No. 21 Furman 2, Florida International 1

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Martin Ontiveros and Walker Zimmerman each tallied goals to lead the 21st-ranked Furman men’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over previously unbeaten Florida International on Friday evening at Florida Gulf Coast’s Courtyard by Marriott Classic.

The win improved the Paladins, who are 21^st in the Soccer Times Top 25, to 5-1-1 on the season, while the Golden Panthers slipped to 5-1-0.

After a pair of 30-minute lightning delays halted play with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Ontiveros put the Paladins on top with his team-leading fifth goal of the season. The Pharr, Texas, native curled a free kick into the upper left-hand corner with only six seconds remaining in the first half to break the deadlock after Furman had drawn a foul just outside the 18-yard box.

Furman doubled its lead at the 60:58 mark as redshirt freshman Eric Steber served a cross into the middle of the box, where Zimmerman, a sophomore and member of the United States U-20 National Team, headed in his fourth tally in seven matches.

FIU trimmed the margin to a single goal in the 67th minute as Quentin Albrecht finished a cross into the box to the lower left-hand corner, but Furman’s Doug Ryan answered the Golden Panthers’ late game push with a pair of saves in the final four minutes to secure the Paladin victory.

Furman was outshot 11-7, but the Paladins made the most of their chances by scoring on both of their shots on goal. FIU was issued five cautions during a match that included 24 fouls.

The Paladins will conclude play in the Courtyard by Marriott Classic on Sunday afternoon when they face host Florida Gulf Coast. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m.

 

Wofford 4, Colgate 0

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Wofford men’s soccer team defeated the Raiders of Colgate University 4-0 Friday night. Blair Gaines, Alex Hutchins, and Forrest Lasso all scored to lead the Terriers to their third straight victory.

Wofford improved to 4-2-0 and Colgate fell to 1-4-2 for the year.

Gaines opened the scoring for the Terriers in the 20th minute. Alex Hutchins found the defender on a breakaway, and Gaines was able to score past Raider keeper Grant Reed.

Wofford would double its lead just three minutes later when Hutchins beat Reed with a well-placed penalty shot. The Terriers would add a third goal in the first half when Lasso headed in a free kick by Carlos Dominguez Gonzalez.

Wofford led 3-0 at the break. The Terriers and Raiders each took six shots in the first half, but Colgate held the edge in corners taken (3-1). Colgate would make a change in goal to start the second half with Christian Quinttus replacing Reed. However, Quinttus was replaced after only three minutes by Liam Stapleton.

Hutchins would score his second goal in the 50th minute when he would combine with Nestor Jaramillo on a give-and-go inside the box. Jaramillo has now recorded a point in each of the Terriers’ last three victories, and the goal was Hutchins’ fifth of the season.

Andrew Drennan earned the shutout win for the Terriers and is now 4-2-0 on the year. He recorded three saves on nine shots faced. Reed got the loss for Colgate and is now 1-4-2 for the season. He saw 12 shots and made zero saves.

The Terriers return to action on Sunday when they face the Cornell Big Red in their second game of the Colgate University Fall Classic. The match is set to kick off at 1 p.m.

 

Appalachian State 1, Binghamton 0

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Appalachian State University’s men’s soccer team earned its fifth shutout of the season Friday as sophomore defender Patrick Harrow scored in the 24th minute to give the Mountaineers the 1-0 victory over Binghamton at UNCW Hilton Garden Inn Classic at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

With the win over the Bearcats in the first-ever meeting between the teams, the Apps improved to 4-1-1 on the season, while the Bearcats dropped to 2-4.

After a back-and-forth start in the first half, Binghamton committed a foul outside the 18-yard box. Harrow took the free kick and scored off the post, past BU’s goalkeeper Stefano Frantelizzi. For Harrow, it was his first collegiate goal of his career.

The backline continued to shine, as the Bearcats fired 13 shots for the match, including five on goal. Senior Lee Williams saved the match in the 81st minute when he cleared a shot by Binghamton’s Steven Celeste that beat senior goalkeeper Danny Free.

Free earned his third victory of the season, totaling five saves for the match. The junior has allowed just one goal and has 13 saves in five matches this season.

The Black and Gold fired 10 shots in the match, including three that troubled Frantelizzi. Harrow, along with sophomore Stanley Broaden and freshman Mason McCarter, recorded shots on goal.

The Mountaineers will be back in action on Sunday, the final day of the UNCW Hilton Garden Inn Classic, against Saint Mary’s. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m.

 

No. 21 Coastal Carolina 2, Elon 1

CONWAY, S.C. – Two first-half goals helped No. 21 Coastal Carolina hold off Elon 2-1 on Friday evening at the Coastal Carolina University Soccer Field.

It was the first meeting between the two schools since last year’s matchup in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

The Chanticleers (4-1-2) struck first in the fourth minute when Ricky Garbanzo scored on a penalty kick goal to give Coastal Carolina a 1-0 lead. Uchenna Uzo added another score in the 35th minute to give the Chanticleers a 2-0 advantage going into the half.

Elon (3-2-0) would finally get on the board in the second half after an own goal by Coastal Carolina to make it a one-goal game in the 49th minute.

The Phoenix, however, could not force the tie as last-second attempts by Nick Butterly and Daniel Lovitz were denied. Elon saw its three-match winning streak come to an end.

Coastal Carolina outshot Elon 15-7, including a 7-4 advantage on shot on goal. The Phoenix just edged the Chanticleers, 7-6, in corner kicks.

Nathan Dean played all 90 minutes between the posts and had a season-high five saves. Lovitz tallied two shots to lead the Phoenix.

Elon returns to the pitch on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Williamsburg, Va., versus William & Mary.

 

Rutgers 1, College of Charleston 0

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – The College of Charleston men’s soccer team fell 1-0 to Rutgers at Yurcak Field on Friday night. The Cougars outshot the Scarlet Knights and did well in possession but fell victim to a late Rutgers goal in the loss.

CofC outshot Rutgers in both periods and ended the game with a 15-11 shot advantage. In all three losses the Cougars have taken these season, CofC has outshot its opponent but been denied from scoring.

Rutgers’ goal came in the 81st minute when Dimitri Vassiliadis found some space down the right side of the pitch and served a ball into the box, where Kene Eze volleyed it toward the far post.

George Khoury paced the Cougars with four shots on the evening. The Cougars also put five shots on goal compared to three for the Scarlet Knights.

CofC stays in the North Atlantic area for a match against No. 19 Monmouth on Sunday afternoon. The Cougars and Hawks will kick off at 1 p.m. from West Long Branch, N.J.

 

Georgia State 3, Georgia Southern 0

ATLANTA – Georgia Southern’s men’s soccer team fell 3-0 to Georgia State on Friday afternoon at the Georgia State Sports Complex. The match opened a seven-game road swing for the Eagles, who travel to Wake Forest on Tuesday evening.

Georgia State got off to an early 2-0 lead with back-to-back goals by William Mellors-Blair. He scored in the 10th minute on the first shot of the match, chipping the ball into the net off a low cross. The Englishman scored again in the 23rd minute with a running left-footed shot from 15 yards into the upper 90.

The Panthers scored a third goal in the 31st minute from Peter Vania to go 3-0 up on the Eagles with just under an hour left to play.

Georgia Southern recorded five shots in the match with two on frame. Joe Hughes was credited with two shots, one on frame.

The Eagles fell to 2-4-0 on the season while Panthers improved to 3-2-0.

The Eagles continue their seven-game road swing next week with trips to Wake Forest on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. and Jacksonville on Saturday at 7 p.m.
