Elon fifth at Terrier
Intercollegiate
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The
Elon women's golf team opened its 2012-13 season with the first of two rounds
at the Terrier Intercollegiate on Monday. The Phoenix women, with three
freshmen in the lineup, finished their opening round with a 308 to sit in fifth
place in the 13-team field.
Leading the way for the Maroon and Gold was Martyna Mierzwa,
who fired a first-round 75 to share 13th place individually.
Just two strokes back in a tie for 21st in the 73-player
field sits Katie Partridge, who shot a 77 over her first 18 holes of the year. In
a tie for 28th are both Sunna Vidisdottir and Emily Brooks, who each carded 78s
in their first collegiate action.
Rounding out the Elon contingent was the third freshman,
Kathryn Buckingham, who shot a 79 to sit in a tie for 31st after a round.
Gardner-Webb sits atop the team leaderboard after shooting a
294 on day one. The Runnin' Bulldogs lead UNCW by two strokes. UNC Pembroke
(301) and Mercer (304) also sit between the Phoenix and the top team position.
The Maroon and Gold leads both Samford and High Point by a
stroke entering Tuesday's final round of play. The rest of the field includes
host Wofford (311), Appalachian State (313), USC Upstate (313), Presbyterian
(321), The Citadel (329) and South Carolina State (332).
Gardner-Webb's Mary K Donovan fired a 68 in the opening
round to set a new tournament 18-hole record and hold the top individual spot
with a round to play.
The final round of play will get under way at 9:30 a.m. at
the Country Club of Spartanburg.
Samford in sixth
after first day of Terrier Intercollegiate
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The
Samford women’s golf team carded an 18-hole score of 309 on Monday to finish
the opening day of play at the 2012 Terrier Intercollegiate tied for sixth
place in the highly competitive tournament being hosted by Wofford University
at the par-72, 5,972-yard Country Club of Spartanburg.
The Bulldogs finished tied for sixth place with High Point
University. Gardner-Webb leads the tournament after the opening round of action
at the Terrier Intercollegiate with a score of 294, while UNCW (296), UNC Pembroke
(301), Mercer (304) and Elon (308) round out the top five.
Gardner-Webb's Mary K. Donovan fired an opening-round score
of 4-under-par 68 on Monday to set a tournament 18-hole record. Gardner-Webb’s
team score of 294 also set a record for lowest team score after the opening
18-holes of play.
UNCW's Lori Beth Adams sits in second place with a 70, while
Gardner-Webb's Meghan Alum and USC Upstate's Taylor Barnes are tied for third place
with identical scorecards of 72.
Samford was led Monday by sophomore Emily Stallings, who
fired an opening-round score of 1-over-par 73. The Bulldogs’ highly touted
native of Fayetteville, Ga., completed the first day of play tied for sixth
place in the individual standings.
Junior Alex Jasper carded a 76 at the Wofford Country Club
and moved into a tie for 17th place, while her Samford teammates Bailey Gray
and Kayla Turner both registered identical scores of 80. The Bulldogs’ Natalie
Mitchell rounded out the team’s scoring with a first-round total of 81.
The 2012 Terrier Intercollegiate will resume with the final
18 holes of play Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
Wofford eighth after
first round of Terrier Intercollegiate
SPARTANBURG, S.C. –
After the opening 18 holes, the Wofford women’s golf team is in eighth place at
the Terrier Intercollegiate held at the par-72, 5,972 yard Country Club of
Spartanburg.
Wofford shot a team score of 311 as it is 17 strokes off
tournament leader Gardner-Webb, who fired a tournament-record 294.
Anne Marie Covar is the low Terrier after carding a 73 in
the first round, good enough for a tie for sixth. Megan Higgins followed with a
74 and is in a tie for ninth place, while Alex Hendricks and Emiley Pagrabs
both carded 82s. Lauren Dunbar finished with an 85.
Competing as individuals for the Terriers, Elizabeth
Thompson shot an 81, while Shelby Winters posted an 84. Tarah Taylor finished
with an 88.
Gardner-Webb’s Mary K. Donovan leads the tournament with a
record-low 68.
The tournament will wrap up with the final 18 holes Tuesday
morning starting at 9:30 a.m.
Appalachian State in
ninth at Terrier Intercollegiate
SPARTANBURG, S.C. –
After one round of competition, Appalachian State University’s women's golf team
is ninth at Wofford's Terrier Intercollegiate. The Mountaineers carded a 313
(+25) in the fall season's opening 18 holes on Monday at the Country Club of
Spartanburg.
Senior Yue Xu leads App State with a 75 (+3) to rank 13th in
the field of 73 players. Classmate Rumbidzai Masamvu is just behind in a tie
for 17th with a 76 (+4) on the opening day.
Mimi Burke carded a 79 (+7) to stand in 31st place, while a
fourth senior, Lauren Smith, is 55th with an 83 (+11).
Sophomore Elena Thomas rounded out the day-one scoring with
an 84 (+12) to place 59th.
Gardner-Webb leads the 13-team field with a 294 (+6), two
strokes ahead of UNCW.
GWU's Mary K. Donovan leads all players with a 68 (-4), two
strokes up on UNCW's Lori Beth Adams.
Competing from the Southern Conference, Elon is fifth at 308
(+20), one stroke ahead of sixth-place Samford. Host Wofford is eighth at 311
(+23) and The Citadel stands 12th at 329 (+41).
The tournament will resume with the final 18 holes Tuesday with
a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.
Furman’s Wearn up to
fifth at Cougar Classic
HANAHAN, S.C. – Furman
senior Laura Wearn fired a three-under 69 on Monday to move into a tie for
fifth place through two rounds at the season-opening Cougar Classic at the
par-72 Yeamans Hall Golf Club.
The Paladins (307-300=607), who suffered a setback Sunday
evening when freshman Valentina Romero’s first round score was disallowed after
the Colombia native accidentally signed for an incorrect score, bounced back
with a 12-over 300 on Tuesday to hold 23rd place.
Wearn (-4), a Charlotte, N.C., native, recorded five second-round
birdies and played Yeamans Hall’s 10 par-four holes at four-under par to climb
into a share of fifth place with 18 holes to play in the 54-hole tournament. She
birdied three of the first six holes on the back nine to shoot two-under over
the final nine holes.
Freshman Stephanie Carlozzi (+11) recovered from
back-to-back double bogeys at No. 13 and 14 to post her first career eagle at
No. 15 en route to a four-over 76. Romero played the back nine at one-over to
shoot a second-round 77.
The University of Florida (-11) shot a tournament-best 279
to open up a three-stroke advantage over second-place Southern Cal (-8) through
36 holes. Vanderbilt (-2), Virginia (E) and Auburn (E) rounded out the top five
in the 24-team field.
Camilla Hedberg (-9) of Florida followed a first-round 69
with a 66 on Monday to lead teammate Isabelle Lendl (-7) by two strokes.
Final-round action is set for Tuesday morning.
College of Charleston
up two spots at Cougar Classic
HANAHAN, S.C. – The
College of Charleston women's golf team made seven birdies on the back nine
holes as it climbed up the leaderboard into 16th place at the Cougar Classic at
Yeamans Hall on Monday.
Senior Vanessa Koechli shot a career round as she carded a
3-under 69 with four birdies to lead the Cougars, who shot an 8-over 296 for
the day. The Cougars are one shot back of LSU and 12 shots out of the top 10.
The Florida Gators hold the team lead as they fired a
9-under 279 and are 11-under for the tournament. Southern Cal is three shots
back at 8-under. Vanderbilt holds the third position at 2-under.
Freshman Julie Neumann carded a 2-over 74 for the Cougars as
she made two birdies for her round.
The teams will play the final round in a shotgun start at 9
a.m. There will be an opening ceremony with a bagpiper walking up the first
fairway at 8:30 a.m.
UNCG 19th
after two rounds at Cougar Classic
HANAHAN, S.C. –
The UNCG women’s golf team continued its solid showing at the 2012 Cougar
Classic on Monday, posting a 301 team score on day two of the prestigious
three-day event at Yeamans Hall Club to sit in a tie for 19th place overall.
The Spartans’ 601 two-day score (300-301) is 16 shots better
than last year’s two-day total at the Cougar Classic, as it posted a 617
(305-312). The final 18 holes will begin Tuesday with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
Florida leads the stellar field that includes 15 of the top
25 teams in the nation, posting a 279 Monday to move to 11-under par as a team
with a score of 565 (286-279). Southern California is second with a 568
(285-283), Vanderbilt is third with a 574 (289-285) and Virginia and Auburn are
tied for fourth with scores of 576.
Sophomore Berglind Bjornsdottir posted a team-best even
par-72 Monday morning to stay at 2-over 146, sitting in a tie for 35th place
overall. Bjornsdottir recorded two birdies over her final four holes to secure
the even-par effort for the day.
UNCG sophomore golfer Fanny Cnops fired a 1-over par 73 Monday
after posting an even par-72 in the opening round. Cnops enters the final round
in a tie for 28th place to lead the Spartans in the event.
Senior Courtney Taylor is tied for 93rd with a 154 (75-79).
Freshmen Samantha Buchanan is tied for 114th place with a 157 (79-78), while
classmate Lily Crane is tied for 123rd overall with a 159 (81-78).
The final round of the event will be played Tuesday with a
shotgun start.
Western Carolina
sixth at Golfweek Program Challenge
PAWLEY’S ISLAND, S.C.
– Sophomore Maria Kjelldorff and freshman Mariah Hopkins are tied for 15th
after 36 holes to lead Western Carolina at the season-opening Golfweek Program
Challenge being contested at the par-71, 6,200-yard Caledonia Golf & Fish
Club. The Catamounts have a two-day total of 622 to stand sixth out of the 12
teams in the field entering Tuesday's final round.
Hopkins, a rookie from Greensboro, N.C., carded her lowest
round for the Purple & Gold in her young career by shooting five-over 76
Monday to move from 24th into a two-way tie for 15th with Kjelldorff. Hopkins
overcame a bogey, double bogey and triple bogey in her round with a birdie on
the par-5 eighth to finish five-over on the round, 11-over for the tournament.
Kjelldorff had an active scorecard on the back nine after
starting on the 10th hole. Three straight bogeys on the 12th through 14th holes
were countered with back-to-back birdies to drop to one-over through seven
holes. However, consecutive double bogeys left her making the turn at five-over
par. She finished with two bogeys and a birdie over her final nine holes to
shoot six-over 77.
Freshman Taylor Allison trimmed five strokes off her first
collegiate round of 81 on Sunday to shoot 76 in the second round, advancing
eight spots in the standings to enter Tuesday's final round tied for 30th at
157. Allison worked around a quadruple bogey on the par-4 16th, countering
three bogeys with a pair of birdies - the first of her college career.
Rounding out WCU's scoring side are sophomore Sofie
Kvarnstrom in a tie for 35th after shooting 79 on Monday and senior Michelle
Bello in a tie for 46th, matching Kvarnstrom with a 79 on the second 18 holes
of the event.
The only squad to break the 300 team scoring barrier on the
opening 18 holes, first-round leading Campbell continues to pace the 12-team
field, entering the final round with a 28-stroke lead over second-place Central
Arkansas. The Camels - which have all five golfers inside the top 10 and four
of the top five individuals - carded rounds of 286 and 288 for a combined 574
while Central Arkansas became just the second squad in the field to crack 300,
shooting 298 on Monday for a two-day total of 602.
James Madison and Boston College are tied for third with
identical scores of 605 while Troy (609) rounds out the top five teams.
Sofia Bjorkman of Troy and Julia Roth of Central Arkansas
share the medalist honors entering Tuesday's final round with matching scores
of even-par 142.
The overall program challenge winner will be decided by
combining the men's and women's scores with the lowest total claiming the event
title. Defending event champion Campbell enters the final round with a
commanding 34-stroke advantage over runner-up Central Arkansas. WCU is
currently in sixth place in the 12-school field.
The final round of the Golfweek Program Challenge gets
underway at 7:30 a.m. with tee times on both the front and back nine. WCU will
be paired with golfers from Boston College and Troy, hitting the course in the
first group off the front.
