac Thomusseit at heavyweight.
Davidson will return to action Tuesday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m. at
Gardner-Webb for its second Southern Conference match of the year.
