Wofford fourth at own Terrier Intercollegiate, Covar second individually

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women’s golf team fired a tournament-low 293 over the final 18 holes of play at the Terrier Intercollegiate on Tuesday to climb the leader board and earn a top-five finish, fourth place, at the par-72, 5,7972-yard Country Club of Spartanburg.

Wofford finished with a team score of 602. After shooting a 311 on the opening day, the Terriers responded with their 293, an 18-hole tournament record and a final-round tournament record. Wofford’s 293 also tied the second-lowest round in program history.

UNC Pembroke took the top spot with a 301-294=595, while Gardner-Webb took second with a 294-303=597. UNCW finished third after rounds of 296-306=602, followed by Wofford in fourth and Mercer (304-301=605) in fifth.

Anne Marie Covar carded a 71 in the final round to go along with her first-round 73 as she led the Terriers and finished in a tie for second place. Meagan Higgins finished in a tie for eighth place with two rounds of 74 for a 148, while Emiley Pagrabs finished in a tie for 27th after an 82-74=156. Lauren Dunbar and Alex Hendricks finished in a tie for 40th with rounds of 85-74=159 and 82-77=159, respectively.

Competing as an individual, Shelby Winters finished in a tie for 32nd with an 84-73=157.

Gardner-Webb’s Mary Katherine Donovan took the top individual spot with a 68-75=143.

Wofford will return to the course at the Highlander Invitational in Draper, Va., on Sept. 23-24.

 

Elon finishes sixth at Terrier Intercollegiate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Martyna Mierzwa shot a final-round 73 on her way to a tie for eighth individually in the season-opening Terrier Intercollegiate on Tuesday. Mierzwa's performance helped the Phoenix to a sixth-place team showing at the event with a mark of 614 (308-306).

Mierzwa's 148 (75-73) was five strokes off the winning mark and tournament 36-hole record of 143 (68-75) recorded by Gardner-Webb's Mary Katherine Donovan. Mierzwa recorded pars on 24 of her 36 holes in the tournament.

Katie Partridge led a trio of Phoenix golfers who finished in the top 30 of the 73-golfer field. Partridge carded a 154 (77-77) to tie for 21st, while freshmen Sunna Vidisdottir and Emily Brooks both shot 156 (78-78 each) to tie for 27th. Brooks recorded six birdies during the event.

A third freshman, Kathryn Buckingham, debuted with a tournament mark of 160 (79-81) to place in a tie for 46th.

Competing as an individual, Elon's Kristi Ingram placed 68th with a score of 171 (85-86).

UNC Pembroke rallied with a second-round 294 to take the team title with a mark of 595 (301-294). UNCP edged out Gardner-Webb (294-303=597) by two strokes. The rest of the top five included UNCW (296-306=602), host Wofford (311-293=604) and Mercer (304-301=605).

The Phoenix bested Samford (309-307=616), High Point (309-309=618), Appalachian State (313-303=619), USC Upstate (313-317=630), Presbyterian (321-318=639), The Citadel (329-322=651) and South Carolina State (332-325=657).

The Elon women will be back on the links next Monday and Tuesday at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate in Waynesville, N.C.

 

Samford seventh at Terrier Intercollegiate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Samford women’s golf team improved by two strokes Tuesday in its final round of competition at the 2012 Terrier Intercollegiate as the Bulldogs earned a seventh-place finish in the 13-team tournament hosted by Wofford at the par-72, 5,972-yard Country Club of Spartanburg.

Samford concluded Tuesday’s final round of competition with a score of 307, two strokes better than Monday’s first-round tally of 309. The Bulldogs’ final team total of 616 was good enough for a seventh-place finish in the season-opening competition and was just two strokes behind Elon for the sixth-place position.

UNC Pembroke rallied with a score of 294 in the final round to claim the top spot on the leader board with an 18-hole score of 595.

After shooting an opening-round 301, UNC Pembroke's mark of 294 on the final day was just enough to hold off Gardner-Webb (597) by two strokes. UNCW took third place with a 602, as host Wofford shot an 18-hole team record low of 293 in the final round to jump from eighth to fourth. Mercer rounded out the top five with a total team score of 605.

Individually, Samford was paced throughout the tournament by sophomore Emily Stallings. Stallings, the Bulldogs’ highly touted native of Fayetteville, Ga., finished with a 36-hole score of 150 (73-77) and placed 15th in the individual standings.

Samford’s Alex Jasper also registered a top-20 performance Tuesday as she carded a second-round score of 75 to place 17th in the final rankings. The Bulldogs’ junior native of Clarksville, Tenn., finished the tournament with a total of 151 after posting a first-round score of 75 on Monday.

Rounding out Samford’s individual scoring were Natalie Mitchell (81-77=158), Bailey Gray (80-78=158) and Kayla Turner (80-81=161).

Gardner-Webb's Mary Katherine Donovan took the top individual spot with a 36-hole score of 143 after back-to-back rounds of 68 and 75, respectively. She won individual medalist honors after holding off late charges from Wofford's Anne Marie Covar (73-71=144) and Mercer's Mary Alice Murphy (74-70=144). Donovan's 143 proved to be a new tournament 36-hole record.

The Samford University women’s golf team will next be in action Monday and Tuesday as the Bulldogs begin play in the 2012 Great Smokies Intercollegiate being hosted by Western Carolina University at the Waynesville Inn Golf Resort in Waynesville, N.C.

 

Appalachian State finishes ninth at Terrier Intercollegiate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Appalachian State’s women’s golf carved seven strokes off its opening-round score to place ninth at the Terrier Intercollegiate in the first competition of the fall season. The Mountaineers fired a 313-306=619 (+43) against tough competition at the Country Club of Spartanburg.

Senior Yue Xu led the way for the Apps with a 75-73=148 (+4), good for a tie for eighth place. She was followed closely by classmate Rumbidzai Masamvu in 21st place at 76-78=154 (+10).

Two more seniors fared well at the event, as Lauren Smith tied for 36th place at 83-75=158 (+14) and Mimi Burke finished one stroke behind in 40th place at 79-80=159 (+15).

Sophomore Elena Thomas improved on Tuesday to finish in 65th place at 84-83=167 (+23).

UNC Pembroke jumped from third place to claim the team title with a 301-294=595 (+19), two strokes ahead of round-one leader Gardner-Webb.

GWU’s Mary Katherine Donovan held on to win the individual medal at 68-75=143 (-1), one stroke up on Wofford’s Anne Marie Covar and Mercer’s Mary Alice Murphy.

Four other Southern Conference schools took part in the 36-hole tournament, including host Wofford, which claimed fourth place at 604 (+28), sixth-place Elon at 614 (+38), seventh-place Samford with a 616 (+40) and The Citadel, which carded a 651 (+75) to take home 12th place.

Head coach Heather Brown’s squad returns to the course next week for the Great Smokies Intercollegiate in Waynesville, N.C. The event runs Monday and Tuesday.

 

The Citadel wraps up Terrier Intercollegiate in 12th

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Citadel golf team fired a two-day 651 to place 12th at the Terrier Intercollegiate held at the Country Club of Spartanburg. Junior Erica Pellegrini led the way for the Bulldogs, firing a 159 (+15) to place in a six-way tie for 40th among individuals.

Pellegrini fired a 77 on Monday, the best two-day score by any Citadel player, following an opening-round 82.

The Cadets also got a solid showing from the freshmen tandem of Eraina Manor (161, +17) and Hollie Salvo (162, +18). Manor began her collegiate career with a team-low 80 in the opening round and followed that performance with an 81 on Monday afternoon.

Completing the scorecard for the ‘Dogs was Kellie Anderson (172, +28) and TaKima Butler (178, +34).

UNC Pembroke rallied with a second-round 294 to capture first place in the team category. The Braves, who shot 595 over the course of the tournament, were followed closely by Gardner-Webb (597) and UNCW (602).

Top individual honors went to Gardner-Webb's Mary Katherine Donovan, who finished with a -1 (143). She edged out stiff competition from Wofford's Anne Marie Covar and Mercer's Mary Alice Murphy, who finished tied at even par with a 144.

The Citadel returns to action Monday, when the team heads to the great Smokies Intercollegiate in Waynesville, N.C.

 

Western Carolina finishes eighth at Golfweek Program Challenge

PAWLEY’S ISLAND, S.C. – Playing in her first-ever collegiate tournament, true freshman Mariah Hopkins led Western Carolina to an eighth-place finish at the season-opening Golfweek Program Challenge held at the par-71, 6,200-yard Caledonia Golf & Fish Club. The Greensboro, N.C., native finished the 54-hole event in a tie for 24th place overall with a score of 232.

Combined with the men’s score from the True Blue Plantation Course, Western Carolina finished seventh out of 12 teams in the combined program challenge.

Hopkins slipped from a tie for 15th after Monday’s second round into the three-way tie for 24th with a score of 232. Her final round started with consecutive double-bogeys and a bogey through her first four holes, making the turn at five-over. She finished with two bogeys, one double and a birdie on the back nine to shoot eight-over 79 for the day.

Sophomore Sofie Kvarnstrom and freshman Taylor Allison were two of the three players involved in a tie for 30th place in the final finishing order. Kvarnstrom posted her best round of the tournament at seven-over 78 on Tuesday while Allison shot 80, both finishing at 237. Kvarnstrom played the first seven holes of her round at even par with a pair of bogeys against two birdies. The second-year Swedish player finished with three bogeys and a double-bogey on the par-4 14th on the back nine. Allison struggled on four of the final five holes, shooting bogey before birdying her final hole of the tournament.

Sophomore Maria Kjelldorff, who led the Catamounts after both the first and second rounds of the event, slipped into a tie for 33rd overall, carding her worst round of the event – 85 – on Tuesday. Kjelldorff had seven bogeys and three holes of double-bogey or higher over the final 18, finishing at 238.

Rounding out the Catamount side was senior Michelle Bello, who paced the squad on the final day of competition. The Dixon, Calif., native shot six-over 77 to rally to a three-way tie for 39th overall at 239. Bello finished the tournament with six bogeys, one double-bogey and two pars over the final 18 holes.

Campbell cruised to the women’s tournament championship, finishing all three rounds below 300 to shoot eight-over par 860 for the tournament. The Camels won the team title going away, 40 strokes better than second-place Central Arkansas, which posted the only other rounds under the 300 benchmark, finishing at 900. James Madison turned in a team 906 to finish third, followed by Boston College (914) and Troy (919) to round out the top five teams.

Brooke Bellomy of Campbell, who was third through 36 holes, matched her opening-round three-under 68 on Tuesday afternoon to claim individual medalist honors. Bellomy finished with a three-round score of two-under 211.

Campbell defended its Golfweek Program Challenge championship, edging Central Arkansas by 24 strokes.

 

College of Charleston finishes 19th at Cougar Classic

HANAHAN, S.C. – The College of Charleston women’s golf team hosted a successful event as 10 of the top 15 teams from the 2012 NCAA Championship competed in the 10th annual Cougar Classic, and the Cougars finished 19th in what will be one of the most competitive tournaments of the collegiate golf season.

The Cougars, led by senior Vanessa Koechli, shot 42 over for the tournament and finished ahead of Miami, Maryland, UNCG, Furman and Charleston Southern.

Florida won the team title with a six-shot victory over runner-up Duke. The Gators shot the third-best score in tournament history with a 12-under 852 and Gator golfer Camilla Hedberg took individual medalist honors with a 13-under 203, which tied the lowest individual round of the tournament in its 10-year history.

Southern Cal (-1), Vanderbilt (E) and Georgia (+3) rounded out the top five in the team race.

Koechli shot a career-best 69 in the second round and followed that up with a 5-over 77 and finished tied for 48th in the tournament with a 6-over 222.

Up next, the Cougars travel to State College, Pa., Sept. 28-30 for the Nittany Lion Invitational.

 

 

 

UNCG finishes 22nd at Cougar Classic

HANAHAN, S.C. – The UNCG women’s golf team concluded play at the Cougar Classic on Tuesday, posting a team score of 913 (300-301-312) in the three-day event at Yeamans Hall Club to finish 22nd in a field that included 15 of the top 20 ranked teams in NCAA Division I.

The Spartans’ 913 score surpassed last year’s total at the Cougar Classic as it posted a 915 (305-312-298).

Florida won the event, shooting a three-day total of 12-under par 852 (286-279-287) to post a six-shot victory. Duke finished second with an 858 (286-291-281) while Southern California rounded out the top three with an 863 score (285-283-295). Florida’s Camilla Hedberg won the individual title with a 13-under par 203 as she shot a 69, 66 and 68 on the three days.

Sophomore Fanny Cnops finished the tournament tied for 25th overall with a 2-over 218 (72-73-73) over the three rounds. Cnops posted the Spartans’ top score Tuesday, firing a 1-over par 73 rallying from a rough early start that saw her drop four shots in the first six holes. She posted three birdies in her final eight holes to pull back to a 1-over par round.

Sophomore Berglind Bjornsdottir finished the event tied for 59th place with a 224 (74-72-78).

Freshman Samantha Buchanan posted a 236 (79-78-79) to finish 109th while senior Courtney Taylor finished with a 237 (78-79-80) and Lily Crane rounded out the UNCG scores with a 241 (81-78-84).

UNCG returns to the course Monday and Tuesday as it takes part in the Cardinal Cup in Louisville, Ky.

 

Furman 23rd at Cougar Classic

HANAHAN, S.C. – Junior Aubrie Street (+17) posted a team-best 76 on Tuesday to lead Furman (+53) to a 23rd-place finish at the season-opening Cougar Classic at the par-72 Yeamans Hall Golf Club.

Street, a native of Medford, Ore., tallied a pair of birdies during the final round to register her best round of the week. She birdied the par-three No. 13 on her way to a one-over back nine.

Senior Laura Wearn, in fifth place entering Tuesday’s round, settled for a share of 30th at three-over after a final round 79. The Charlotte, N.C., product bogeyed the course’s first three holes before suffering back-to-back double bogeys.

The University of Florida (-12) cruised to a six-stroke victory over second-place Duke (-6) with Southern Cal (-1), Vanderbilt (E) and Georgia (+3) finishing out the top five in a field of 24 teams. Florida’s Camilla Hedberg captured individual medalist honors with rounds of 69-66-68 to finish at 13 under par. Duke’s Lindy Duncan (-9) placed second.

The Paladins return to the course Sept. 24-26, when they take part in Golfweek’s Conference Challenge in Wolcott, Colo.
