The
Citadel tops VMI, falls twice at Virginia Duals
HAMPTON,
Va. – The Citadel wrestling team dropped a pair of duals to No. 25 Old Dominion
and Army before earning a huge win over Southern Conference foe VMI, 38-3, on
Friday at the Virginia Duals.
The Bulldogs (2-3, 1-0 SoCon) collected individual wins at all but one
weight class against VMI en route to their 38-3 domination. Joaquin Marquez
kicked off the match with a pin in the final minute, while 14th-ranked Odie
Delaney finished the match the same way at the 2:17 mark.
Josh Tuck and Matt Frisch received four points apiece, earning major
decisions by scores of 12-2 and 13-2, respectively. The nation's eighth-ranked
wrestler at 141 pounds, Ugi Khishignyam, sat out the final match for the
Bulldogs after collecting wins in both of his earlier bouts.
The Bulldogs and Keydets will meet again in Lexington, Va., for a SoCon
dual on Feb. 15.
The Citadel opened Friday's competition with a tough 26-9 loss to
25th-ranked Old Dominion. In that match, the Bulldogs dropped two overtime
bouts at 157 and 174 pounds. Frisch (157) fell to Brennan Brumley by sudden
victory, 4-2, while Tuck (174) lost in a 5-4 tiebreaker.
The loss pitted the Bulldogs against Army in the middle of their three
matches. The Citadel jumped out to a 15-6 advantage over the Black Knights, led
by three close wins by decision and a pin at the 2:42 mark by senior Jordan
Dix.
Army bounced back with three consecutive pins in the 174-, 184- and
197-pound bouts to take the 27-16 lead. With the match out of reach, Delaney
came out in the heavyweight bout and dominated Stephen Snyder in a 20-6 major
decision.
The Citadel will head to Boone, N.C., for its first road conference match
of the season on Jan. 18 against Appalachian State. The Bulldogs and the
Mountaineers (5-2, 2-0 SoCon) tied for second place with 72.5 points apiece at
last year's conference tournament.

Davidson
wrestling falls at Franklin & Marshall, 20-16
LANCASTER,
Pa. – Davidson and Franklin & Marshall split the 10 matches, but F&M
held the edge in bonus points to earn a 20-16 victory over the Wildcats in a
nonconference wrestling dual meet Friday evening in the Mayser Center.
Davidson (5-3) trailed 20-3 after the first six bouts, but rallied in the
final four to close the gap. It was not enough, though, as junior Scott Patrick
was the only Wildcat to score bonus points, earning a major decision at 184
pounds over Paul Alessandrini, 14-4. Ian Solcz (174), Carson Stack (197), and
Ed Isola (285) all won by decision for the final margin.
Sophomore Philip Elias claimed the first bout of the meet for Davidson at
125 pounds, earning a 7-5 decision over Aaron Moldoff, but Franklin &
Marshall (4-2) won the next five. Robert Ruiz earned a major decision at 133
pounds and Richard Durso followed with a pin at 141 pounds for a 10-3 Diplomat
advantage.
Andrew Murano prevailed at 149 pounds, 9-5, while Eric Norgard claimed a
major decision with an 8-0 shutout at 157. Rob King then managed to edge Chris
Cirenza in a close battle at 165 pounds, 5-3, giving F&M just enough of a
cushion to withstand Davidson’s late charge.
Davidson will continue to compete in Pennsylvania, traveling to the
University of Pittsburgh to compete in the Pitt Duals on Sunday against Lock
Haven and No. 15 Pittsburgh.
