SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Georgia Southern
junior goalkeeper Katie Merson has been named the Southern Conference’s women’s
soccer player of the week for all matches Aug. 27 to Sept. 2. The award is
selected by the league office.
Merson
had a pair of shutouts on the week as the Eagles went 1-0-1 to remain
undefeated on the season. Georgia Southern’s 3-0-2 start is its best since
2000, when the squad bolted out of the gate with an 11-0-0 mark.
Merson
made five stops in Friday’s 1-0 win over North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla.,
facing 11 shots and three corner kicks in the tight match.
The
Albuquerque, N.M., native notched her second clean sheet of the weekend two
days later, making another five saves in 110 minutes of action as the Eagles
played Jacksonville University to a scoreless draw. Merson was tested often,
facing 15 shots and seven corners.
The
pair of shutouts moved her total to a SoCon-best four on the season and eight
for her career, making her the Southern Conference’s active career leader in
that category. She owns a sparkling 0.18 goals against average on the year,
having allowed just one goal in five starts.
The
award is the first of Merson’s career.
Georgia
Southern hosts South Carolina State on Wednesday in Statesboro, Ga.
