Furman Volleyball Blanks Presbyterian

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Senior Chandler Ambrester hit .552 with 18 kills to help the Furman volleyball team extend its home winning streak to 18 matches with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-11) win over Presbyterian Wednesday in Alley Gymnasium.

The teams were tied at nine apiece after battling through a close opening set when the Paladins put together a 5-3 run to lead 15-12.  The Blue Hose answered with consecutive points to cut the lead to one point before Furman connected on four-straight points to push its advantage to 19-15, gaining momentum en route to a 25-20 set win.

Following a 3-3 opening to set two, the Paladins capitalized off consecutive kills from seniors Natalie Braun, Ambrester, and Caroline Adams for a 6-3 lead.  Presbyterian remained within two at 8-6, but Furman put together a 6-0 run sparked by strong serves from freshman Payton Frappier for a 14-6 advantage.  The Blue Hose stayed in the match, down 19-16, before the Paladins won four out of the next five points to put the match out of reach, taking a 25-18 victory for a 2-0 set lead at the break.

After five ties at the beginning of set three, Furman won four consecutive points to lead 9-5.  The teams traded points then with the Paladins leading 10-7 and Braun at the service line, Furman reeled off seven-straight points to take firm control of the match and roll to a 25-11 win.

Braun recorded her eighth double-double of the season, posting 11 kills and 12 digs for the evening.  Junior Christina Dorismond hit .522 with 13 kills and six blocks, while fellow junior Elle Ross posted a team-high 16 digs.  Freshman Jo Wilks led the team with 43 assists.

Rachel Hall led Presbyterian (2-10) with nine kills, while Mary Trimpe paced the Blue Hose defense with 17 digs.  Ashtin Frank notched a team-high 25 assists.

Furman (10-3) has the weekend off before opening Southern Conference play on Sept. 21, when the Paladins face Davidson at 8 p.m. in Alley Gymnasium.
