Campbell tops VMI at tri-meet, Campbell and VMI fall to NC State

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell split a pair of dual meets Wednesday in Gore Arena, defeating Southern Conference foe VMI 32-9 and falling to NC State 27-13. VMI also fell to NC State, 35-6.

The Camels are now 2-5 overall and 1-0 in the SoCon. VMI moved to 0-4 (0-1 SoCon) and NC State now stands at 2-0.

Campbell won eight of the 10 matches against VMI, while earning three wins over NC State.

No. 30 Eric Montoya, Paul Duggan, and John Merickel each went 2-0 on the day.

Montoya, a freshman who broke into national rankings this week, improved to 24-10 on the year at 125 pounds. He pinned VMI's Armando Herrera in 4:45 and earned a hard-fought 5-4 decision over NC State's Joe DeAngelo.

At the 165-pound spot, Duggan, a sophomore, posted two major decisions to improve to 14-10 overall. He topped VMI's Mark Darr 11-1 and NC State's Mardel Gabriel 14-4.

Merickel, a senior, tabbed a 9-5 decision over VMI's Urayoan Garcia before pinning NC State's Bill Cook in 1:04 at 197 pounds. He now stands at 9-12 on the season.

VMI’s lone wins against Campbell came at 133 pounds as Andriy Onufriyenko pinned Tanner Bidelspach in 5:18. Onufriyenko’s win by fall tied the match at 6-6 and the Keydets moved out to a 9-6 lead after Ryan Goodsell collected a win at 141. VMI could not maintain the lead as Campbell collected wins in the next seven weights.

In the Keydets’ match against NC State, VMI collected another win by fall, this time at 184 pounds. Jonathan Jones collected six team points with his second-period pin against Patrick Davis. But it was too little too late as the Keydets were down 28-0 heading into Jones’ bout.

Campbell will have six days of rest before traveling to Boone, N.C. where it will take on SoCon foe Appalachian State. VMI will have a short respite as it makes the jaunt to Hampton Roads, Va., for the 2013 Virginia Duals. Action will kick off at the Hampton Coliseum at 9 a.m. on Friday.
