GREENVILLE,
S.C. – Tyler Peoples netted two goals and Martin Ontiveros added a goal and an
assist as the 23rd-ranked Furman men’s soccer blanked the University of North
Florida, 5-0, in nonconference action on Sunday afternoon at Stone Soccer
Stadium.
The victory improved the Paladins to 7-1-1 and stretched Furman’s
unbeaten run to six matches. North Florida slipped to 3-5-0 on the season.
Ontiveros, who leads the Paladins with six goals and five assists through
nine matches, opened the scoring at the 13:21 mark on an assist from Danny
Hojaij. After receiving the ball near the left corner of the box, Ontiveros
took one touch before hammering a shot to the left of Ospreys goalkeeper Kyle
Nasta.
Just three minutes later, Peoples doubled the Furman lead with his second
goal of the weekend. Clint Ritter played a long ball over the top, and Peoples
ran onto the pass to deposit a shot into the lower left-hand corner at 16:22. In
the 22nd minute, Ontiveros played a ball to John Lung’aho on the left side and
the junior chipped a shot over Nasta toward the right post for his first tally
as a Paladin to increase the cushion to 3-0.
Furman upped the margin to 4-0 in the 64th minute when Josh Fusan served
a long ball to Alex Crooks, who slipped in behind the Ospreys’ back line. Crooks
headed the bouncing ball down to his feet and lined a shot past the goalkeeper
for his second tally of 2012.
Peoples capped the scoring with his third goal of the weekend at the
84:00 mark as Walker Zimmerman headed a Kevin Pahl corner kick to the near post
for Peoples to redirect into the open net for the final 5-0 score line.
Furman outshot the Ospreys 22-3 and did not allow a shot on goal. The
Paladins earned nine corner kicks to just three for North Florida.
Senior Doug Ryan and redshirt freshman Trent Johnson each saw 45 minutes
of action in goal for the Paladins with neither keeper being forced to make a
save. Nasta totaled five saves for the Ospreys.
Furman continues its homestand on Thursday when it hosts East Tennessee
State. Kickoff at Stone Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
