No. 19 Monmouth 1, College of Charleston 0

WEST LONG BEACH, N.J. – The College of Charleston men’s soccer team fell, 1-0, to No.19 Monmouth on The Great Lawn on Sunday afternoon.

The lone goal of the match came in the 23rd minute, when Ryan Clark played a ball into the box and Derrick Edney headed it home.

The Cougars, now 3-4-0, were outshot, 12-7, in the contest. Both teams had four corner-kick opportunities. CofC committed one more foul than the Hawks in a 15-whislted affair.

Kees Heemskerk made four saves in net for the Cougars.

The Cougars return to action on Wednesday when they host Winthrop at Patriots Point at 7 p.m.

 

Cornell 2, Wofford 1

ITHACA, N.Y. – Wofford’s men’s soccer team fell to undefeated Cornell 2-1 on Sunday afternoon to complete its New York trip with a 1-1 record. Alex Hutchins scored his sixth goal of the season, but it was not enough as the Big Red scored two second-half goals in a comeback victory.

With the game tied at 1 late, both teams would push hard for a game-winning goal, but it would be Cornell who would find the back of Wofford’s net in the 86th minute. Daniel Haber was able to score past Wofford keeper Andrew Drennan after receiving a perfect through ball from Benjamin Williams.

The Terriers (4-3) opened the scoring in the 26th minute, when Ellis Vienne and Connor Davis combined to find Hutchins, who beat Big Red goalkeeper Rick Pflasterer from the top of the penalty box.

At the break, Wofford still held a one-goal lead despite Cornell holding the edge in shots (5-3) and corners taken (4-2).

Cornell (5-0) would score to tie the game 20 minutes into the second half. After earning a free kick, Cornell sent the ball into the Terrier penalty area. Wofford was able to head the ball clear momentarily, but Patrick Slogic sent the ball back into the box for Cornell. Conor Goepel was waiting, and he was able to touch the ball into the far corner past Drennan.

Overall, Cornell outshot the Terriers (14-11) and took more corners (5-3).

Drennan took the loss for Wofford and fell to 4-3 for the season. Rick Pflasterer earned the win for Cornell and improved to 5-0 this year.

The Terriers return home to host the Spartans of USC Upstate on Wednesday. The game is set to kick off at 7 p.m. at Snyder Field.

 

Saint Mary’s 2, Appalachian State 0

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Appalachian State University men’s soccer dropped its second match of the season Sunday, falling 2-0 to Saint Mary’s on the final day of the UNCW Hilton Garden Inn Classic at the UNCW Soccer Field.

With the loss, the Apps fell to 4-2-1 on the season, as Saint Mary moved to 3-1-2.

The Gaels started quickly in the opening half, striking first in the 21st minute. SMC’s Justin Howard fired a seven-yard shot past Appalachian goalkeeper Danny Free to grab the lead. Tariq Adam and Michael Semenza were credited with assists on the goal.

After the goal, App State fired two shots on goal but could not find the back of the net and went into halftime down, 1-0. The Apps outshot the Gaels in the first half 5-2.

Saint Mary’s got an insurance goal when the Mountaineers gave up an own goal in the 81st minute. The Gaels’ defense closed out the match, not giving the Apps many opportunities after the final goal.

Free finished the match with two saves, with both stops coming in the second half. Sophomore Stanley Broaden and freshman Ewahia Amhanesi both record shots on goal.

The Mountaineers will continue their road trip as they head to Wake Forest on Tuesday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

 

No. 21 Furman vs. Florida Golf Coast, suspended

Fort Myers, Fla. – Inclement weather brought a stop to Sunday’s finale at the Courtyard by Marriott Classic with nationally ranked Furman leading host Florida Gulf Coast University 1-0 in the opening minutes of the second half. The match will not be completed and no result will be recorded.

The Paladins jumped on top in the opening five minutes when Martin Ontiveros and Danny Hojaij combined to set up Clint Ritter for the only goal of the afternoon. Furman outshot FGCU 4-0 in the first half.

After the match was stopped due to lightning in the area shortly after the restart, the officials waited 90 minutes, but persistent bad weather did not allow for the resumption of the match.

Furman, 5-1-1 on the season, will travel to face USC Upstate at 7 p.m. on Friday before returning to Stone Soccer Stadium to host the University of North Florida next Sunday at 4 p.m.
