WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior Natalie Braun recorded a double-double and hit .696 with 16 kills and 13 digs to push the Furman volleyball team past Wake Forest, 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-20), Tuesday in Winston-Salem, N.C. With the win, the Paladins are 2-0 versus ACC opponents this season.
Following an 11-11 tie in the opening set, the Paladins held a slight advantage at 15-14 before putting together a 10-3 run to end the set. Fueled by the service of freshman Caitly Scioscia, Furman claimed the set's last five points, including a Scioscia set-point ace that gave the Paladins the 25-17 win.
Furman led throughout set two and built a 15-10 lead, but the Demon Deacons recorded a 7-2 run of their own to tie the match at 17. The Paladins answered, winning eight of the set's final ten points, including a back-to-back kill and service ace from senior Chandler Ambrester and consecutive kills by Braun, for a 25-19 set win to take a 2-0 lead at the break.
In set three, Furman quickly took a 9-3 lead. Wake Forest cut the advantage to four points at 21-17 following a 4-0 run, but the Demon Deacons would come no closer, as the Paladins took advantage of hitting errors in the match's final points for the 25-20 victory.
Ambrester posted a .314 attack percentage with 14 kills, nine digs, and two service aces for the Paladins, while senior Caroline Adams hit .417 with five kills and two block assists. Freshman Jo Wilks recorded her fifth double-double of the season, tallying a team-high 39 assists and 11 digs, and junior Elle Ross led Furman with 13 digs in the match-up.
Andrea Beck led Wake Forest (6-8) with eleven kills, while Megan Miller paced the Demon Deacon defense with 14 digs. Danae Rosendall recorded a team-high 21 assists in the loss.
Furman (12-4, 1-1 SoCon) will take on Southern Conference foe Samford Saturday at 7 p.m. in Birmingham, Ala.
Wofford 3, North Carolina A&T 1
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Arden Anderson set the all-time block assists record as the Wofford volleyball team defeated, 3-0 ((18-25, 25-19, 25-15, 26-24) North Carolina A&T in a nonconference match Tuesday in the Moore Gymnasium.
Anderson came into the match just one shy of the all-time mark of 305 career block assists set by Currie Gossett from 1999-2002. Anderson tied the mark in the second set to give the Terriers a 22-16 lead. Her set the record early in the third set with Wofford up 4-1 and picked up her third block assists of the match with the score 17-10, Wofford. She earned her fourth of the match in the fourth set with Wofford up 13-8.
The Aggies opened set one with a 10-5 lead pushed it out to 15-7, before mounted a 5-0 run and cut the lead to 15-12 highlighted by two Wendy Burnett kills. NC A&T answered with back-to-back points to push the margin to four points, 17-13. The Terriers used an Aggie error to mount their own 3-0 run to cut the lead to one point, 17-16. NC A&T answered with a 6-1 run as they pushed the lead out to 23-17. The Aggies held on for the 25-18 set one win.
NC A&T hit at a sizzling .435 in the set, while Wofford hit a .300 mark. The Aggies also aced the Terriers six times.
The Terriers jumped out to a 6-2 lead early in the second set with a Burnett kill and Taylor Baird ace. Wofford extended the lead to 9-3 to force an Aggie time out. Coming out of the time out, NC A&T went on a 3-0 run to pull within three points, 9-6, but a Woodlee kill ended the run and gave Wofford a 10-6 lead. Wofford held the four-point lead, until the Terriers used two Aggie errors and a kill by Burnett to pull out to an 18-11 lead. NC A&T fought back as they cut the lead to and 20-16 on a Terrier ball handling error as part of a 5-2 run. The Aggies again battle back into the set, 23-19, but the Terriers held on for the 25-19 win.
This time Wofford held a .240 hitting percentage while limiting NC A&T to a .074 mark.
Wofford took the early lead in the fourth set, 4-1, as Jessica Graham had a service aces and Arden Anderson and Amanda Liguori team up for a block. The block assists was Anderson's 306th career block assists giving her the new Wofford all-time record. She tied the record in the second set. Wofford pushed the margin out to 10-4 after a Liguori kill to force an Aggie time out. The Terriers continued to open up the lead as the margin increased to nine points, 14-5, on a Burnett kill. NC A&T used a 5-1 run to pull within five points, 10-5, but Woodlee ended the run with a kill and block assists as Wofford pushed the lead back to eight points, 18-10. Wofford pulled out a 2-1 set advantage with a 25-15 set three win.
In the third set, Wofford got off to a quick start, 9-5, but NC A&T answered with back-to-back blocks to trim the lead to 9-7. Wofford held the Aggies back as the lead alternated between two and three points, until a Baird kill pushed the lead to 22-18. The Aggies answered with 3-0 run to pull within a point, 22-21, and tied the set at 23. After an Aggie kill to make it 24-23, Woodlee tied the set at 24 with a kill and gave the Terriers a 25-24 lead with another kill. Wofford claimed the set, 26-24, and the match, 3-1, on an Aggie attack error.
Wofford (9-5, 0-2) finished the match with a .281 hitting percentage while limiting NC A&T, (0-19, 0-0) a .157 hitting percentage. Wofford also held a nine to five blocking advantage.
Woodlee led all players with 18 kills, one shy of a career-high, and a .455 hitting percentage. She finished with 19.5 total points as she added three block assists. Burnett followed with ten kills and a.350 hitting percentage and five block assists. Anderson and Liguori tied with four block assists in the match. Reagan Styles collected a match-high 16 digs, and Bekah Dorsey passed out 36 assists.
Brooke Stamnes led the Aggies with 12 kills, while Aleena McDaniel followed with 11 kills. Ashley Johnson had 14 digs, while Chelsea Fox handed out 28 assists.
Wofford will travel to Chattanooga Saturday for a match at 7 p.m. as its next match.
College of Charleston 3, The Citadel 0
CHARLESTON, S.C. - College of Charleston earned its second straight sweep and third straight win as the Cougars defeated The Citadel Bulldogs, 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-18), in SoCon action Tuesday night at McAlister Fieldhouse.
The Cougars (9-5, 2-0) continue their all-time undefeated streak against The Citadel (2-14, 0-2), now reaching a record of 27-0.
College of Charleston, who did not trail until the start of the third set, hit over .300 for the third straight match as the squad notched a hitting percentage of .301 and held Citadel to .040.
Junior Kerstin Koehler and freshman Melissa Morello led the team in kills with nine, with Morello getting all of her kills in the first two sets. Koehler also made a match-high five blocks to lead the Cougars to nine team blocks, bolstered by three blocks apiece from Emily Neideffer and Sloane White.
Junior Darcy Dorton hit .438 with eight kills against one error on 16 swings, joining White who hit .500 on eight kills as well.
Taeler Davis continued to play well at setter as she tallied 37 assists and eight digs. Emily Shelton ranged the back row to notch 16 digs in the three-setter.
The Cougar bench saw valuable playing time in the third set with Kelly Kolich hitting .364 with six kills and Lizzie Theesfeld making four kills. Catey Warren made two kills for CofC.
The Bulldogs were led by Jessica Maxwell and Lauren Hurt who made eight kills and seven kills, respectively. Hurt also contributed four blocks.
CofC built a 9-1 lead in the first set to take control of the match early. However, several attack errors from the visitors allowed the Bulldogs to climb back and cut the lead to 14-11, before CofC rattled off the next five points to take a 19-11 lead and eventually secure the set, 25-14.
College of Charleston was even more workmanlike in the second set, committing just four attack errors and landing 15 kills for an attack percentage of .393. The Cougars broke open a 9-6 game by scoring seven of the next nine points to lead 16-8. The Bulldogs could not climb closer than seven points for the rest of the way and three straight attack errors from Rachael Farrell gave the Cougars a 25-14 set two win.
The Citadel won the first point of the third set and hung tight with the Cougars for the next big stretch, taking advantage of Morello and Dorton resting on the bench. CofC eventually went on a 4-0 run to make a 14-10 lead after kills from Koehler. The Bulldogs cut the lead to two at 18-16, but kills from Theesfeld and Kolich got the Cougars to 20 first and CofC eventually won, 25-18.
