FURMAN’S GIVEN, HAUGHEY WIN MOUTAINEER OPEN CROSS COUNTRY MEET
BOONE, N.C. -- Furman senior Wilkerson Given won the men’s race of the 2012 Mountaineer Open Cross Country Meet in Boone, N.C., on Friday, turning in a time of 15:38.17 on the 5K course, while Paladin sophomore Sinead Haughey won her second-straight meet of the season, claiming first place in the women’s 5K with a time of 18:11.54. There was no team scoring at the event.
Junior Jack Klecker placed second in the men’s race, notching a time of 16:24.87, while rookie Bradley Gossett took sixth place with a time of 16:28.01. Freshman Jack Miller completed the course in 16:36.97 for eighth place, and sophomore William Ivey finished 11th with a time of 17:25.04.
In the women’s race, sophomore Blair Burke finished second with a time of 18:48.62. Junior Kacie Shoen garnered fourth place with a time of 18:54.99, and senior Hannah Robinson rounded out the top-five at 18:57.20. Sophomore Emily Zizzi took sixth place with a time of 19:10.64, while junior Catherine Burton finished seventh with a time of 19:23.56. Senior Emily Wirzba completed the course in 19:24.38 to claim eighth place, and sophomore McKenzie Woolley posted a time of 22:02.19 for 13th-place.
Following an off weekend next weekend, Furman will compete at the Charlotte Invitational on September 28.
Women’s Cross Country Finish Strong Against Furman
BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women’s cross country team competed against SoCon foe, Furman at the Mountaineer Open this afternoon.
Freshman Samantha Campanaro came in first for the Mountaineers, finishing ninth overall with a 19:34.93, while Shelby Williams came in right behind her, finishing tenth overall with a 19:38.98.
Meaghan McCauley and Caitlyn Colo rounded out the scoring for the Apps on the afternoon.
Appalachian State will compete on Saturday, Sept. 15 when they run at the adidas/Winthrop Invitational. The meet is scheduled to start at 9 a.m.
Davidson Men 5th at Virginia Tech Invitational
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Led by senior Wes Reynolds, the Davidson men’s cross country team placed fifth in the Virginia Tech Invitational in a competitive field Friday evening at the Tech Cross Country Course.
Four ACC teams claimed the top four positions. No. 10 Florida State won by a large margin, tallying just 19 points after claiming four of the top five places individually. The Seminoles were led by Zak Seddon, who won in 25:08.53. Wake Forest was second with 72 points and host Virginia Tech was third with 75 points. Georgia Tech placed fourth with 117 points, and was followed by the‘Cats with 141 points. East Tennessee State trailed Davidson with 157 points to claim sixth in the nine-team field.
Reynolds paced the ‘Cats in the 8K race with an 11th-place finish in 25:35.83. Fellow senior Vincent Weir followed in 24th in a time of 25:45.19. Sophomore Henry Falotico (43rd place, 26:14.64) and freshmen Ryan Phillips (46th, 26:26.13) and Daniel Samet (52nd, 26:34.20) rounded out Davidson’s top-five scoring group.
Davidson next competes at the Charlotte Cross Country Invitational at McAlpine Park, Sept. 28.
